TIONEB wins Boss Loop Station World Championship

Related: , , , , , , , Posted in news on Apr 03, 2012 - comment 0 comments

The 2nd Annual BOSS Loop Station World Championship was held in Frankfurt, Germany, last week during day one of the Musikmesse/Prolight + Sound trade show.

BOSS Loop Station World Championship

BOSS crowned French beatboxer TIONEB the 2012 BOSS Loop Station World Champion after delivering an intense looping performance featuring only his voice. Loop-based music making is a leading form of musical expression today, and BOSS’ innovative Loop Station products have played a major role in the rise of this art form.

HBlockX’s German rocker Henning Wehland emceed the unique musical contest alongside an esteemed panel of international judges including vocalist/instrumentalist Ricoloop, percussionist Michael Shack, guitarist Alex Hutchings, and German hip hop sensation Samy Deluxe.

After winning regional and national semi-final rounds held during 2011, musicians from 19 different countries earned a chance to showcase their looping talents on the world stage in Frankfurt. Of the 19 finalists who qualified, 12 made their way to Frankfurt to compete. TIONEB from France took home a Grand Prize of €3,000. Beatboxer En.Dru of Czech Republic won Second Prize, beatboxer Vakhtang from Russia was awarded Third Prize, and Brazil’s singer/actress Liah Soares received special recognition for an outstanding computer keyboard rhythm and blues performance.

“Strong competition captivated the Frankfurt audience as France’s TIONEB mesmerized the judges,” said Gary Lenaire, Roland Corporation U.S. BOSS & Guitar Product Manager. Lenaire attended the world championship in support of U.S. finalist Angela Sheik, a master looper, vocalist and instrumentalist who wowed a U.S. audience in October with an intriguing looping performance with a Theremin and a RC Looper. An audience of more than 400 enthusiastic music fans attended the show, held at the King Kamehameha club, one of Frankfurt’s most popular night spots.

Rhythmic Robot releases Doctor 110 for Kontakt

Rhythmic Robot has released Doctor 110, a sample library for Native Instruments Kontakt featuring the sounds of the Boss Dr. Rhythm DR-110 drum machine.

Rhythmic Robot Doctor 110

The DR-110 was a neat little analog drum machine from the early 1980s with six basic sounds, including a tight kick drum and some unusually metallic hi-hats. It was one of the earliest budget drum machines to feature an LCD to aid grid-based programming of patterns. It also featured an Accent control which could be applied to any kit piece.

The Rhythmic Robot Doctor 110 samples the original DR-110 at 24-bit, and samples each kit piece through the entire travel of the Accent control. This allows the user to set the Accent level on a per-kit-piece basis, either from the user interface front panel or via velocity, which makes creating humanised beats very simple. Further controls over the kit pieces include pan and level, plus a complement of effects including buss compression, Tube saturation, full-on Distortion and bit-crushing.

Doctor 110 features

  • All kit pieces of the DR-110 sampled through the whole range of the Accent control.
  • 24-bit samples.
  • Either front-panel or Velocity control of Accent level.
  • Compression, Saturation, Distortion and Bit-crushing as standard.

The Doctor 110 library for Kontakt (full version 4.2.3 or higher) is available to purchase for £4.95 GBP.

WaveShaper releases MR-10 Grey Matter and Soul Sisters Trio drum sample packs

WaveShaper has announced the MR-10 Grey Matter and Soul Sisters Trio, two new drumsample packs.

The MR-10 is a compact analogue drum machine from the early 80′s made by Yamaha. It features 5 pads that you can hit to trigger the sounds and some cheesy tango & waltz presets.

WaveShaper MR-10 Grey Matter

This tiny grey box has a rather characteristic sound, with a deep kick (somewhat reminiscent of the infamous 909) and a quite unique snare. The tone knob lets you shape the sound of the kit, and it is very efficient on the toms and snare. It sounds 200% analogue, but not like the usual suspects, so this carefully recorded WaveShaper pack will fit in any of your music productions, from electro pop to doom exotica !

As always, great care has been taken to keep the original sound alive and kicking with a high headroom, but some subtle tube coloring and compression assures you to make this kit sound unique.

The pro kit gathers 5 tone variations from each of the 7 individual sounds, in stereo, 24bit, 48khz wav files. It is available to purchase for $1.40 USD. A free kit includes one full sample kit (7 sounds, mono, 16bit/44.1khz wav files).

The Soul Sisters Trio sample pack includes samples from three retro drum synthesizers.

WaveShaper DR-55B

Built at the same time, these three small retro boxes share several features, but like soul sisters, they each have their unique character and a different sound.

The Boss DR-55 features a rimshot and a tone control. It was used by a bunch of artists in the past decades for its signature sound.

The Soundmaster SR-88 has a very delicate, soft, analogue sound and is perfect for electro tracks or sweet retro songs.

The Amdek RMK-100 is the rarest of the bunch. It was built by Roland and sold as a DIY project, which makes it very hard to find. The sound is the rawest of the three, and the hi-hats are a true gem for any acid and electro lover.

I recorded them with the usual care, through a custom chain of gentle tube compression and a tube preamp. I made several takes in order to capture the subtle analogue variations of each sound, and also processed them with a vintage hardware eq (and some distortion on one kit to make it dirtier and punchier). Any round-robin able softsampler will love to be fed by these analogue sounds!

The pro kit gathers 57 samples, 48khz-24bit stereo Wav files), available to purchase for $4.90 USD. The nasty pack contains more than 170 samples, priced $6.90 USD. A free kit contains some samples from the 3 drum machines (17 samples, 44,1khz-16bit mono Wav files).
