Allen & Heath has announced the ZED-16FX and ZED-18, two new models to its ZED range of multi-purpose live sound and recording mixers.

x

The new ZED-16FX and ZED-18 each have 10 fully-featured mono channels and 3 or 4 dual stereo channels, respectively, fulfilling the demand for increased channel counts in a compact format.

In keeping with the rest of the range, both mixers have a connection for USB send and return for recording, playback and effects. The 10 mono Mic/Line inputs feature Allen & Heath’s acclaimed DuoPre two stage preamp, 3-band MusiQ EQ with swept mid frequency, and 100mm faders, all in a compact, rack mountable format. The stereo inputs have 2-band EQ and inputs for extra sources, and there are 4 auxes accessible from each mono and stereo channel.

Additionally, the ZED-16FX has a built-in FX processor with TAP tempo delay settings and a 24 bit/48kHz conversion rate, with access to a comprehensive set of 16 in-house designed effects derived from Allen & Heath’s iLive pro touring digital mixing system.

“The ZED-18 and 16FX are the perfect size and format for so many applications. In a rack-sized chassis we’ve packed in 10 mono channels while retaining all the stereo inputs (on ZED-18 there are 7 stereo inputs including the USB). The monitoring and output configuration is the same as the ZED-14 and 12FX, which is really useful in both live sound mixing and studio situations, and they are designed and built to last for ages. Having just used one for a fantastic gig with The Deadly Gentlemen (perk of the job!), I can say that they are an absolute joy to mix on!” comments Allen & Heath R&D designer, Mike Griffin.

Cakewalk’s SONAR X1 LE music production software is bundled with the ZED-18 and 16FX mixers, enabling the user to perform many different tasks, for live performance, live recording, studio recording, or studio mixing. The combination of ZED and SONAR allows the user to capture a straightforward recording of a stereo mix, record tracks individually to build up a song, or insert an FX plug-in from SONAR.

ZED mixers are built to a professional standard, with rotary controls secured to the front panel with steel nuts and high quality components have been used throughout, including Neutrik mic XLR and 1/4″ jack connectors.

Roland R-26 portable recorder shipping

Roland has announced it is now shipping the R-26 Portable Recorder, a handheld device that provides up to six simultaneous channels of pro-quality audio recording to SD/SDHC media.

Roland R-26 portable recorder

With two types of built-in stereo mics, XLR/TRS combo inputs, USB audio interface functionality, and much more, the compact R-26 is perfect for demanding applications such as solo and ensemble music recording, environmental sound capture, broadcasting, and audio/video production.

Designed from the ground up for superior sound quality and ease of use, the R-26 is filled with features that will satisfy both pros and hobbyists alike. For the ultimate mobile flexibility, the R-26 can be powered either with the included AC adaptor, four internal AA batteries, or an external battery.

Two stereo mic types — omnidirectional and XY — are integrated into the R-26’s stylish chassis, providing mic options to suit any style of audio recording. In addition, there are two XLR/TRS combo inputs with phantom power for connecting external mics or line-level devices, plus a stereo mini-jack for a plug-in powered mic. The preamps for all mic channels are derived from the hi-res preamps found in Roland’s R-44 commercial field recorder.

Audio from the onboard mics and external inputs can be mixed internally in the R-26 and captured to a single stereo file, or can be recorded as three separate stereo files (six channels total) for mixing together later. Resolutions up to 24-bit/96 kHz are supported, and available file types include WAV and BWF. MP3 is supported as well, and the unit can record both WAV/BWF and MP3 formats simultaneously.

The R-26’s large touch screen provides detailed level metering and convenient fingertip control over most functions, and is equipped with a high-luminance backlight for perfect visibility in any situation. Hardware controls are ergonomically organized and clearly labeled, with large input level knobs for precise adjustments and dedicated buttons for often-used functions. The R-26 also features AUTO-SENS for setting input levels automatically, as well as onboard waveform editing.

USB 2.0 allows for both data transfer and audio interface functionality with Windows and Mac-based computers. Users can connect the R-26 and use its built-in mics and external inputs as a high-quality input device for their favorite audio recording software. Loop-back recording is also supported, allowing multimedia users to combine audio from the R-26’s mics with streaming audio from the PC. The R-26 comes with Cakewalk’s SONAR X1 LE, a professional Windows-based DAW for general audio production in addition to mixing and processing R-26 recordings.

With its rear-panel mount, the R-26 can be easily installed on any standard camera tripod stand, or on a mic stand with an optional adapter. An extensive line of accessories is available to compliment the R-26, including the OP-R26CW Cover/Windscreen and the CS-10EM Binaural Microphones/Earphones to name a few.

The R-26 Portable Recorder is available to purchase for MSRP $599 USD.

Cakewalk Softube Mix Bundle now available in SONAR X1 Producer Expanded module format

Cakewalk Softube Mix Bundle

Cakewalk has announced availability of the critically acclaimed Softube Mix Bundle in SONAR X1 Producer Expanded module format.

The Softube Mix Bundle is a collection of five essential tools that give you full control over the key elements of building any mix—compression, equalization, and reverb. Now SONAR X1 Producer Expanded users can add these expertly crafted plug-ins to their arsenal of ProChannel modules.

The Softube Mix Bundle includes both ProChannel Modules for use in 32-bit & 64-bit versions of SONAR X1 Producer Expanded and VST format for use in SONAR X1 Producer, Studio, and Essential as well, as with other VST host applications.

Softube Mix Bundle features

  • TSAR-1R Reverb is based on a powerful, proprietary modern reverb algorithm. It is a vibrant, natural sounding reverb fashioned with an exceptionally accessible interface—three knobs give you fast, immediate control over a wide range of ambient spaces.
  • Passive Equalizer is based on a famous German 60s era, three-band passive console equalizer that features wide bandwidth and unsurpassed clear and open sound.
  • Active Equalizer is modern active design based on Swiss hardware from the 70s. Three bands of EQ, each with selectable gain, frequency, and bandwidth, plus 18dB/Oct high and low cut filters, providing tight and focused sound.
  • Focusing Equalizer employs Softube’s untraditional take on equalizers, with the low, mid, and high bands moving automatically and musically in relation to the high and low cut filters. Also includes filters from the Passive and Active Equalizers, all with one-knob saturation control.
  • FET Compressor is a fresh spin on a classic, complete with parallel compression, detector filters, look-ahead function, and external sidechain.

For a Limited time through January 31, 2012, all Cakewalk product customers (*SONAR X1 Producer Expanded necessary for use of ProChannel Module versions), can save 40% off the regular price and download the Softube Mix bundle for $179/€149/£125 (vat inclusive) from the Cakewalk store.
