In this version DINsync and MIDI clock generation has been largely rewritten, offering much improved behaviour.

Also, an offset control has been added to each, to allow the timing to be brought forward or pushed back by a small amount, to compensate for any timing delays in the hardware being synced.

Expert Sleepers updates Silent Way to v1.6.11

Related: , , , , , , Posted in news on Oct 06, 2011 - comment 0 comments

Expert Sleepers has updated Silent Way, a suite of plug-ins designed for use with analogue synthesisers, and especially as part of a modular analogue synthesiser system.

The plug-ins produce no sound themselves, nor do they process sound – rather, they generate signals to be used as control voltages (CVs), which can be patched into the control inputs of oscillators, filters, VCAs etc. of an analogue system. Also, with the addition of the CV Input plug-in, it is possible to bring CVs from the synth into the computer, for recording or processing.

Changes in Silent Way v1.6.11

  • The AU Generator variants of the Silent Way DC, Silent Way CV Input, Silent Way LFO and Silent Way Step LFO plug-ins have been replaced by AU Instrument variants, so as to be compatible with AU validation under OS X Lion.
  • Added a ‘Reset By Note’ option to Silent Way LFO, allowing the LFO to be reset by incoming MIDI note-on messages.
  • Added visual feedback of the LFO’s position in its cycle to Silent Way LFO.
  • Added a ‘Create ES-4 Calibration’ button to Silent Way Quantizer, removing the need to load a suitable calibration file when using the Quantizer with the ES-4 module.
  • Made a slight adjustment to the ES-4 Controller’s input processing to match that in the Silent Way Voice Controller and Silent Way Quantizer.

Silent Way is available to purchase for $49 USD excl. VAT.

Expert Sleepers releases ES-4 S/PDIF / CV Interface and ES-4 Gate Expander

Expert Sleepers ES-4

Expert Sleepers has announced two new additions to their range of Eurorack format synth modules, the ES-4 S/PDIF / CV Interface and the ES-4 Gate Expander.

The ES-4 converts a standard S/PDIF input into five channels of control voltage.

Two of the five channels are calibrated to provide over 5 octaves of 1V/octave pitch CV. In conjunction with the supplied software, this gives the ES-4 the functionality of a traditional two channel MIDI/CV converter, but with sample accurate timing, something USB-based interfaces can only dream of.

The remaining three channels are general purpose outputs (for use as e.g. gates, envelopes, LFOs) and each have a nominal range of 0-10V or ±5V (user selectable).

The ES-4 will connect to any audio device using the S/PDIF standard. This includes the digital audio output provided as standard on all recent Macs.

Expert Sleepers ES-4 Gate Expander

The ES-4 Gate Expander is a Eurorack module which works in tandem with the ES-4 to offer 8 on/off outputs for use as gates, triggers, clocks etc.

Up to five ES-4 Gate Expanders can be attached to one ES-4 – one per ES-4 channel. (The 8 outputs of the Gate Expander reflect the 8 bits of CV information passed to the ES-4′s DACs.)

Therefore you can combine the modules to create a system with up to 40 independent gate outputs – all driven from a single S/PDIF connection.

The ES-4 Software also provides the ability to use each Gate Expander output as a MIDI port. This allows the user to generate sample accurate, jitter-free MIDI, without any of the timing problems that plague traditional MIDI interfaces (famously described by Vince Clarke of Erasure).

The ES-4 is available to purchase for MSRP £151 GBP; The ES-4 Gate Expander is £64 GPB. Prices excl. VAT.

Expert Sleepers updates Crossfade Loop Synth to v3.2.0

Expert Sleepers Crossfade Loop Synth

Expert Sleepers has announced an update for the Crossfade Loop Synth plugins for Windows and Mac.

From version 3, Crossfade Loop Synth is actually two plug-ins: Crossfade Loop Synth and Crossfade Loop Synth Effect. The effect version takes the power of Crossfade Loop Synth and turns it into a live sampler, a looper and a very unusual and powerful delay effect.

Changes in Crossfade Loop Synth v3.2.0

  • The Mac OS X AU & VST versions now support 64 bit operation.
  • The timing of note playback is much improved in the synth versions of the plug-in (now sample accurate).
  • Fixes a minor bug which would cause the plug-in to attempt to load an empty filename when loading a song in Plogue Bidule.

Crossfade Loop Synth for Windows and Mac (VST/AU) is available to purchase for $49 USD excl. VAT (if applicable).

Expert Sleepers announces ES-4 S/PDIF/ CV interface

Related: , , , , , Posted in news on Jun 29, 2011 - comment 0 comments

Expert Sleepers has announced the ES-4, a Eurorack format module which converts a standard S/PDIF input to five channels of control voltage.

Expert Sleepers ES-4

Two of the five channels are calibrated to provide over 5 octaves of 1V/octave pitch CV. The remaining three channels are general purpose outputs (for use as e.g. gates, envelopes, LFOs) and each have a nominal range of 0-10V or ±5V (user selectable).

Since S/PDIF is a stereo-only format, the encoding of the five channels on to two is handled by software to be provided as part of Expert Sleepers Silent Way.

The ES-4 will connect to any audio device using the S/PDIF standard. This includes the digital audio output provided as standard on all recent Macs.

(The 8 outputs of the Gate Expander reflect the 8 bits of CV information passed to the ES-4′s DACs.) Therefore you can combine the modules to create a system with up to 40 independent gate outputs – all driven from a single S/PDIF connection.

The Electronic Garden releases Joystick Journeys – The VCS3 Collection

The Electronic Garden Joystick Journeys - The VCS3 Collection

The Electronic Garden has released Joystick Journeys – The VCS3 Collection, a sample library featuring sounds from the EMS VCS3.

This particular collection of samples was created in order to capture the VCS3 in all its chaotic (and sometimes noisy) glory. This isn’t your run-of-the-mill synth collection. Yes, there are a number of chromatically “in-tune” patches, multi-sampled up the keys.

Many of these were created with the help of Expert Sleepers’ awesome Silent Way MIDI-to-CV conversion software (http://www.expert-sleepers.co.uk/), but many of them were made by painstakingly adjusting the VCS3′s “Scale” knobs. Why? Because that’s the way my heroes did it way back in the 1970s. It means that sometimes the oscillators surge and beat against one another in interesting ways, especially when the matrix is full of pins!

Joystick Journeys – The VCS3 Collection features

  • Over 850 16/44.1 kHz and 24-bit/44.1 kHz .wav format samples.
  • Over 70 patches for Kontakt.
  • 101 REX files, tempos 100, 110 and 120 BPM.

Joystick Journeys – The VCS3 Collection is available to purchase for $20 USD.

Expert Sleepers ES-3

Expert Sleeping has announced it is now shipping the ES-3, a lightpipe/CV interface.

The ES-3 is a Eurorack format module which converts eight channels of ADAT Lightpipe input to DC coupled outputs on 3.5mm jacks, for the ultimate convenience in connection of a DAW directly to analogue synthesizers.

The outputs can be used as control voltages (CVs), for example with software such as Expert Sleepers Silent Way, and can also be used as audio outputs at high, modular synth-compatible levels.

With the ES-3, a single optical cable is all that is need to bring direct CV control from your DAW right into the heart of a modular system.

The ES-3 is now available direct from Expert Sleepers for £186 GBP (including VAT and delivery), and soon from various international distributors.
