Audio Damage Axon, virtual percussion sequencer/synth updated to v1.1.0

Audio Damage Axon

Audio Damage has released version 1.1.0 of Axon, a virtual instrument featuring a neuron sequencer coupled with 7 individual FM synths.

Axon is a strange creature, and we won’t tell you otherwise. Our goal was to come up with a new style of percussion sequencer/synth that wasn’t linear and x0xy, and we succeeded beyond our wildest expectations. The Neuron Sequencer in Axon is a fundamentally different way of thinking about rhythmic sequencing, and results in new patterns and styles that will bring your IDM, dance, and ambient tracks to another place.

Changes in Axon v1.1.0

  • Multiple Outputs: 7 stereo outputs added, one for each voice/neuron. These are pre-mixer, and are not affected by mute, solo, pan, or fader.
  • Zero Reset: A third sync mode has been added, RST. In this mode, Axon syncs to host, but every time you stop the host transport, the counters in each Neuron reset to zero. The net result is that Axon becomes much more determinate.
  • Bug Fixes: The timing bug in Logic has been dealt with, as well as another obscure automation bug in the AudioUnit version, and some other minor bugs.
  • CPU Load Improvement: All versions have been further optimized for a slight improvement in CPU usage.

Axon is available to purchase as an instrument plug-in for PC & Mac (VST/AU) for $59 USD.

Audio Damage Discord3, pitch-shifting delay updated (Windows 64-bit version)

Audio Damage Discord3

Audio Damage has released version 1.1.0c of the Windows version of Discord3, a multi-effect plug-in for Windows and Mac.

Changes in Discord3 v.1.1.0c (Windows)

  • 64-bit Version: The installer now allows the installation of a 64-bit Windows VST of Discord3.
  • Minor Bug Fixes: Several minor bugs in the installer and in the plug-in itself have been addressed, notably the “beep” bug that occurs occasionally in the Granular engine.

This update is recommended for all Discord3 users. The OS X 64-bit versions will be released in the near future.

Audio Damage releases Discord3

Audio Damage Discord3

Audio Damage has released Discord3, a comprehensive refresh of the popular Discord series of multi-effects.

From subtle ADT effects to completely chaotic granular destruction, and everything in between, Discord3 is a capable and broad-reaching multi-effect plug-in.

The pitch-shifter consists of three separate algorithms: a “vintage” mode (the original Discord algorithm, modeled on the Eventide H910 and H949), a “clean” mode for more modern shifting sounds, and a “granular” mode for experimental effects. Each mode has its strengths, depending on the input material, and Discord3 has a broad palette of capabilities as a result. The P1 and P2 algorithms have full control over the buffer (window) size of the shift effect, for fine tuning the shift to the input signal, or for stranger sound effects. At the extremes of the six-octave shift range, some truly strange aliasing and artifacts can be had with this control.

Now, to be clear, if you’re looking for a nice, clean diatonic pitch shifter for fine surgery and re-pitching the full program, you need to look elsewhere. Discord3 is a tool for sound design, barberpole shifting delays, and special effects; think Eno, Visconti, Bowie, or Dirty Mind-era Prince and you’ll be on the right track.

Discord3 features

  • Pitch Shifting: Discord3 contains a pair of shifters with three separate algorithms (Vintage, Clean, and Granular) for different styles of pitch shifting.
  • Buffer Size Control: The P1 (Vintage) and P2 (Clean) algorithms have a Buffer Size control, from 32 to 2048 samples, for fine-tuning the pitch shifting effect.
  • Delay: Tempo-synced or free-running delays with feedback, cross-feedback, and a sophisticated bandpass filter.
  • Modulation: Discord3 has a pair of LFOs that can modulate delay time, pitch shift amount, and filter center frequency.
  • True Stereo Operation: Discord3 has a true stereo signal path, with entirely independent control over each side.
  • All New GUI: Discord3 has a completely re-designed GUI, with animated displays and a unique “grab-the-digit” value adjustment method.
  • MIDI Note Control: Six octaves of pitch-shifting can be controlled with MIDI note input.
  • Full MIDI Learn: Discord3 features MIDI learn for every parameter, for full hardware control.

Discord3 is available to purchase as an effect plug-in for PC and Mac (AU/VST) for $59 USD. An upgrade is available to Discord v1, v1.5, and/or v2 users for $10 USD.

