energyXT in Linux

Some interesting things I found recently:

# Free, Native Linux Plug-ins, and How to Use Them in energyXT for Linux

Peter Kirn writes:

It’s simply stunning some of the terrific instrument and effect plug-ins available that are now free and open source – yes, free as in freedom, not just freeware. I had commented in the past something along the lines of, “boy, wouldn’t it be great if this now meant, say, a Linux port?” and then went on the business of my daily life, which tends not to include re-compiling plug-ins. But now, the folks of JUCETICE have been busy doing just that, serving up delicious instrument and effect goodness, running native on Linux.

# Flute samples

Cyberworm posts some free acoustic flute loops, shots and fx's. Thanks to Decado/Fluter for playing. 80 samples in all.
Samples are in wav format, 24 bit, 44100 hz, stereo, 46 mb.

mechomaniac Arduino noise box synth

# Arduino noise box synth – an Arduino based step sequencer, synthesizer and sound effects box.

mechomaniac writes:

It was constructed a year ago as a third birthday present, and has recently come back to me for some 'refurbishment' – fresh batteries and some glue to fix LEDs that have been pushed into the box. Not too bad after a year with a small child!

# Massive YM2413 Sample Pack (245 Samples)

Sebastian Tomczak recorded a sample pack from a YM2413 chip.

The sample pack consists on 245 samples. These are:

  • 5 drum sounds
  • 16 sounds per instrument, across 15 preset instruments

In the case of all of the pitched sounds, the samples include every C and G pitch from C-2 to G6 (16 in total). Every even-numbered file is a G. Every odd-numbered file is a C. Samples are available in wav and mp3.

Casper Electronics Echo Bender

It’s capable of creating smooth, clean echos as well as delving deep into screeching, noisy realms seldom heard from a traditional echo pedal.

Echo Bender V2 features

  • Coarse pitch

  • Decay
  • Wet volume
  • Dry volume

rhythm-lab.com Mo'Verb

Rhythm Lab has released version 1.04 of Mo’Verb, a free reverb effect plug-in for Windows PC.

Mo’Verb is a reverberator, based on original algorithms, combining simulation of spring and digital reverbs. In our plug-in we did our best to provide basis for creating of wide spectrum of timbres, make smooth and warm sound, handy and intuitive interface for making the required sound easy and fast. While making our reverb algorithm we used specially created program for the search of inner parameters to make the sound of the reverb smooth and clear.

Changes in Mo’Verb v1.04

  • FPU, SSE2, SSE3 auto-detect (no need to use previous versions for old CPUs).
  • Minor bug fixes.

Mo’Verb is available as a freeware VST effect plug-in for Windows PC.

rhythm-lab Twin Delay

rhythm-lab has released Twin Delay, a VST plugin designed for emulation of digital and analogue delay effects.

The program is not an exact copy of already existing hardware-based equipment, nevertheless it can be used for producing a majority of popular effects, as well as some modulation and ‘unusual’ effects, for instance Flanger, Metallizer.

Special attention have been given to analogue delay algorithms, that make it possible to create beautiful and original sounds, frequently used in such genres as IDM, Experimental, Breaks and especially Dub, as well as genres that use Dub elements: Dub techno, Dubstep, Dubwise and so on.

Twin Delay features

  • Digital algorithm and 3 original tape algorithms.
  • Channel Delay.
  • 3 types of sync: auto, ms and manual bpm.
  • Cross feedback function for ping-pong delay algorithms.
  • Mono/stereo smooth function.
  • HP and LP filters with tube drive emulation.
  • Programmed with Delphi and Assembler.
  • 65+ presets.

Review: Prime Loops Minimal & Tech House Drums

Prime Loops Minimal & Tech House Drums

Prime Loops recently released Minimal & Tech House Drums, a collection of over 1,000 drum sounds.

From the product page:

Prime Loops are extremely proud to present Minimal & Tech House Drums which contains 1,000 skilfully hand-crafted drums painstakingly designed over a period of 6 months – from scratch, using over 20 high-grade analogue synths. These include: Access Virus B/TI, Korg Prophecy, Jomox Airbase99, Polivox Synthesizer, Juno-106 and many others. The drums have been mastered using TL Audio Ivory and enhanced using a host of the finest studio hardware processors.

The collection includes:

  • 200+ Synthesised Claps & Snares
  • 200+ Crystal Clear Cymbals & Hi-Hats
  • 300+ Synthetic FX & nu-era Analogue Percussion
  • 100+ Sonically enhanced Kicks
  • 100+ Pristine Snares
  • Toms, Shakers and lots more.

Minimal & Tech House Drums is available for download in a variety of formats for £12.95 GBP (~19 USD, 15 EUR).

So what do I think?

I always tell myself that I don’t need more electronic drum sounds (and it’s the truth isn’t it), but since Prime Loops was kind enough to send me a copy of Minimal & Tech House Drums I now have yet another 1,000 samples in my sample library. How will I ever be able to use them all? Well, probably not.

Anwyay, this *is* a great collection of drum sounds. Perhaps not so surprising since the guy behind these samples is none other than Cyberworm. Doesn’t ring a bell? Make sure to check his website Rhythm-lab.com, where he has been offering quality free samples since 2007 (the Vermona DRM1 MKIII samples he released a few weeks ago are top notch).

At just under $20 this library is a regular steal. Certainly when you do need more electronic drum sounds, but perhaps also when you don’t. You can download some free demo sounds from the Minimal Tech & House Drums here (zip).
