Bolder Sounds releases Mini Sax, free sample library for Kontakt

Bolder Sounds Mini Sax

Bolder Sounds has released Mini Sax, a free sample library for Native Instruments Kontakt.

This instrument is the creation of Juan Del Rio in Redondo Beach, California. You can watch him on YouTube by searching his name with ‘mini sax’ or email him at juandelrio@yahoo.com if you are interested in buying one, they sell for an incredible price of $40.00!

The sound of the mini sax has somewhat of a cross between the clarinet and the sax. It is in the key of Bb and is an octave in range. For this sample set, I have expanded to range to 2 octaves going from G2 to G4 using polyphonation from the excellent Redmatica Keymap application.

Bo Clausen has contributed his usual wonderful KSP Kontakt scripting which is explained in a bit more detail later in the .pdf manual. Thank You Bo!

Bolder Sounds updates Handbells to V2, Kontakt sample library

Bolder Sounds Handbells V2

Bolder Sounds has released Handbells V2, a handbells sample library for Native Instruments Kontakt.

Version 2 of this unique 2.4 gigabyte sample library has doubled in size since version 1 was released in November of 2009.

Three more octaves of Handbells as well as 2 new articulations (Mart and Mart-Lift) have been added. On the low end, C2 and G2 bells as well as the octave above that (C3 – B3). On the high end we have added bells C7 – C8. And to round it off, a very flexible user interface with KSP scripting has been created by Bo Clausen.

Handbells V2 for Kontakt 3 or higher is available to purchase for the introductory price of $119 USD through January 1, 2011. Current owners of the Handbell V1 library can upgrade to V2 for $40 USD, also until January 1, 2011.

Bolder Sounds Celtic Pipes, version 2 adds KSP scripting (+ free Thumb Piano released)

Bolder Sounds Celtic Pipes

Bolder Sounds has released version 2 of Celtic Pipes, a sample library featuring a comprehensive set of Bagpipes, Uilleann Pipes and Pub Pipes.

We’ve sampled every single musical note these instruments make, samples are also presented in both short and long loop lengths, mapped out in authentic note ranges with extensions on the highest sample. You can set a drone into motion within the use of the sustain pedal in the lower octaves, and then wail away on the melodic (chanter) part of the pipes mono phonically using pitch bend and continuous controllers without affecting the drones, all on the same midi channel, making for stunningly realistic pipe samples.

The Kontakt version of the Celtic Pipes has been updated to version 2 with newly added KSP scripting. It is a free upgrade for exisitng owners.

Celtic Pipes is available to purchase for Kontakt 3+, EXS24, and Gigastudio 2 for $29.96 USD until 24 July, 2010 in the Bolder Sounds Summer Sale (regular price $39.95 USD).

Bolder Sounds has also released a free Thumb Piano sample library for Kontakt 3+ and Apple EXS24.

This thumb piano (also called Kalimba, Sansa or Mbira) comes from a family of instruments originally from Africa. The range of this particular instrument is 2 octaves plus a major 3rd.

It was sampled with both plucks from the flesh of the thumb as well as the finger nail of the thumb for a brighter sound. Also each sample zone has 3 round robin samples assigned to it. So if you play the same key 3 times in a row, each time you will hear a different sample.

Bo Clausen has contributed some wonderful KSP Kontakt scripting as well which is documented in more detail later in this manual. Thank You Bo!

Bolder Sounds releases Crystal Glasses Volume 2 and Granular Water Bottle

Bolder Sounds Crystal Glasses Volume 2

Bolder Sounds has announced the release of Crystal Glasses Volume 2, a sample library for Native Instruments Kontakt.

The Crystal Glasses volume 2 is a project I began in 2007. I worked on it sporadically over the last 3 years. Bolder Sounds already has a very popular sound set entitled Crystal Glasses and Meditation Bowls. So – why create another? The crystals recorded in that library date back to the mid 1990’s when 16 bit mono samples was the standard format ( the Meditation Bowls were sampled at a later date in stereo ). Also – the idea of recording these crystal glasses as a group of glasses opened up the door to different sound design opportunities.

Crystal Glasses Volume 2 features

  • Sampled Articulations:
    • Hit Crystal Glasses – (3 round-robins per sample zone).
    • Soft Hit Crystal Glasses – (2 round-robins per sample zone).
    • Singing Crystal Pads – wet finger along rim of glass.
    • Granular Crystal Pads – Ethereal pads created via granular synthesis.
    • Bowed Crystal Glasses – Both short and long articulations.
    • Crystal Morphs – Kontakt multi instruments which morph between individual instruments.
  • Extensive scripting for Kontakt giving the user an elegant and intuitive user interface.
  • Help menu built into the Kontakts front panel.
  • 24 bit stereo sample in .wav format.
  • Total size of the Crystal Glass Volume 2 library is 490 mb (270 .rar download).

Note: Crystal Glasses Volume 2 requires full version of Kontakt 3+. The Kontakt PLAYER will only run for 30 minutes in demo mode.

Crystal Glasses Volume 2 is available to purchase for $49 USD.

Bolder Sounds has also released Granular Water Bottle, a free instrument for Kontakt and EXS24.

