FXpansion launches Maul multi-band distortion & tone-shaping effect

FXpansion has announced the release of its Maul multi-band distortion and tone-shaping plugin with advanced modulation.

FXpansion Maul
Maul is suited to all music requiring powerful sound-sculpting abilities – everything from subtle warming and loudness generation to shredding distortion and experimental creative effects.

Maul features 3 separate drive stages, each of which can act on a different frequency range with any of 32 distortion types. The available algorithms include DCAM-modelled germanium diode, tube and transistor-based circuits, clippers, overdrives, waveshapers of various kinds and bit-crushing devices for digital distortion flavours. Each drive stage also features control over transient-shaping, saturation circuitry and additional post-process tone filtering.

The built-in TransMod modulation system allows you to animate Maul’s parameters with the internal LFOs, envelope follower and sample & hold devices as well as with external MIDI note input. This turns Maul into an extremely flexible device capable of dynamic filter patterns, rhythmic gating effects with extra bite, loudness and harmonic excitation effects and wild, dynamic distortion that can transform your audio.

FXpansion introduces its Maul multi-band distortion and tone-shaping plug-in.

Maul features

  • 3-band creative distortion and tone-shaping device.

de la Mancha releases Strip T’s channel strip effect plugin

de la Mancha Strip T’s

de la Mancha has released Strip T’s, a channel strip effect plugin designed to be as straight-forward to use as possible but with a wide range of sonic sculpting possibilities.

It has a gate, low-cut filter, 3 band EQ, soft-knee compressor and soft/hard clipper, plus metering and a full stereo audio path.

Strip T’s brings together the knowledge and experience from developing individual effect plugins like the QB-3 EQ, sixtyfive compressor and ClipStar soft clipper. By combining the core parts of these effects, a significant amount of CPU is saved compared to running these plugins individually.

Each stage can be turned off when not needed to save further CPU, and a mono version is also available which is even more efficient.

Strip T’s features

  • Stereo Channel Strip with gate, filter, EQ, compressor and clipper stages.
  • Full stereo signal path (mono version also included).
  • Noise gate with attack & release plus indicator to show when in operation.
  • Low-cut filter to take out inaudible sub bass and free up headroom.
  • 3 band EQ, with selectable frequency ranges and EQ shapes.
  • Soft-knee, RMS Compressor with parallel compression and external sidechain.
  • Clipper offering soft and hard clipping.
  • dB meters showing current and peak levels for input and output.
  • Developed with SE 1.1, so no problems with multiple instances.
  • Stereo, Mono and non-sidechain versions included.

Strip T’s is available to purchase as a VST effect plugin for Windows for $29 USD.

Distorque releases Plusdistortion effect plugin (beta)

Distorque has released version 0.9.2 beta of Plusdistortion, a VST plugin emulation of a MXR Distortion+.

Distorque Plusdistortion

I’ve been looking into VSTs recently as a way to emulate analog stompboxes. I’m actually a bit disappointed by how few effect emulations there are, especially with free VSTs. So, I pulled out an old copy of SynthEdit (from back when the free version allowed your VSTs to have backgrounds), and I’ve made an emulation of the MXR Distortion+. It took a bit of research, especially for emulating the diode clippers. Most diode models are iterative, which would be too time-consuming for a realtime effect. After some experimenting with functions, I ended up using Vout=arctan(6*Vin)/7 to simulate the whole diode clipping setup.

Here’s the structure of the whole effect: Input attenuator -> Input HPF -> Pickup simulation LPF -> Op amp gain -> Op amp HPF -> Op amp bandwidth LPF -> Op amp clipper -> Output HPF -> Output LPF -> Output attenuator -> Diode clipping emulation -> Volume

Plusdistortion is available as a free download for Windows (VST). Feedback on this beta version is appreciated.

Xhip effect plug-ins set updated, now includes reverb, quantizer and limiter

Aciddose at PresetExchange.com has released an updated version of its collection of Xhip effect plug-ins for Windows.

these effect plugins were originally created for use with xhip.

xhip was to have embedded effects, but it was decided that external plugins would be more versatile and easier to manage when used for other tasks.

Xhip Limiter
One of the additions to the collection of effects: Limiter

Changes in Xhip effect plug-in collection

  • Three new effects: reverb, quantizer and limiter.
  • New knob graphics, caching of bitmaps (allowing better, bigger bitmaps) and some optimization.
  • The code for the vu meters has been improved – it will now catch peak values more accurately and an rms mode is available – although rms mode is not yet configurable on the gui.
  • The phaser has been improved – tuning is improved as well as other small changes. it should sound more “stable” now.
  • The compressor has had a “gain reduction” meter added.

The Xhip VST effect plug-ins for Windows are available to download separately (clipper, compressor, gate, limiter, mdelay, phaser, quantizer, reverb, ringmod, tremolo), and bundled in a pack.

de la Mancha ClipStar

de la Mancha has released ClipStar, a soft clipper effect for Windows.

ClipStar is a soft clipper effect plugin, designed to prevent peaks in a subtler way than hard clipping, increase loudness and add pleasing saturation.

Where ClipStar differs from other clippers is that it can leave the low frequencies untouched, where distortion is more evident, and allow a greater boost in gain without noticeably degrading the signal.

You can use ClipStar for peak protection, for loudness gain or for sympathetic distortion depending on your mood and the phase of the moon.

ClipStar features

  • Vintage style soft clipper with low frequency bypass and comprehensive metering.
  • In gain & Out gain adjustable to +/- 30 dB.
  • Soft clip limit can be set from 0 to -30 dB.
  • Low frequency bypass cut off from 0 to 1000 Hz.
  • Low frequency gain can be adjusted from +/- 30 dB.
  • Subtle colouring from a home-made blend of harmonics, saturation and noise.
  • Optional hard limiting on final output.
  • Metering covers stereo input, output and gain reduction. All meters show actual and peak levels.
  • Adjustable peak meter hold time.
  • Double-click knob resets.
  • Developed with SE 1.1.

ClipStar is available to purchase as a VST effect plug-in for Windows for $15 USD.

de la Mancha has also announced a special offer for ClipStar.

Get $10 off ClipStar if your purchase is $35 or more. Add ClipStar and any plugin worth $20 or more to your basket and you will get a $10 discount (available until 31 Dec 2010)
