Tonehammer releases Gnomehammer: Human Beat Box

Tonehammer Human Beat Box

Tonehammer has released Human Beat Box, another free sample pack as part of the Gnomehammer December Celebration.

Human Beat Box (HBB) is one of those things that was cool, then uncool, then cool, then uncool and now its back with vengeance. Gnomehammer wanted to celebrate the trend by sharing a selection of new custom HBB patches made by human beat boxing through PVC pipes. The patch was recorded in our epic hall and the ensemble consists of four individuals with no successful history in beat boxing.

Gnomehammer Human Beat Box features

  • HBB PVC Pipe Ensemble (HBB recorded a series of PVC pipes in ensemble session):
    • Bass drum (10 round robin)
    • Snare drum (10 round robin)
    • Close hi-hat (10 round robin)
    • Open hi-hat (10 round robin)
    • High tom (10 round robin)
    • Mid tom (10 round robin)
    • Low tom (10 round robin)
    • Rimshot / click (10 round robin)

Note: This freebie is only available for 24 hours, so grab it while you can. We have tons more coming during December – so ensure you check every day …

9 Soundware releases Beatbox

9 Soundware Beatbox

9 Soundware has released Beatbox, a multi-format set of human beatbox loops.

While it is widely acknowledged as an “extended element of hip-hop”, beatboxing has been a long overlooked craft outside of the culture that is devoted to the art form. These fluid beats can be an old-school, yet refreshing, way to literally humanize quantized drum loops. The 127 loops were chosen from hours of hard-hitting, rapid-fire performances with enough spit to DRENCH a pop filter and drive it to the ground. From slow and steady to fast and furious, these blistering grooves are well suited for a variety of musical situations.

Beatbox features

  • 127 loops (1 to 4 bars in length) at tempos 80, 100, 120, and 140 BPM.
  • All 127 files have been meticulously sliced and turned into REX2 and Apple Loops files.
  • The 184 MB download contains all three formats (24-bit/44.1 kHz) and will work seamlessly with most popular applications including Apple Logic Pro/Express, Propellerheads Reason, Spectrasonics Stylus RMX, and Ableton Live.

Beatbox is available now for $29.99 USD.

Visit 9 Soundware for more information and some audio demos.

Some interesting things I found recently:

DIY turntable by Paulo Paulo Rebordão

# The Oil Rig Turntable: The Turntable

Paulo Rebordão writes:

After coming across some DIY efforts at building turntables, I too decided to give it a try… For the turntable, I went for an all aluminium construction and a decidedly “mechanical” look.

# little-scale: SP0256-AL2 Sample Pack

Sebastian offers 59 samples (16 bit, 44.1KHz mono .wav files) that have been recorded directly from an SP0256-AL2 chip.

These represent all 59 sounded allophones that the SP0256-AL2 is capable of producing via its internal ROM. The included sounds are named by the allophone in terms of each audio file.

Gijs Gieskes Motor Keys - MK Tape 4 (GT 4)

# Motor Keys

This project can be used to make music with small dc electro motors, controled by a small keyboard.

Gijs writes:

A project i have been working on for to long..
In it i use a keyboard to control DC electronic motors to make music. There there are endless possibilitys.

# Tiny Subversions: First demo, MeggySynth – Darius Kazemi is writing a music synthesizer program for the Meggy Jr. RGB kit: This is my first run of a little live performance sound and video device I'm calling MeggySynth. It's definitely just a proof of concept, I'm hoping to make things more impressive all around. I'll be using the A/B buttons for pitch shifting, too.

# Fretless Fader Midi Prototype with Vestax Controller One

This is the first public view of the Fretless Fader system I designed for use with the Controller One (posted February 22, 2009). With this you can cut and change notes through 2 octaves without taking your hands away from the vinyl and fader.

# Max 5.0.6 – Lots of bug fixes and new features.

DIS.PLAY Impress

# DIS.PLAY » Blog Archive » Final documentation: Impress

Impress is the deliverance of the touch screen from its technical stiffness, coldness and rigidity. It breaks the distance in the relationship of human and technology, because it is not any longer the user which is subjected to technology, but in this case the display itself has to cave in to the human. Impress is a chance of approach of user and technology, above all, from technology.

It is a matter of a flexible display consisting of foam and force sensors which is deformable and feels pleasantly soft. Impress works with the parameters position and time like other touch screens as well, but in addition to that, it reacts, above all, on the intensity of pressure.

# YouTube – “Monkey Jazz” : BEARDYMAN & mr_hopkinson™

Fantastic video of Beardyman doing the jazz thing.

Combining the talents of 2 times UK Beatbox Champion Beardyman and master of the edit mr_hopkinson, this is a one take performance by Beardyman using live looping technology that has been visually explained and augmented by mr_hopkinson's edit and animation.

More here: http://www.monkeyjazz.co.uk

# elastic~ – the ultimate pitch-shifting time-stretching looping MaxMSP object – Incorporating the same algorhythm as software giants Cubase, Ableton Live, and Kontakt, elastic~ is a powerful and intuitive tool for looping, pitch-bending and time-stretching audio within MaxMSP.

# Touch the Wave – Objective-Audio – Free iPhone app for looping and scratching. More info over at CDM.

Arturia Origin

# Music Thing: Review: Arturia Origin
Tom Whitwell: It’s big, it’s expensive, it’s sexy. Why don’t I want one?

Why am I writing this, rather than playing with the thing? How come I've already taken the top off to have a look inside and see how it all works? Because the Origin has crossed that line – it's not a hardware synth, it's a computer in a box covered in knobs.

# Noise.io – iPhone Synth – iPhone Synthesizer – Noise.io is one of the most intriguing applications for iPhone/iPod Touch which is available exclusively on the AppStore. It is a unique, new-generation sound synthesizer for iPhone / iPod Touch featuring revolutionary user interface and technologies: ESFM, ControlSurface, SoftRibbon and many more. Noise.io has hit the AppStore on the 30th of October 2008 and is available for purchase for $9.99

# Software Programmer Dreams of New, Small Music Machines – Belgian musician Marc Resibois talk about little music machines.

Peter Kirn writes:

Marc “Nostromo” Resibois, aka “m.-.n,” lives the digital life of computers. The Belgian musician and hacker [@MySpace] is renowned as a Game Boy musician, as the inventor of legendary Nintendo tracker LittleGPTracker, and even has a day job as a programmer for VJ software maker Arkaos. But lately, his thoughts have turned to more traditional synthesis hardware – hardware that acts as tiny computers. Nothing is going to shake me from my love of computers, but that doesn’t mean I’m not interested in having what he describes sitting next to mine. Here’s what he imagines – and it’s a variation on a theme I think we’ll see a lot in the coming weeks and months here on CDM. And without giving away the punchline, that Nintendo DS is going to make another appearance.
