Wavesfactory releases Marxophone for Kontakt

Wavesfactory Marxophone

Wavesfactory has announced Marxophone, a zither sound library for Native Instruments Kontakt.

The Marxophone is a fretless zither that has four sets of chord strings to be strummed with the left hand and two octaves of double melody strings, which are struck by metal hammers activated by the right hand.

The hammers are mounted on spring steel and produce a mandolin-like sound from repeated bouncing on the strings, hence the name mandolin-guitar-zither sometimes applied to the Marxophone. The sound of the Marxophone is also reminiscent of the various types of hammered dulcimer in music traditions world-wide.

Marxophone features

  • Played with spring steels, pick and fingers.
  • All major and minor chords sampled.
  • 4 velocity layers.
  • 4 round robin (repetitions).

Cinesamples releases CineBells for Kontakt

Cinesamples has announced CineBells, a sound library for Native Instruments Kontakt.

Cinesamples Cinebells

Here we present a focused, tidy collection of intimately-recorded, overdub ready, pitched happiness. A sizable 10GB (at compressed NI NCW) collection of pitched bells, dulcimers and keyboards specifically designed to construct tonal groove elements. For years we’ve been subjected to typical cinematic grooves composed of various small percussive elements; sticks, logs, shakers, claves, tambourines, finger cymbals, and other unpitched toys – yet there was an obvious lack of pitched counterparts.

Partially inspired by the tasty tonal percussion overdub tracks on Radiohead’s “No Surprises” and Green Day’s “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” we set out to produce a library which could easily camouflage itself in any track of any genre. Aside from applying the production techniques of modern sampling, we had to take special care taming these incredibly verbal instruments; especially the mallet keyboards as they have the power to drown out an entire orchestra in a hall setting.

Using a combination of instrument treatments, mellow mallets, small pencil condensers and elite Class-A outboard gear (Lexicon PCM 91, Avalon 2055 EQ, Waves L2 Hardware Limiter, Manley Variable Mu), we were able to capture an incredibly usable mix. You will hear a tremendously clean signal featuring perfectly smooth transients, transparent highs, warm mids and tastefully rolled-off lows, with just enough ambience to prevent sterility. We’ve also included true mono; a single microphone (not a faked, stereo fold down) as it would be used in 90% of these types of situations in the studio. We have captured an authentic and familiar sound – that your client will hopefully feel rather than notice outright when they hear your cues.

CineBells features

  • 12 patches of unique and useful instruments.
  • 2 Mix Options.
  • High-Quality Signal Chain:
    • Lexicon PCM 91
    • Avalon 2055 EQ
    • Waves L2 Hardware Limiter
    • Manley Variable Mu
  • 9.97 GB – NCW Compressed.
  • Multiple Dynamic Layers, Round Robin Articulations.
  • Requires Full Version of Kontakt 4.2.3 or higher.
  • Produced by Mike Barry, Mike Patti, and Dan Negovan; Programmed and Scripted by Blake Robinson; engineered by Brian Dixon.

CineBells is available to purchase for the introductory price of $99 USD (regular $129 USD).

Rock Hardburns releases Dulcimator 2

Rock Hardburns Dulcimator 2

Rock Hardburns has released Dulcimator 2, a free hammered dulcimer emulation for Windows.

It’s a delay line type synth that has been specifically structured to emulate the hammered dulcimer, but it does OK with few other simpler string instruments. It’s based around a buffer that is seeded with an impulse, and then filtered once every period.

Dulcimator 2 features

  • Buffer input waveforms RND (noise), SQR and SAW.
  • Prefilter of buffer, can be mapped to velocity.
  • Damp for cut off frequency of the playback filter, damping factor can be adjusted based on the note pitch (Key).
  • 3 peak/notch filters: 100Hz, 200Hz and 300Hz, useful for simulating body resonance.
  • Detune for increasing the distance between two auxiliary playback pointers. This simulates having three strings instead of one, which is important for that sparkly dulcimer sound.
  • Envelope, chorus and volume controls.

Dulcimator 2 is available to download as a freeware VST instrument for Windows PC.
