9 Soundware releases Drum Key Ultrabeat Presets

9 Soundware Drum Key

9 Soundware has released Drum Key, a collection of presets for the Ultrabeat drum synthesizer within Apple Logic Pro.

The drum kits in this sound set are based on two models. Both synthetically executed, one echoes the structurally simple electronic sounds of drum machines, and the other is inspired by the sound of acoustic drum kits. Each is presented in 10 variations. While unorthodox attributes were incorporated in the programming, sonically, they were designed with versatile simplicity in mind, with an emphasis on punch.

These instruments were crafted with a non-purist, hybrid approach to sound design. In creating the samples, not only were synthesizers purpose-chosen to create each drum component, some of the sounds were constructed modularly, where the attack and tail portions originate from different sources and mixed. At the instrument level, the sample manipulation capabilities of Ultrabeat were also used to add a further layer of sound shaping.

In addition to bass drums (2), snare drums (2), hi-hats (closed, pedal, and open), toms (low, low-mid, high-mid, and high), a crash cymbal, a ride cymbal, a side stick, and a hand clap, each kit also includes one of four sets of percussion sounds. Each set includes a shaker, a scraper, a reversed cymbal, drumsticks, and 3 types of closed hi-hats (an auto-panned 16th note sequence, LFO-based simulations of repeated 32nd and 64th notes). These sounds are generated by the synthesis component of Ultrabeat and are not based on samples.

Drum Key includes 20 .pst files and 300 WAV files, and is a available as a 95 MB download for $29.99 USD.

9 Soundware String

9 Soundware has released String, a collection of presets for the Sculpture synthesizer within Apple Logic Pro.

Harnessing the complex, yet powerful, architecture of the instrument, these sounds explore the possibilities offered by the fusion of naturalistic digital synthesis and highly flexible modulation tools.

The 150 sounds are organized in two main groups. The “Abstract” group, which consists of 120 sounds, features two categories, “Inharmonic” and “Tuned”, both of which contain subcategories “Sustaining” and “Non-sustaining”. The “Simulations” group features 30 sounds that draw on Sculpture’s unique capabilities to emulate musical instruments.

Sculpture’s extraordinary capabilities allow for a range of sounds typically not possible to achieve with a single instrument. Examples include extremely interactive presets (e.g., What is this?.pst, 3D.pst, and Hysteria Lead.pst), tempo synced textures (e.g., Sustained Grey.pst, which features an 8 bar modulation cycle), renderings of found objects (e.g., Lightning Strike.pst, Metal Spring.pst, Cordless Drill.pst, PA Feedback.pst, and Ice Cubes.pst), and sounds ranging from delicate (e.g., Jellyfish.pst, and Twang.pst) to aggressive (e.g., Poltergeist.pst, X-acto Knife.pst). The “Simulations” category includes models of musical instruments such as kick drums, hammered dulcimers, harmonicas, toy pianos, and violins.

String is available for purchase for $29.99 USD.

9 Soundware Kung Fu

9 Soundware has announced the release of Kung Fu, an instrument in EXS24 format.

Inspired by kung fu films of the 1970’s, the drum kit emulates the quintessential sound effects used in fight scenes such as snare-like punches and kicks, swooshes, and sword sounds.

The instrument is based on 100 samples. The source sounds for the samples include synthesis, found objects, and sounds generated by air (based on samples from the Air instrument). In creating these samples, scenes from classic films were studied in great detail and its sound effects were recreated with a combination of Foley-like techniques and painstaking synth programming.

Kung Fu features

  • 100 sounds that are mapped across an 8 octave range in an EXS24 instrument.
  • 7 sound categories: face hit, stomach hit, swoosh, sword clang, sword draw, gong, and crash.
  • 17 MB download includes 1 .EXS file and 100 WAV files (24-bit/44.1 kHz).

Kung Fu is available as a download for $19.99 USD.

9 Soundware Error

9 Soundware has announced the release of Error, a set of 31 instruments for the EXS24 sampler within Apple Logic Pro.

The theme of the sound set is glitching. These sounds are the result of misusing hardware and software to introduce distortions not usually associated with conventional signal processing.

The instruments are based on 100 samples (40 loops and 60 hits). The source sounds for the samples include audio files which were deleted and erroneously retrieved using data recovery software, a DAT machine on vari-speed mode, sounds which were processed and reprocessed with the opposite settings, a digital delay pedal, and a skipping audio CD.

In addition to the 78 MB Error.exs instrument which uses all 100 samples, included are 30 instruments which make extensive use of the modulation capabilities of the EXS24 mkII sampler. Among them are tempo synced instruments, free-form textural instruments, impact instruments, as well as tonal instruments (DCFLdd v1.3.4-1.exs), and noise instruments which allow for sample switching via the mod wheel (Datamoshing.exs). Many are designed to be played primarily with the modulation and pitch bend wheels (and less so with the keys). As they lend themselves more to performance than step sequencing, a midi controller is highly recommended when using this sound set.

Error is available for purchase for $29.99 USD.

9 Soundware Air

9 Soundware has released Air, a new instrument in EXS24 format.

The concept behind the sound set was to use sounds generated by air to create a transparent-sounding percussive instrument. Functionally similar to a hi-hat, the instrument was designed to add rhythmic movement to arrangements, but in a subtler manner.

The samples are of quick blasts of air created with a gas duster, a flyswatter, and a clothesline. The wind sounds, which are delicate and difficult to control, were painstakingly recorded, edited, and programmed into an EXS24 instrument with a high level of sonic detail. While minimalist in approach, the sound set features a wide range of timbres, with many variations on simple bursts to complex sounds that capture the motion of the objects.

Air features

  • 84 sounds (sampled at 2-21 velocities for a total of 402 samples).
  • mapped across a 7 octave range.
  • 28 MB download includes 1 .EXS file and 402 WAV files (24-bit/44.1 kHz).

Air is available now for download for $29.99 USD.

9 Soundware Heartbeat

9 Soundware has released Heartbeat, an instrument in EXS24 format.

The sound set was constructed from samples of human heartbeat recordings, which were enhanced for drum-like punch. The percussive instrument features sounds of pulses resembling kick drums, as well as other internal organ activity.

Heartbeat features

  • Based on 224 samples, captured using an electronic stethoscope, which is more sensitive and capable of capturing quieter sounds compared to acoustic stethoscopes.
  • In addition to heartbeats, which can augment or be used as an alternative to kick drums, also included are samples of the abdomen and a wide variety of sounds created by manipulating the stethoscope.
  • Samples are arranged by velocity (1 to 19 levels), and mapped across an 8 octave range in an EXS24 instrument.
  • 24 MB download includes 1 .EXS file and 402 WAV files (24-bit/44.1 kHz).

Heartbeat is available now for $29.99 USD.
