Related: , , , , , Posted in news on Oct 01, 2013 - comment 0 comments

Toontrack has announced Metal Guitar God 2013, a guitar challenge in which your get a chance to win a brand new Jackson seven-string B7 Deluxe, a Toontrack software package and Jam Track Central voucher.

Download the modified backtrack for “Erised” by Periphery and record video and/or audio of your solo over it. From there you upload the clip to either your YouTube channel or through this app. Share your clip!

The 15 entries with the most votes go through to the judges’ round. Tips: Use the original lead (heard here, starting at approx. 02:06) as a foundation, but do your own thing. Technical, simple, fast, slow – it doesn’t matter. The point is not to copy the original, it’s to stand out. That’s what will get you votes – and ultimately make you Metal Guitar God 2013.

And of course, get you the grand prize at an estimated value of $4,900 (a brand new Jackson seven-string B7 Deluxe plus an all-metal software/sound package from Toontrack). Find complete info as well as second and third runner up prizes here. What are you waiting for?

The contest submission round ends October 20th, 2013.

Shure has announced that its 10th annual Fantastic Scholastic Recording Competition is now accepting entries from eligible universities and colleges throughout the U.S. and Canada until October 31, 2013, at 11:59 P.M. CST.

Shre Fantastic Scholastic Recording Competition

The competition is open to teams of students enrolled at a college, university, or institution of higher learning who are pursuing a bachelor’s or associate’s degree program with a focus or concentration in fields related to Audio Engineering (Music Production, Audio Recording or Engineering, Electronic Media, Sound Recording, or a similar program). Using the same high quality gear that professional musicians and recording engineers rely on, these student teams will submit original compositions, which will be judged by a panel of esteemed musicians and industry authorities.

In early November, Shure will randomly select the ten competing schools from the eligible registration pool. Each of the participating student teams will receive a standardized microphone locker from Shure that must be used to complete the recording project. The contents of the locker include two KSM313, two KSM32, two KSM44A, one KSM42, two KSM141, four SM57, two SM27-SC, one BETA® 52A, one Beta 91A, three BETA 98AMP, two BETA 181/S each with an additional Omni capsule, one SM7B, one VP88, and one A27M.

Competing teams must track and mix their original piece of music, which will be judged by a panel of industry professionals on its overall fidelity, clarity, sonic balance, and creativity in microphone selection and placement. Previous judges have included some of the industry’s top audio visionaries such as Ken Caillat, Mike Clink, Steve Churchyard, Frank Filipetti, Elliot Scheiner, and Leslie Ann Jones, among others.

The winning school will be awarded a new set of assorted Shure products, including KSM, SM, and Beta microphones, as well as SRH headphones, a prize package valued at more than $11,000. Runners-up and honorable mention school prizes will include select Shure microphones and headphones valued at $5,395 and $1,872, respectively. In addition, students on the top three recognized teams will receive prizes ranging from a KSM42 microphone, valued at $999, to a SM27-SC microphone, valued at $374, to SRH840 headphones, valued at $250.

“For nearly a decade we have been wowed by the caliber of student submissions we receive each year,” said Stephen Kohler, Senior Director of Marketing, Shure Americas. “During this milestone year, we anticipate recordings will once again impress us on all fronts—creativity, passion, mixing, and microphone techniques.”

The contestants chosen in the random drawing will be posted on Shure’s website on or around November 11, 2013, and dedicated microphone lockers will be sent in the days to follow. The winner of the Fantastic Scholastic Recording Competition, as well as the runner-up and honorable mention distinctions, will be announced on or about April 28, 2014.

Soniccouture launches User Tracks Competition

Soniccouture

Soniccouture has announced a User Tracks Competition, offering users of Soniccouture products a chance to win $500 USD store credit.

We get sent quite a lot of links to music that uses our stuff via email or Facebook or Twitter, and we like that, we really do.

But the problem is, it then gets lost – it isn’t all collected in one place. So, we’d like to start up a long term user track library. Eventually the tracks will appear somewhere on the relevant product page, but for now, we thought we’d kick things off with a small competition.

So – send us a track, any track, as long as it uses a Soniccouture instrument or sound, even the free ones, and the best 10 will be voted on by you, and the one with the most votes will win $500.

We’ve set it up so that it is done via Soundcloud, because it’s really handy. We figure most of you will have a Soundcloud account already, but if not, it’s well worth having.

The Winner will be announced October 31st 2013.

Resy announces Indie Instrument Giveaway to celebrate launch

Resy

Resy has announced it is giving away several prizes from top indie musical instrument brands to celebrate its launch.

Musical instruments and accessories make up a multi billion dollar a year industry, but most of the sales and attention go to a small number of the largest brands. Meanwhile, dedicated craftspeople and innovators produce amazing products that are often overlooked. Resy plans to shift attention to the best indie brands with its new curated boutique of the coolest musical instruments and gear.

“As an avid instrument collector, I searched the web for the best products and found that there was no outlet dedicated to highlighting the best in independent musical product brands, so I decided to create it,” says founder and CEO Brett Rakestraw. “There are three product categories that we focus on at Resy: innovative, hand crafted, and well designed. Every product we sell has to fit into at least one.”

Resy will highlight these amazing products through flash sales with one new product a week at a discounted price. Sales will run for two weeks and a limited number of items will be made available during the sale duration. Once they sell out, the product will no longer be available at the sale price.

To celebrate the launch, Resy has announced a prize giveaway with three unique prizes. The three prizes represent the diversity and quality of products to be sold in future sales.

The Bohemian Guitars “BoHo” oil can guitar is a fully functioning electric guitar built with a custom oil can for its body. Bohemian Guitars successfully funded this project on Kickstarter before bringing it to market. The Air Logic Percussion bass drum pedal is a reinvention of the traditional bass drum pedal using a compressed air cylinder instead of springs. This allows for more player control and more speed with the pedal. The Sugar Bytes WOW2 Filterbox plugin is a very “now” audio filter, full of features for creating sophisticated electronic music and for endless experimentation. Its design is top notch and it’s available on Mac and PC.

The giveaway ends October 28th, 2013, 11:59pm Eastern Standard Time.