Barry Wood's NAMM Oddities 2010

Some interesting things I found recently:

# NAMM Oddities 2010

Barry is back with the NAMM Oddities of 2010:

My NAMM experience went really quite smoothly this year. I didn't have to deal with any injuries or camera failures.

The show was a little smaller than last year, which was most apparent in my favorite haunt, Hall E. There were some open areas where there weren't any booths set up at all. That being said, there was no shortage of invention and innovation at the show. Because of that, I think the great unsung heroes of the Oddities need their own motto: "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor global economic collapse stays the mad genius from the swift creation of strange musical devices."

# skewworks Pyxis – How would you like to be able to run compiled programs from a uSD drive? Maybe you'd like to create an app that's closed source? Or perhaps you're just looking to display full screen 320×240 bitmaps using the Arduino. If any of those sounds good to you than Pyxis is the OS for you.

Wiimote-help in pd

# Use the WiiMote as a musical instrument

Winko Erades van den Berg on making music using a computer and a Wiimote:

An article that appeared on the Create Digital Music website, about making music using the WiiMote and a computer, drew my attention. Several hints were given on the how to, but as always in doing new things the information was scattered everywhere and nowhere.

After reading many articles and watching many videos I found out how to realize a working setup for myself. In this article I’ll try to explain the steps needed to create a working setup for yourself.

# Primer on new Echo Nest search_tracks, capsule, and get_analysis APIs

Echo Nest co-founder Brian Whitman demoed the alpha version of a new set of Echo Nest APIs.

At Stockholm Hack Day we’re announcing three or four new APIs that are going to stay in our “alpha” sandbox for now. These are officially unsupported but we will work with anyone who has a use case for them. For now, the instructions will stay here until we promote them to production APIs.

Mellodrama: The Mellotron Movie

# Mellodrama: The Mellotron Movie

Mellodrama, a documentary by Dianna Dilworth, explores the rising and falling fortunes of the Mellotron – the first musical keyboard to "sample" the sounds of other instruments – from its birth in a California garage in the 1950s, through its dominance on concert stages in the 1970s, through its almost religious cult of followers in the 2000s. From the Beatles' "Strawberry Fields Forever" to Black Sabbath to Kanye West, Mellodrama is a 50-year odyssey of musical invention, revolution, betrayal, and rediscovery.

Includes 8-page booklet with essay by Mike Pinder of the Moody Blues, Mellotron and Chamberlin production timelines, and more.

# SampleRadar: 316 free Parisian-style samples

MusicRadar.com's latest batch of free samples is here:

The collection we're giving you here has a distinctly French flavour, being inspired by the likes of Kavinsky, Justice, Mr Oizo and the artists on the Kitsuné label. Download it and give your music a sense of Parisian style – you'd be 'in-Seine' to miss out!

Plughugger Drum Machine Shootout

# Drum machine shootout

Plughugger has a comprehensive review of Audio Damage Tattoo, Audiorealism ADM and Sonic Charge Microtonic.

This review compares three software drum machines and how they stand against each other. Three audioguns, twenty one sonic bullets. Two swedes and one american. Drum roll, please…

While there are a whole bunch of drum synthesizers on the market and many of them are very competent – my selection ended up with Audio Damage Tattoo, Audiorealism ADM and Sonic Charge Microtonic. My primary criteria was that they should be available for both PC and Mac – and they should be able to create more than one type of overall sound. I chose not to include any of the drum machines from the polish developer D16, as each and every drum machine is locked to a specific model and besides – I don’t own licenses for any of them.
Waldorf Attack is a classic that I seriously considered to include, but decided against as it doesn’t contain a sequencer. Also, three products against each other is clear as a german sausage soup. But the Waldorf Attack is a fantastic drum synthesizer, especially for creating weird electronic percussion noises.

I love Microtonic (and the D16 drum machines), but I think it’s inevitable I’ll end up getting Tattoo at some point.

# Mini Kit: PH001

Timothy has posted a nice little drum kit:

This is a mini kit with bd, snare, 2 ch’s and a oh. They are from one hits I have either recorded from drum machines or found around. Processed with eq and compression and some final touches to each sound. Hoping to give you a nice starter kit with a solid foundation. There is also a Ableton Live session with the kit in a drumrack with further processing on.
