Rekkerd.org music contest: “Moving”

moving, image by yehwan @ Flickr

As I am preparing to relocate my family to a new house this March, the subject of “moving” has been on my mind a lot lately.

Moving is about putting things in motion. Besides the obvious physical aspect, there can be quite an emotional side to moving as well. Seemed like a suitable theme for a music production contest.

Most of you would probably join the contest for the fun of it, but it doesn’t hurt to have some nice prizes, right? I am pleased to say there are lots of goodies to be won this time around.

The following list is in no particular order (as winners each get to pick their choice from the prize pot, per the contest rules below).

Contest sponsors

Contest prizes

  • Three downloads of your choice from Wave Alchemy, the sound design outfit responsible for some of the best electronic drum sample libraries around.
  • DUNE, Synapse Audio‘s new flagship “differential unison engine” synthesizer instrument for Windows and Mac. A copy of the slightly older yet still venerable and duly popular Hydra multi-model synth is also on offer.
  • $500 USD store credit at Soniccouture, the established company behind many unusual & unique sample libraries such as Glass Works, The Skiddaw Stones, Balinese Gamelan, (Xtended) Piano, and the upcoming Ondes Martenot.
  • Berlin-based Cableguys contributes a total of 4 prizes from its exciting line of audio plug-ins. Single licenses for Curve, FilterShaper 2 & VolumeShaper 2, plus the complete Cableguys Bundle.
  • A two year all-inclusive subscription account at DNR Collaborative, which gives access to the entire product catalog + 2 years worth of new products. On top of that three randomly picked contestants will receive a Transitions Bundle.

Yes, that’s no less than 12 prizes to be won!

Although this is not a sample remix contest I still made sample pack for those who enjoy working with loops. The download includes 24 .wav samples (24bit), both melodic and beats. You can preview & download individual files from the SoundCloud player below, or download the complete pack here (47.9MB RAR archive).

Please make sure to read the contest rules below carefully. Good luck, and have fun!

The contest deadline is set to April 3rd.

Contest rules

  • Compose a song with the following theme: “Moving”.
There are no specific rules on how to incorporate the theme, be creative.
  • Your entry must be written specifically for this contest.
  • A free sample pack is available to download for those who enjoy working with samples. Use of these samples is not required. You may process/manipulate the sample(s) in any way you like.
  • Upload your entry to SoundCloud and share it to the contest group before April 3, 2011, 11.59pm CET. One entry per contestant allowed.
  • Confirm your entry by email (no longer accepting entries)
  • In order to be eligible to win, contestants are required to vote for their top 5 within a week after the contest deadline. Contestants will be contacted to submit their votes. Note: you cannot vote for your own entry.
  • Winners choose a prize from the prize pool in order of placement (1st place winner picks first, then 2nd, etc.). All prizes are granted at the discretion of rekkerd.org. Some prizes may be subject to specific conditions imposed by the sponsor (e.g. NFR licenses).

Rekkerd.org Music Contest, Autumn 2010 Edition

Autumn leaves

I don’t know which part of the world you are in, but here in the Netherlands the transition from summer to winter is clearly visible. Leaves are turning color, the days get shorter, and it is definitely getting colder. What better way to stay warm than by spending some quality time making music in your cosy studio?

Those who have been part of rekkerd.org contests before may have noticed the title of this post says “Music Contest” instead of the usual “Sample Remix Contest”. Although I have provided another contest sample pack, this time around it is not a requirement to use the samples.

However, there is a new rule. For this music contest you need to compose a song that relates to autumn. It doesn’t matter how you incorporate the theme, so be creative.

Now if all this isn’t enough fun already, we also have some wonderful prizes for this contest.

So are you ready to get started? Make sure to read the rules below carefully so you know what to expect.

NSA Custom Series Drumkit, free acoustic drumkit samples by Dean aka ‘Nekro’

Dean (aka ‘Nekro’) wrote in to share a nice collection of acoustic drum samples, recorded a few years ago when Dean was working with Pro Tools HD, using Drumagog & Sound Replacer.

Dean writes:

The people whom I have shared them with seem to find them good/usuable and I still use them myself layered with Toontrack’s rompler’s for as ‘real’ a drum sound as possible.

NSA Custom Series Drumkit
NSA Custom Series Drumkit

The sample pack includes a total of 777 samples, 16bit/44kHz mono .wav format (132 MB).

There are separate folders for cymbals, hihat, kick, snare, and tom sounds. Most file names include info on the recorded channel — L/R/M(ono), and if you take a close look you should be able to figure out how to use the multi-samples to create sampler patches (none are provided in the download pack, if anyone makes some please share).

Here’s a tune in which Dean is using the samples offered here in combination with Toontrack’s Superior Drummer 2 and EZdrummer, followed by some preview clips for all of the samples included in the pack.

The pack is available as a free download below (Zip archive, 53.9MB)

Many thanks to Dean for sharing these great samples.

rekkerd analog kick pack

The Rekkerd Analog Kick Pack is a free sample pack featuring the sounds of a small analog drum synthesizer, the Jomox MBase 01.

I recorded this synth a while ago but never got around to sharing the sounds with you, until today.

Finally I found some time to process the recordings and create a sample pack, so here it is.

Rekkerd Analog Kick Pack features

  • 65 samples, captured with an RME audio card.
  • 24-bit mono wav format.
  • Manually processed with various effects.
  • Files labeled: l=long, m=medium, s=short, v=very short ;-)

Here’s a preview of all the kick sounds included in the pack.

