Voltage Disciple has announced the release of Voltage Lookup Table Synths, an Ableton Live Pack in collaboration with Adventure Kid.
Based on close to 2000 analogue and digital waveforms presented in 21 Sampler instruments, the pack lets you explore wave-sequencing, waveform lookup tables previously only available in analogue modules such as the PISTON HONDA, WMD GAMMAWAVE SOURCE and the BUCHLA COMPLEX WAVEFORM GENERATOR.
Each module in the pack contains filters, lookup rates panning modulation, reverb and delays as well as bit reduction, complex delays, vocoders and many other effects all routed to macro controls. The lookup rates go from 0 to audio rate modulation speeds. The waveshape for the lookup tables rates can be selected or varied from Samplers available LFO waveforms. The instruments offer a rich sonic palette with each containing up to 100 waveforms.
There is also a C64 based module as well as a granular waveform based module for lo-fi and chip based needs. VOLTAGE DISCIPLES advanced Sampler programming as yet unseen in any LIVE instrument to date along with ADVENTURE KIDS waveforms bring you a new depth of sonic power to LIVE.
Voltage Table Lookup Synths is available to purchase for $10 AUD.
Madrona Labs has announced the release of Aalto, a virtual synthesizer for Mac.
Aalto is a new semi-modular software synthesizer with an innovative, patchable UI, distinctive sounds, and a charming personality.
Subjectively speaking, Aalto can make a wide range of sounds, from lush to edgy, including some very complicated ones, without sounding too thick in a mix. Aalto’s sounds are not hyped or confined, they are wide-range, open and natural.
Buchla-inspired complex oscillator, with FM, timbre and waveshape controls that enable a wide range of expressive sounds.
Sounds are uniquely malleable and alive, in part because they are made with dynamic calculation, not static wavetables.
Designed as much for sequencing patterns as for playing individual notes.
Each voice has a separate, built-in sequencer with a patchable, independently controllable rate and offset that make it easy to achieve evolving, chaotic textures.
Each voice includes a lowpass gate module with a vactrol emulation in the control path.
Patchable waveguide / delay module with a waveshaper and a peaking EQ is built into the feedback loop (can be used as an additional oscillator or waveguide).
State-variable filter topology with mixable simultaneous outputs, tuned to have a similar range to an Oberheim SEM filter.
Aalto is currently available to purchase as an instrument plug-in for Mac (AU), priced at $99 USD. The license is for Aalto on all future formats and platforms as they are released. Mac and Windows VST versions are planned for fall 2010.
Call it cable addiction. Italian-born musician Alessandro Cortini, known for his live keyboard work with Nine Inch Nails, retreated into the studio with classic and contemporary Buchla modular synths to make “SONOIO.” Guided by his uniquely personal compositional style, he was able to wrangle that mess of chords and layers of analog sound into a genuine collection of beautifully-written songs, stacked high with Buchla timbral goodness.
Check some tracks from Alessandro’s new album below.
This is a question I see often: if the final form of the project is 44.1kHz or 48khz, why bother recording at high sample rates? There isn’t any one answer to that question, there are lots of answers. But I thought it might be useful to illustrate a reason by using a real world example…. And if you cannot be bothered reading all of this, then just remember this: Plugins LOVE dense data!
Tom Shear has had some time with the Monotron and shares his thoughts.
Whether or not the Monotron is for you really depends on your expectations. I've already outlined what it does best and if that sounds appealing to you, I can recommend you just place your order and get one now. You'll have an amazing amount of fun with this thing. If you're looking for a budget MS-20 to blast out some wall shaking basslines or other melodic bits, you're probably going to be disappointed.
Tom has also posted a free sample pack with some percussion sounds, sweeps, shrieks, and some tonal sounds from the Monotron. Get them here.
If you're a Beastie Boys fan Christmas has come early, folks. The brain/brains behind the sample source blog Miscreant Productions have compiled pretty much every single song that has been sampled by the Beastie Boys from Licensed to Ill to To The 5 Boroughs. As if that wasn't enough, they've even gone and thrown said samples on Megaupload for y'all to download. I know epic right.
In the words of the trio themselves “ch-ch-ch-ch-check it out”:
Inspired by the classic spherical speaker array Instructable from user mzed, Charles Visnic created these cool wireless speakers by transplanting the guts of a pair of RocketFish speakers into some birch bowls from Ikea, mounted rim-to-rim.
