Universal Audio announces new Analog Classics plug-in bundles

Universal Audio has announced new Analog Classics plug-in bundles for its award-winning Apollo interfaces and UAD-2 DSP Accelerator cards.

Universal Audio has released Fairchild Tube Limiter Collection for the UAD platform and Apollo audio interfaces.

For a half-century, the Fairchild 670 and 660 tube limiters have defined many of popular music’s most revered vocal and drum sounds, from Pink Floyd and the Beatles to classic Motown singles. Now, Universal Audio has fully captured Fairchild’s revered tube character with the Fairchild Tube Limiter Plug-In Collection for the UAD Powered Plug-Ins platform and Apollo Audio Interfaces.

In 2004, Universal Audio released the Fairchild 670 Legacy plug-in, which was quickly heralded as the best Fairchild 670 emulation available. Today, UA’s team of DSP experts have improved the original time constants and gain reduction curves while modeling — for the first time ever — the complete tube-powered amplifier and transformer sections of their hardware counterparts. Far beyond other Fairchild emulations, only the new UAD Fairchild Limiter Collection is based on an accurate circuit model of Ocean Way’s “golden-reference” units.

Liveschool free Ableton Live drum racks

Liveschool has released a number of free drum rack packs for Ableton Live.

Fairchild 808
  • Fairchild 808 — The samples were recorded by manager of Studios 301 and Ableton Certified Trainer Anthony Garvin as we were preparing for our next focus course on Mixing and Mastering. They were recorded from an original TR-808 through one of 301′s custom built DI boxes, and then patched through the Fairchild 670 via the SSL K-Series console, finally being captured into Ableton Live by an Apogee Rosetta 200 ADC. Multiple passes of some of the samples where made to include variations on each element, such as a short punchy kick, and the long-decay sub type kick.
Vermona DRM1 MKIII
  • Vermona DRM1 MKIII — Using the per-sound outputs on the Vermona, each sample was passed through a series of outboard gear suited to that sound. As with our 808 Drum Rack, some these samples were recorded via Studios 301′s very rare (and very valuable) Fairchild 670 compressor. Going beyond the Fairchild this time, we took advantage of more of 301′s outboard gear, and customised the signal chain for each new sound.
Korg Volca Beats
  • Korg Volca Beats — Over in Studio 2 at Studios 301, the samples were recorded direct from the Korg Volca Beats into an API 512c Lunchbox pre-amp, then through a channel of the SSL 9000k console for some slight compression and EQ, before being captured back in to Ableton Live with a Apogee Rossetta 200 ADC. It might be a consumer priced drum machine, but it was amongst some giants (with giant price tags) over at 301. It was pretty surreal hearing the Volca’s meaty analog kick booming through the Genelec 1039A main monitors in Studio 2.

OverTone DSP Vintage Mastering Bundle

OverTone DSP announced the release of the Vintage Mastering Bundle, comprising the FC70 Fairchild 670 Limiter and PTC-2A Vintage Pultec EQ plug-ins for Windows and Mac OS X.

The PTC-2A is a superb emulation of the legendary Pultec EQP-1A, one of the most sought-after vintage equalizers. Separate LF Boost and Attenuate controls provide the signature Pultec sounds, while, as in the original hardware, a transformer-coupled tube amplifier stage further enhances the vintage qualities. Innovative filter technology provides a genuine analogue response without requiring conventional CPU-intensive techniques.

The FC70 emulates the legendary smooth, effortless dynamic control and uniquely musical character of the classic Fairchild 670 limiter. Modelled using measured data and schematics from genuine hardware, the FC70 uses a fully balanced design, combined with innovative delay-free feedback topology to emulate the original circuitry. The sidechain includes the fast attack and program dependent release settings of the original, combined with Lateral / Vertical, Independent and Linked stereo channel modes.

Slate Digital intros Virtual Buss Compressors—Three analog modeled dynamic processors

Slate Digital has announced Virtual Buss Compressors, a new plugin in Slate Digital’s Virtual Analog series.

VIRTUAL BUSS COMPRESSORS offer three unique sounding, 100% analog modeled dynamic processors that are ideal for program material.

Every nuance of real analog compressors has been modeled including the exact nonlinear characteristics of their transformers, tubes, vcas, amplifiers, phase distortions, harmonic distortions, and timing.

The first compressor is called the FG4014. It is modern, clean, pristine, and can compress program material in a musical but transparent manner. It is perfect for all types of mixes and masters, and even sounds great on drum overheads and acoustic guitar.

The second compressor is called the FG8014. This analog beast of a compressor is a hybrid model of a famous british console compressor combined with characteristics of another famous compressor known for it’s red faceplate. It’s punchy, fat, tight, and rich sounding, with a drive control that can enhance the transformer saturation to give it even more attitude. It is an amazing buss compressor for all types of music including rock, pop, country, hip hop, house, and more. It also sounds amazing on drum busses and even individual drums like kick snare and toms. This compressor was designed to be the ultimate “dream buss compressor”.

The third compressor is called FG MU. It is modeled after the classic Fairchild 670, but then we added characteristics of two modern Vari MU compressors as well. It is absolutely gorgeous sounding with a warm, fat, deeeeep, musical character that is perfect for all types of music. For mastering, it can add the perfect final bit of glue, air, depth, and transient sparkle.

All of the compressors in the VBC bundle have a variable hi pass filter, AND a mix knob that can be used to control the ratio of the compressed signal to the dry signal. The FG MU can be used in stereo and mid/side. Each compressor can be used in a series, and the series can be rearranged by dragging and dropping. Compressing a mix with each one doing a very little amount can sound amazing! The series also makes it very easy to A/B/C the compressors on source material. Finally, VBC will come with stock presets made by some of the industry’s top mixers.

Virtual Buss Compressors will be available November, 2012, with an introductory price of $199 USD.
