Drumdrops has announced the Ludwig Super Classic Kit, a new drum sample library.

Drumdrops Ludwig Super Classic Kit

Most people will know of the reputation of Ludwig drums, famously used by Ringo Starr from a little known 60s Liverpudlian band, and later by John Bonham of Led Zeppelin. They sound fantastic, warm and responsive with a lovely dark tone from the thin 3 ply mahogany, poplar and mahogany shells with maple reinforcing hoops. Made before music became really amplified and loud, these drums were designed to sound good rather than generate loads of volume and as such they are wonderfully full and tonal, especially when recorded and miked up. Although obviously a 1960s kit, drummers continued to use this model though the 70s, and do so to this very day in fact… They just record so well.

The particular kit we used is one from session drummer Tim Weller’s collection and is a blue oyster pearl finish. The drums are shallower than many modern drums which helps focus their sound and control their decay.

For this kit we went for a dry controlled sound and used Miloco’s The Square in London. The kit was close mic’d. The Kit was recorded by Drumdrops engineer Ben Thackeray and mixed by Grammy award winning, ex Abbey Road engineer Guy Massey.

The Ludwig Super Classic Kit is available in 5 different formats. The Multi-Velocity Pack, Single Hits Pack, Drum Replacement Pack and All Samples Pack are out now. The Kontakt 5 pack with the Drumdrops Kontakt instrument will be released on the 28th of August 2014 between 4 pm and 4.30 pm GMT.

The first 20 customers will get the Kontakt pack free. The next 50 can purchase it for £15 GBP, the next 50 for £25 GBP, the next 50 for £30 GBP and then it will return to £40 GBP.

Drumdrops releases Yamaha Hybrid Kit for Kontakt 5

Drumdrops has announced the release of Yamaha Hybrid Kit Kontakt 5, a multi-sampled drum kit for Native Instruments Kontakt.

Drumdrops Yamaha Hybrid Kit for Kontakt

The kit was built to be given away in a Computer Music Magazine Recording Special magazinr, however customers loved it so much that we built a Kontakt pack, which is on sale at a great introductory price so customers can check out exactly how Drumdrops Kontakt kits sound and work with our interface.

The kit is owned by producer Ben Hillier (Depeche Mode, Nadine Shah, Graham Coxon) and resides in Miloco’s Pool Studio in London. The kit has been used by loads of artists in the studio and is a current favourite of producer Stephen Street. The drums used to make up this kit have come from a combination of Yamaha kits but together they make a great studio recording kit. The kit works well at different tuning pitches, but its big size and its Ludwig 402 snare makes it suitable for deeper rock orientated tracks or ballads or even pop tracks. Combined with the Drumdrops Kontakt interface you can change the sound of the kit to suit almost any drum track.

The kit comprises a large 24″ bass drum, a wonderfully deep 18″ floor tom and a 14″ rack tom. The snare is a Ludwig 402 14″ x 6.5″. The cymbals used were Zildjian Dark 13″ Hi-Hats, a Zildjian Constantinople 22″ Medium Ride and two Zildjian Crashes – an 18″ Constantinople Medium Light Crash and a huge 20″ Zildjian Oriental Crash Of Doom.

The kit was recorded by resident Drumdrops engineer Ben Thackeray and mixed by grammy winning mix engineer Matt Lawrence. The drummer was Adam Falkner, a busy UK session drummer and musical director. Recent highlights include touring and recording with Dido, Babyshambles, Amy Macdonald, and One Eskimo.

Yamaha Hybrid Kit features

  • Groove Player – There are 704 MIDI Grooves included in the MIDI Groove Player that are played by drummers Jason Bowld and Jonathan Atkinson.
  • Step Sequencer – The sequencer has eight channels allowing any eight of the articulations of the Mapex Kit to be selected and played. The sequencer contains 32 steps for each channel.
  • Groove Slicer – The Groove Slicer cuts each MIDI groove into thirty-two sections. These sections can then be played back in a different order to the original depending on what which of the three modes are selected.
  • Mic Blend – Here you can control the mix on the microphones used for each channel. You can vary the balance of the close microphone with the overheads and room microphones.
  • An 8 channel mixer – Each channel comes with a Mute, Solo, Phase Reverse and 2 Aux sends.
  • Convolution Reverbs – 4 studio Impulse responses and many classic reverbs and effects are included.
  • Velocity Curves – The ability to change the velocity curve and tuning of each drum.
  • Randomisation – Randomise the tuning, velocity, EQ and timing for added realism.
  • Round Robin Samples – Multiple Round Robins included for extra authenticity.
  • Channel Effects – 4 band EQ and Transient Master included on each channel.
  • Stereo Effects – A buss compressor and Tape saturator on the mix buss.
  • DAW Compatability – Ability to route each channel to your DAW.
  • Mix Presets – Multiple Mix presets included mixed by a variety of engineers, musicians and producers.
  • Two versions – A full version and lite version for use on laptops.
  • MIDI Compatability – Multiple MIDI maps included with full compatibility with the Roland TD-12, TD-20 and TD-30 V-drums and the Yamaha DTX-900.

The Yamaha Hybrid Kit Kontakt Pack is now available from Drumdrops. The first 250 customers can get the Pack for free, the next 250 customers will be charged £2 GBP, the next 500 customers will be charged £5 GBP and then the pack will be only £10 GBP for all other users.

Drumdrops releases Mapex Heavy Rock Kit

Drumdrops has announced the release of the Mapex Heavy Rock Kit, a sample library featuring the sounds of the Mapex Saturn drum kit of Jason Bowld.

Drumdrops Mapex Heavy Rock Kit

This Mapex Heavy Rock Kit was used on the Drumdrops multi-track album ‘Heavy Rock Drops’. This kit was recorded at the now shut down Garden Studios in Shoreditch, London. The kit is available to purchase in five different packs and is a must for all those who love rock drum kits.

This kit, which was a Mapex Saturn Kit comes with three Mapex Snares including a much sought after Black Panther Hammered Series snare in Phosphor Bronze. The kit also comes with three crash cymbals, a china crash and a ride cymbal. It has been recorded with 16 velocity levels and multiple articulations. This Mapex Saturn kit is owned by Jason Bowld (Killing Joke, Bullet For My Valentine) who uses it for all his recording sessions with some of the UKs leading rock producers. These kits are renowned as being one of the best rock kits.

The Garden Studios (R.I.P. 1978-2012) was responsible for recording many great UK rock bands from Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Cure, The The and The Arctic Monkeys amongst others. It had a unique recording room which defied all acoustics but just sounded great on drums. We were lucky enough to record this kit here shortly before it closed its doors for the last time. Martyn ‘Ginge’ Ford (Bullet For My Valentine, Trivium, Slipknot) was responsible for recording the kit through the vintage Neve 8026 console that resided at the studio.

The sample library is available for Kontakt (£52 GBP), as a multi-velocity pack (£15 GBP), single hits pack (£7.50 GBP), drum replacement pack (£15 GBP), and all sample pack (£30 GBP).
