u-he has launched the second part in a series of tutorial videos by Dan Worrall on the ACE virtual modular synthesizer instrument for Windows and Mac.

ACE belongs to a new generation of synthesizers developed with the latest, fastest computers in mind. ACE offers classic modular synthesis and more at a fraction of the cost of dedicated hardware. But like its hardware forebears, you can patch any output into any input: the number of different ways to connect modules together is practically infinite. Needless to say, you will never run out of cables!

ACE for Windows and Mac (VST/AU) is available to purchase for 69 EUR.

Voltage-Controlled Sample Collection Vol. 1

Voltage Controlled Sample Collection Vol 1

The Voltage-Controlled Sample Collection Vol. 1 is a free collection of samples by Dan Worrall.

If you didn’t know, Voltage-Controlled offers a selection of royalty free samples and loops. Every now and then I’ll upload a new sample pack to the site, the samples are completely free to download and you can use them in your own productions or music without having to worry about copyright or anything like that.

A few weeks ago my external hard drive decided that it was going to die on me, this resulted in me losing backups of older sample packs and music. So to make sure that this wouldn’t happen again I’ve gone through the site and re-downloaded the samples.

While I was re-building my backup folder I thought it would be a cool idea to upload the whole thing to the site and give you lot the option to download all of the Voltage Controlled samples at once. So that’s exactly what I did, I compressed the samples down into a .RAR file and uploaded them.

The Voltage-Controlled Sample Collection Vol. 1 features over 1GB of samples, including, drum loops, one shots, synth hits, synth waveforms, found sound and more.

The royalty free sample library is available to download at no cost.

Platinumears FL4TT3RY 2, free bus compressor effect gets updated

Platinumears FL4TT3RY 2

Platinumears has released version 2 of FL4TT3RY, a freeware bus compressor effect plug-in for Windows.

This is a gentle squashy compressor intended for use on busses, though it also works well on channels. It has a very soft knee, with a ratio that gradually increases to hard limiting, and a choice between RMS based level detection (with a window size that depends on the attack time) or a brand new peak sensing algorithm.

This unit is inspired by a particular bit of hardware that I know quite well. Its not “modelled” however: I came up with the algorithm first, thought it sounded similar, so then skinned the plug to resemble the hardware. It is definitely not a proper model, so I’m not going to name the unit in question.

Changes in FL4TT3RY 2

  • Slightly gentler transfer curve brings it (subjectively) closer to the hardware that inspired it.
  • Tweaked attack smoothing to make it a little more aggressive with the fastest settings.
  • Tweaked release smoothing to make it pump less with the fastest settings.
  • New peak sensing mode.
  • External sidechain inputs.
  • Left click the meter to toggle the range between 6, 12 or 18dB.
  • Right click the meter to switch between Gain Reduction metering, or Gain change metering (which includes make-up gain).

FL4TT3RY 2 for Windows (VST) is available to download at no cost. Donations are appreciated.