This the Klean Kanteen water bottle I drag around with me throughout my day. It has a very nice resonant ‘bonk’ sound to it. Originally I thought I’d sample it as more of a traditional percussion instrument and fill it with sand, rice and water etc.. But once I started applying granular synthesis to just a few hits that I recorded that was the end of the line for me. A whole weird world opened up

Bolder Sounds releases Soprano and Baritone African Marimbas

Bolder Sounds Soprano and Baritone African Marimbas

Bolder Sounds has released Soprano and Baritone African Marimbas, a free sound offering features a Baritone and Soprano African Marimbas sampled with resonators.

You will see 3 instrument files – The Soprano, Baritone and a instrument called Soprano Bari Marimba Mix. This is a keymap with both the Baritone and Soprano Marimbas combined. Since the Baritone and Soprano overlap in range (Baritone- G1 to G3 & Soprano C3 to C5) I chose to delete some of the Soprano Marimbas lower notes.

Also, Bo Clausen has contributed a very nice Kontakt script to the library as well. Be sure to read the nice Help Menu page that Bo has set up on Kontak’s front panel – Thank You Bo!

The Baritone and Soprano African Marimbas have anywhere from 5 to 10 velocity switch samples
per key.

The Soprano and Baritone African Marimbas are available as a free download for Kontakt 2+ and EXS24.

Bolder Sounds releases Toy and African Marimbas and updates Hammered Dulcimer Trilogy and Bavarian Zither

Bolder Sounds Toy and African Marimbas

Bolder Sounds has released Toy and African Marimbas, a free sample library for Kontakt and EXS24.

This FREE sound offering originated from a musician named Barry Higgins. Barry contacted me and wanted to “give something back” for all the Bolder FREE Sound offerings. He sent me a sample set of a Toy Marimba he owns to be shared with other Bolder users. Barry is also a maker of fine Native American flutes. You can visit his website at http://www.whitecrowflutes.com. Thank you Barry!

I decided to augment the Toy Marimba offering with a set of samples I’ve had sitting around for years – a bass and tenor African marimba set complete with buzzing resonators. I’ve chosen to map both the bass and tenor marimba to the same keymap for convenience. Also, Bo Clausen has contributed a very nice Kontakt script to the library as well. I’ll post the alto and soprano marimbas at a later date.

Toy and African Marimbas features

  • 32 MB library for Kontakt 2+ and EXS24.
  • The African marimbas have anywhere from 5 to 10 velocity switch samples per key.
  • Kontakt script by Bo Clausen.
Bolder Sounds Hammered Dulcimer Trilogy

Bolder Sounds has also updated the Hammered Dulcimer Trilogy to version 2 and the Bavarian Zither sample library was updated with a KSP script which is more streamlined in accessing the various articulations.

Changes in Hammered Dulcimer Trilogy V2

  • Flexible scripting has been added to the Kontakt format.
  • Channel Strip Settings for the EXS24 as well as improved programming.
  • Now available for a reduced price of $99 USD for the entire set, or $39 USD for each each dulcimer individually.

Bolder Sounds releases Handbells

Bolder Sounds Handbells

Bolder Sounds has released Handbells, a sample library featuring a set of handbells.

For this sample library a beautiful 3 octave set of handbells were recorded in 9 different articulations totalling 1.2 gigabytes. The samples are 24 bit stereo and most articulations are presented with 2 round-robins per bell.

Handbells articulations

  • Handbell Clapper — samples are created with the traditional technique of holding it against the shoulder, bell-upwards, and then swinging the bell through an elliptical shape to cause the clapper to strike the casting of the bell.
  • Suspended Handbell with a soft rubber malle — samples were recorded with the bells suspended from the ceiling of the room while being struck with a soft rubber mallet.
  • Suspended Handbell with a hard rubber mallet — samples were recorded with the bells suspended from the ceiling of the room while being struck with a hard rubber mallet.
  • Suspended Handbell with a plastic chopstick — samples were recorded with the bells suspended from the ceiling of the room while being struck with a plastic chopstick. This creates a great deal of high frequency content.
  • Singing Handbells — The Singing Handbells sound is created by running a wood dowel along the rim of the handbell, similar to the way you can run a wet finger along the edge of a crystal glass and make it sing.
  • Plucked Handbells — is accomplished by using the thumb and forefinger to force the clapper head into the casting while the bell is on the table, producing a staccato note.
  • Malleted Handbells on a padded table — samples are created by striking the bell with a rubber mallet while the bell is resting on the foam of a padded table. This produces a tone brighter and more percussive than the plucked samples.
  • Handbell Shakes — is accomplished by quickly ringing the bell back and forth so that the clapper strikes both the front and back of the bell casting in rapid succession. This creates a continuous tone, as opposed to normal ringing in which the tone decays rapidly after being rung.
  • Handbell table hit endings — samples are typically used for the end of a piece of music or at a cadence. Before this sound is heard the bell is already ringing, so you hear just a small portion of the pitch of the bell followed by the percussive hit on the foam table.

Handbells is available for Kontakt 2 or higher (EXS24 coming soon) for the introductory price of $69 USD until January 1, 2010.
