Chokehold has released version 1.2.3 of Clipmax, a free clipper effect plug-in for Windows and Mac.
It’s just a pretty basic clipper, nothing fancy or spectacular, but it’s my first and I guess you gotta start somewhere. And hey, it’s free. And low on CPU. And cross-platform. And multi-format. And 32/64 bits. And skinnable.
Changes in Clipmax v1.2.3
- Fixed AU validation issue.
- Fixed DMG SymLinks.
- Fixed license related matters.
- Improved clipping LED further.
Clipmax is available for download for Windows and Mac (VST/AU).

Open Source Audio Research has released version 1.3.0 of Protoplug, an on-the-fly scriptable plug-in using LuaJIT.
Protoplug is a VST/AU plugin that lets you load and edit Lua scripts as audio effects and instruments.
The scripts can process audio and MIDI, display their own interface, and use external libraries. Transform any music software into a live coding environment!
Changes in Protoplug v1.3
- New: An embedded interactive Lua prompt based on ilua. It allows you to quickly inspect or modify any globals in the current Lua state.
- New: Live Mode. Check this new option to enable compile-as-you-type, in the traditional live-coding style.
- Better host support and packaging. If you had any trouble with the 1.0 version, it may be fixed in the new version.
- Modified the way parameters are created in the Lua API. This may break some previous scripts, but the fix is easy (check the examples for the new declaration style).
Protoplug is available for download for Windows, Mac & Linux.

Chokehold has launched Dark VX Kick, a free sampled kick drum instrument featuring 4 velocity layers, round-robins and a lot of flexibility.
The samples on the “DRY” channel aren’t quite “dry”, they were processed by analog hardware EQs, a Harrison 32EQ and an SSL 611.
The “COMPRSD” channel was expanded and squashed with u-he’s Presswerk compressor.
The “SUB KICK” channel spills nothing but ultra-low sub-bass, just in case you need any subwoofers blown.
The “ROOM” Aux was necessary because the original samples didn’t really bring that sense of space into the mix, so I ran them through a Lexicon LXP Room processor to give them back some ambience.
The “REVERB” Aux does what it says, it recreates the sound of a modified Lexicon LXP Chamber.
All the mixer channels are independent samples, you could use this plugin for only the Sub Kick or the samples on the Reverb track if you wanted to. The individual mixer channels can be un-/muted completely by clicking on their respective mute buttons.
The plug-in is available to download for Windows and Mac (VST/AU).

Voxengo has updated its free effect plug-ins Beeper to version 2.7, MSED to version 2.8 and Stereo Touch to version 2.7.
Beeper is an auxiliary audio processing AU and VST plugin which you can use to insert short beep, noise burst or silence signals to any sound material. This plugin may help you protect your work from theft. It is safe to apply this plugin to any mission-critical material because plugin does not perform any processing on the audio between the inserted signals.
MSED is a professional audio encoder-decoder plug-in for mid-side processing which is able to encode (split) the incoming stereo signal into two components: mid-side pair, and vice versa: decode mid-side signal pair into stereo signal.
Stereo Touch implements a classic technique of transforming a monophonic track into spacious stereophonic track by means of mid/side coding technique. By means of this plugin you can easily get spacious and even “surround” sounding tracks, without utilizing a double-tracked recording technique.
Changes in the updates
- Added VST3 support.
- Implemented color scheme editor with load and save functions.
- Added “Brown” and “White” color schemes.
- Redesigned the infrastructure controls.
The plug-ins are available for download as freeware for Windows and Mac (VST/AU).
