Expert Sleepers updates Crossfade Loop Synth to v3.2.0

Expert Sleepers Crossfade Loop Synth

Expert Sleepers has announced an update for the Crossfade Loop Synth plugins for Windows and Mac.

From version 3, Crossfade Loop Synth is actually two plug-ins: Crossfade Loop Synth and Crossfade Loop Synth Effect. The effect version takes the power of Crossfade Loop Synth and turns it into a live sampler, a looper and a very unusual and powerful delay effect.

Changes in Crossfade Loop Synth v3.2.0

  • The Mac OS X AU & VST versions now support 64 bit operation.
  • The timing of note playback is much improved in the synth versions of the plug-in (now sample accurate).
  • Fixes a minor bug which would cause the plug-in to attempt to load an empty filename when loading a song in Plogue Bidule.

Crossfade Loop Synth for Windows and Mac (VST/AU) is available to purchase for $49 USD excl. VAT (if applicable).

Expert Sleepers announces ES-4 S/PDIF/ CV interface

Related: , , , , , Posted in news on Jun 29, 2011 - comment 0 comments

Expert Sleepers has announced the ES-4, a Eurorack format module which converts a standard S/PDIF input to five channels of control voltage.

Expert Sleepers ES-4

Two of the five channels are calibrated to provide over 5 octaves of 1V/octave pitch CV. The remaining three channels are general purpose outputs (for use as e.g. gates, envelopes, LFOs) and each have a nominal range of 0-10V or ±5V (user selectable).

Since S/PDIF is a stereo-only format, the encoding of the five channels on to two is handled by software to be provided as part of Expert Sleepers Silent Way.

The ES-4 will connect to any audio device using the S/PDIF standard. This includes the digital audio output provided as standard on all recent Macs.

The ES-4 Gate Expander is a Eurorack module which works in tandem with the ES-4 to offer 8 on/off outputs for use as gates, triggers, clocks etc.

Up to five ES-4 Gate Expanders can be attached to one ES-4 – one per ES-4 channel. (The 8 outputs of the Gate Expander reflect the 8 bits of CV information passed to the ES-4′s DACs.) Therefore you can combine the modules to create a system with up to 40 independent gate outputs – all driven from a single S/PDIF connection.

ES-4 prelimiary specifications

  • Panel width: 8HP.
  • Module depth: 51mm.
  • Digital input: coaxial S/PDIF.
  • Digital output: coaxial S/PDIF.
  • Analogue outputs: 5x 3.5mm jacks, DC-coupled.
  • Output voltages
    • Channels 1-2: 0-5.3V (when trimmed for 1V/octave response).
    • Channels 3-5: 0-10V or ±5V (jumper selectable per channel).
  • D/A conversion: 8 bit, using high precision Analog Devices DACs.
  • Indicators: LED for S/PDIF sync lock; 2 LEDs per channel on channels 3-5 indicate output voltage (+ve/-ve).
  • Expansion
    • 5 headers for connecting ES-4 Gate Expander modules (see below).
    • Digital audio I/O header (I2S format) for future expansion.

ES-4 Gate Expander preliminary specifications

  • Panel width: 4HP.
  • Module depth: 24mm.
  • Analogue outputs: 8x 3.5mm jacks, DC-coupled.
  • Output voltages: 0V/5V or 0V/12V, selectable via jumper in groups independently for channels 1-4 and 5-8.
  • Indicators: LED per channel.

The ES-4 modules are scheduled for release August 2011. Pricing TBA.

The Electronic Garden releases Joystick Journeys – The VCS3 Collection

The Electronic Garden Joystick Journeys - The VCS3 Collection

The Electronic Garden has released Joystick Journeys – The VCS3 Collection, a sample library featuring sounds from the EMS VCS3.

This particular collection of samples was created in order to capture the VCS3 in all its chaotic (and sometimes noisy) glory. This isn’t your run-of-the-mill synth collection. Yes, there are a number of chromatically “in-tune” patches, multi-sampled up the keys.

Many of these were created with the help of Expert Sleepers’ awesome Silent Way MIDI-to-CV conversion software (http://www.expert-sleepers.co.uk/), but many of them were made by painstakingly adjusting the VCS3′s “Scale” knobs. Why? Because that’s the way my heroes did it way back in the 1970s. It means that sometimes the oscillators surge and beat against one another in interesting ways, especially when the matrix is full of pins!

Joystick Journeys – The VCS3 Collection features

  • Over 850 16/44.1 kHz and 24-bit/44.1 kHz .wav format samples.
  • Over 70 patches for Kontakt.
  • 101 REX files, tempos 100, 110 and 120 BPM.

Joystick Journeys – The VCS3 Collection is available to purchase for $20 USD.

Expert Sleepers ES-3 Lightpipe/CV Interface now shipping

Expert Sleepers ES-3

Expert Sleeping has announced it is now shipping the ES-3, a lightpipe/CV interface.

The ES-3 is a Eurorack format module which converts eight channels of ADAT Lightpipe input to DC coupled outputs on 3.5mm jacks, for the ultimate convenience in connection of a DAW directly to analogue synthesizers.

The outputs can be used as control voltages (CVs), for example with software such as Expert Sleepers Silent Way, and can also be used as audio outputs at high, modular synth-compatible levels.

With the ES-3, a single optical cable is all that is need to bring direct CV control from your DAW right into the heart of a modular system.

The ES-3 is now available direct from Expert Sleepers for £186 GBP (including VAT and delivery), and soon from various international distributors.

Expert Sleepers updates Silent Way to v1.6.5, now includes SMUX

Related: , , , , , , Posted in news on Feb 07, 2011 - comment 2 comments

Expert Sleepers has released version 1.6.5 of Silent Way, adding Silent Way SMUX to the suite of plug-ins designed for use with analogue synthesisers.

Expert Sleepers SMUX

Silent Way SMUX provides a hack to workaround the reduction in channel count over ADAT connections when running the audio system at 88.1/96kHz.

When using an audio interface to produce your CVs that is connected via ADAT (for example, the Expert Sleepers ES-3 Lightpipe/CV Interface), and when the audio system is being run at a ‘double speed’ rate (typically 96kHz), the number of audio channels that can be sent down the ADAT connection is reduced from the usual 8 down to 4. The 4 double-speed channels are multiplexed onto the 8 ADAT channels – this system is usually referred to as ‘S/MUX’, or sample multiplexing.

The Silent Way SMUX plug-in gets around this reduction in channel count by providing a complementary multiplexing scheme, which takes 4 channels of CVs and combines them onto 2 channels of the double-speed audio stream. When the ADAT output is then decoded by a normal-speed interface (such as the ES-3 mentioned above), the channels are demultiplexed, and so you get your 4 channels of CV back again.

Silent Way for Windows and Mac (VST/AU) is available to purchase for $49 USD (plus VAT if applicable).
