Gretsch 1960s Round Badge Soul Kit BFD Pack

Some of the articulations include wallets on snares, tea-towels on toms and chains on ride cymbals. Also included are congas,a tambourine and shakers. The kit was recorded at Miloco’s The Square Studios in London using vintage pre-amps and ribbon mics.

The first 20 lucky customers will get the pack for free, the next 30 will be £15 GBP, the next 50 will be £25 GBP and then it will return to the retail price of £35 GBP.

Drumdrops launches 1970s Slingerland Classic Rock Kit

Drumdrops has announced the release of 1970s Slingerland Classic Rock Kit, a multi-format drum kit sample library mixed by Alan Moulder.

Drumdrops 1970s Classic Rock Kit

This 1970s Slingerland Classic Rock Kit is a truly spectacular kit. A deep sounding kick drum, five toms and a classic Slingerland Radio King 14″ x 7″ snare drum, makes this kit a great choice for anyone who wants to re-enact their 70s rock classics. However it is not a one-trick pony as often shown by the engineers and producers who use it on their records while working at the Pool studio in London where it resides. To get the best out of this kit we enlisted the help of one of the leading alternative rock mix engineers in the world – Alan Moulder.

Alan Moulder needs no introduction. Voted UK Producer of the year in 2014 for the BRIT awards and Music Producers Guild Awards, Alan is one of the UK’s most sonically innovative Alternative Rock Producer/Mixers. Working prolifically in the UK and USA, Alan has been at the helm of some of rock music’s most iconic records and his credits include Nine Inch Nails, The Killers, The Smashing Pumpkins, Foo Fighters, My Bloody Valentine, Them Crooked Vultures, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Arctic Monkeys, Led Zeppelin, Death Cab For Cutie, Foals and Royal Blood to name but a few.

The kit comprises a 24″ x 14″ Kick drum, 12″, 13″, 14″ & 15″ Rack Toms and an 18″ Floor Tom. The snare used was a 14″ x 7″ Slingerland Radio King snare. Cymbals used Zildjian 14″ New Beat hi-hats, a 21″ Zildjian Custom K Ride, a Zildjian K Dark Medium Thin 18″ Crash and a Zildjian Vintage Cie 16″ Crash.

The 1970s Slingerland Classic Rock Kit packs are available for purchase at 20% off for a limited time, using voucher code slingerland20 at checkout. Any customers who previously purchased the Vintage 60s Gretsch Round Badge Soul Kit (any pack except the one shot sample pack) will have a free one shot sample pack of the Slingerland added to their account.

A Kontakt 5 pack and a BFD pack which are scheduled for release soon.

Drumdrops Gretsch 1960s Round Badge Soul Kit

The Gretsch 1960s Round Badge Kits are legendary kits. Currently they are one of the most sought after kits from that era. Drumdrops recorded this kit to capture a certain sound, the sound of the late 60s and early 70s that came out of Royal Studios in Memphis. Home to legendary producer and founder of Hi Records, Willie Mitchell. This studio was responsible for recording hit after hit from famous Soul Artists such as Al Green and Ann Peebles. Drumdrops under the guidance of producer / drummer Timmy Rickard studied and recreated the drum sound.

Unlike the one microphone, large open room drum sounds coming out of Motown and Stax in the 60’s/early 70’s, Willie Mitchell preferred a small dry room, often using three or four microphones on the drum kit. To capture the same sound Drumdrops used the suited dry live room at Miloco’s The Square in London. The concept behind the mic positioning is unique to this release. They used five mic’s, each placed in carefully selected positions around the kit, so each mic captures the drum kit as a whole, meaning you can use any one mic as your drum sound, or you can blend any or all of the mic’s to create your ideal sound (in the Kontakt pack).

The drum kit was produced, mixed and recorded by South London drummer Timmy Rickard who has studied the grooves and sound of this great era. The kit is a classic sounding late 60s kit with wallets placed on the tuned down snares, a tea towel was used on the floor tom and they have recorded the ride with and without a chain.

The kit comprises a 20″ x 14″ Kick drum, 13″ x 9″ Rack Tom and a 16″ x 16″ Floor Tom. The snares used were a combination of a Gretsch Renown Maple 14″ x 6″ snare with a Red Sparkle finish (c.2010) a Gretsch Renown maple 14″ x 5″ snare with a Black Oyster Swirl finish, a Ludwig Acrolite 14″ x 5″ (c.1970) and a Ludwig 400″ 14″ x 5″ snare (c.1960). Cymbals were dark sounding Bosphorous New Orleans Hi Hats (2 x 16″ Crashes), a 20″ Ride and an 18″ Crash. Drumdrops have also included shakers, tambourines and congas.
The recording took place in Miloco’s The Square Studios in London. As only five microphones were used Drumdrops utilized the vintage external mic pre’s (Telefunken V76’s, Neve 1066, Calrec PQ1061) recording straight to Pro Tools. All of the kit microphones used were ribbon microphones. They used 3 x Coles 4038 ribbons around the kit and for the overhead an STC 4021 ball & biscuit. Drumdrops also setup a room microphone which was a U47 FET running through a Calrec PQ1061 Mic Pre. In the Kontakt 5 pack all five microphones can be accessed on every drum using the mic blend feature.

The “Kontakt Pack” has been designed exclusively for the latest full version of Native Instruments Kontakt 5. The pack includes up to sixteen velocities of each articulation and up to 5 round robins. In total it contains 17275 samples. Included in the Kontakt pack is the latest version of the Drumdrops Kontakt 5 instrument.

The pack will cost £45 GBP. Requires Kontakt 5.2.0 full version or higher.

Drumdrops releases Folk Rock Drops Volume 2

Drumdrops Folk Rock Drums Volume 2

Drumdrops has announced the release of Folk Rock Drops Volume 2, a collection of 17 modern Folk Rock drum tracks available as Multi-tracks, Stems, Loops and song construction loops.

Folk Rock Drops Volume 2 contains 17 drum tracks taking influence from a range of mainly modern folk rock tracks with a few old classics thrown in. The tracks were once again played by Folk Rock drummer Martyn Barker and recorded and mixed by legendary Producer / Engineer Phill Brown. Recorded at the historic Miloco Livingston Studios in London in the brighter sounding live room this kit was close mic’d. The kit used was Martyn’s 1980’s Gretsch Maple 4416 Kit.

The drum tracks take reference from Artists such as Ray La Montagne, Elliot Smith, Bon Iver, Goldfrapp, Little Feat and Bombay Bicycle Club amongst others. Ranging in tempo from 80 BPM to 184 BPM there is a huge range of tracks and grooves to choose from. Six tracks were played with Brushes and two with Hotrods.

For the sound Phill Brown (John Martyn, Bob Marley, Rolling Stones, Talk Talk, Led Zeppelin) close mic’d this kit as a contrast to the 5 mic process used on Volume 1. Mics used were classic drum mics – AKG D112 on the Kick, Shure SM57s on the Snare, Sennheiser 421’s on the toms, KM84 on the Ride and Hi-Hat, Coles 4038’s as overheads and two room mics – a Sony C48 and Neumann U89. These pick up the ambience of the drum room. All of the mics were recorded through the SSL G-Series mic pre’s and recorded straight to 2″ tape on a Studer A80 with a 16 track headblock before being transferred into Pro Tools.

The pack is available for purchase for £68 GBP (Multitrack Session), £47 GBP (Stems and Mix files), £40 GBP (Loops Pack).