The sample pack is available as a free download (Creative Commons license; you’re free to use these samples however you like, just don’t distribute or sell them). Donations are appreciated.

Drum & bass pioneer Goldie at Red Zone (image by Studiodotcom)

I am delighted to announce a new rekkerd.org contest. This time around it’s all about Drum & Bass, probably my all time favorite music genre.

After discovering this type of music in the early 90′s it has been the one genre that has consistently kept my interest over the years. Paradox, Roni Size, Dom & Roland, Ed Rush, Technical Itch, Source Direct, Photek, Dillinja, Omni Trio, Breakage, Total Science… just to name a few of my favorites.

For this contest Producer Loops has compiled an exclusive sample pack featuring selected sounds from its Drum & Bass Tip Trixxx Vol 1 & 2, and Liquid Drum & Bass Vol 1 & 2 sample libraries.

Download the contest sample pack and create a track using one or more of the 50 loops and single shot sounds provided, and submit it before the deadline; 9 July, 2010, 11.59pm CET.

DNB Competition Sample Pack Downloads: 5645 times

Out of all the entries I will personally select the first prize winner who will receive all four Producer Loops sample libraries from the sample pack. Contestants will vote for 2nd and 3rd prize winners, who will each receive their choice of one of these drum & bass sample packs.

Contest rules

  • Download the “Producer Loops/Rekkerd DNB Competition Pack” and create a song using one or more (but at least one) of the samples from the pack. Maximum song duration is 7 minutes, one entry per contestant allowed.
  • You may process/manipulate the sample(s) from the sample pack in any way you like, be creative.
  • Additional sound sources (e.g. samples, virtual instruments) are allowed as long as they do not violate any laws or third party rights.
  • Submit your entry before 9 July, 2010, 11.59pm CET:
    • upload it to your SoundCloud and send me the link, or
    • email it as an mp3 (minimal 192kbps quality) to dnbcontest@rekkerd.org
Please include your artist name, song title and any additional information you would like to share.
  • By submitting your contest entry you allow rekkerd.org to publish it on SoundCloud (“All Rights Reserved” license).
  • In order to be eligible to win, contestants need to vote for their top 3 within a week after the contest deadline.
  • Prizes will be granted at the discretion of rekkerd.org (First place winner will be picked by rekkerd.org, second and third place will be decided by popular vote).
  • The terms of this contest are subject to change and may be amended without prior notice.

Sample Remix Contest – Win D16 Group SilverLine Collection

Remix by José Carlos Cortizo Pérez @ Flickr

Some of you have been reminding me it has been way too long since the last sample remix contest, and you’re right!

If you are new to rekkerd.org sample remix contests, the idea is simple: create a track using at least one of the samples included in the sample remix download pack below.

The pack includes a total of 32 samples — beats and melodic loops, in 24-bit .wav format (78 MB download).

Sample Remix Pack April 2010 Downloads: 7776 times

I hope these will inspire you to create some great music!
Note that you are free to use any hardware and software you want to create your entry, and you may process the sample(s) from the remix pack as little or much as you like. Be creative!

The contest will run until April 30, 2010, after which all contestants will have a week to pick their top 3 favorites (note: if you don’t vote, you can’t win!).

The top voted entry will win a SilverLine Collection bundle, kindly donated by D16 Group.

The SilverLine Collection comprises of 6 excellent effect plug-ins for Windows and Mac (multiband distortion, phaser, bit crusher, tube distortion, reverb, and chorus).

There may be some additional prizes.

Please submit your entry in mp3 format (192kbit or higher) before the deadline of April 30, 2010. One entry per contestant is allowed.

Update: April 20, 2010:

Please upload your entry to SoundCloud and drop it in my dropbox (make sure the file is not marked “private”) and send me a message or email me so I know you have submitted your entry.

If you do not have a SoundCloud account you can sign up for free. Alternately — if for some reason you really can’t use SoundCloud, you may use the contact form to submit your entry. Don’t forget to include your name/artist name and a link to your mp3 file or include it in an email.

Good luck and have fun!

Entries & voting

May 1, 2010: Voting is now open (and required for a chance to win) for contestants only. You may only vote once, and you can not vote for your own entry.

Please listen to each one of the entries listed below before you vote. It is my hope that you will take the time to post some comments/constructive criticism to other people’s work so everyone gets something out of this!

Send your top 3 favorites in a message to me on Soundcloud before May 8, 2010.

Additionally, if you like to share your votes with everyone you may also post a comment on this page.

Note: if the widgets below don’t load properly, you can also find all the entries here: http://soundcloud.com/rekkerd-contest

Results

Before I announce the winners, I would like to quote Dion (NO-ID), who wrote in the comments:

Funny, there can be a last place … not a bad last place, just different. There so much talent here, that it was really an honor to be in it

I too think you all truly did a great job, and it has been a joy to me to listen to each and every one of your songs. Unfortunately we can only have a few winners (of prizes anyway), so here are the top three voted entries:

  1. Happy Juice by Jackie
  2. Offset Senses by 3ee
  3. In the Gloaming by Rachmiel

With difference of only 2 points it was a pretty close call between Jackie and 3ee, and Jonas the plugexpert came in just one point behind Rachmiel’s third place win.

Jackie will receive the wonderful SilverLine Collection bundle of effect plug-ins by D16 Group. For second and third place winners 3ee and Rachmiel I have a sample library by Big Fish Audio. I will contact you with the details shortly.

Congratulations to the winners, and well done everyone! I hope to see you again for the next contest. Don’t forget to subscribe to the newsletter if you don’t want to miss it.
