Heavyocity has partnered with Icebreaker Audio to release BitRate II, a major update to the BitRate semi-modular 8-bit drum machine for Reaktor.
BitRate II uses multiple methods of retro digital synthesis and sampling to produce charismatic and nostalgic drum sounds. The included sound engines cover chipsounds, FM synthesis, lofi sampling, and glitchy circuit bending.
On top of these unique sound engines, BitRate II also offers a 5-track mixer and a master fx section that includes an analogue modelled EQ, bus compressor, and speaker simulator for added lo-fi effect.
The drums can be triggered via MIDI or from the internal sequencer. The sequencer provides two modulation sequences per drum, which can be routed to virtually any combination of sound parameters in any amount.
BitRate II also comes bundled with the MonoBoy instrument, a melodic counterpart for BitRate II. MonoBoy uses similar sound engines, but in an interface more suited to melodic playing.
The BitRate II Bundle ships with a total of 140 preset snapshots including a variety of sounds from kits and beats to synths and samples.
BitRate II features
- 5 drum slots into which you can load any one of 4 sound engines.
- 4 lo-fi digital sound engines: Chip, FM, Sampler, Glitch.
- The ability to sample from the audio input into a custom-built sample engine.
- A built-in sequencer with 2 modulation sequences per drum.
- Per-track sequence length, allowing for complex poly-rhythms.
- EQ, Compressor, and Speaker Simulator master effects.
- 3 sound generator modes, including a unique DM sampler.
- Easy-to-use arpeggiator and Voice Controls
- 2 Modulation sequences.
- A master FX section that includes the one-of-a-kind Bit Delay effect.
The BitRate II & MonoBoy bundle is available for purchase for an introductory price of $29 USD for the first two weeks (regular $49 USD). During this period, original BitRate owners can buy BitRate II for $19 USD.

Moon Echo Audio has announced the release of Ghost, a ReFill that allows you to embrace the sound of the spirit world with 60 Combinator patches made with the essence of true lo-fi.
The first section of combinators includes mysterious plucked strings, damaged keyboards and synthesizer toys while the second selection contains vast ambient pads and complex organic textures. This deep collection is one of a kind which pulls from both organic and synthesized materials.
This collection is completely customizable as the knobs, switches and routing devices can be manipulated by the user to create their very own lo-fi/bit crushed/ambient creations.
Over 500MB of extra unique samples and soundscapes at 24bit/48kHz are also included for inspiration to create your own musical works. There is no need to fear our Ghosts however, they just want you to play with them. This ReFill utilizes Reason 7 and up.
The ReFill is available for purchase for $49 USD.

99Sounds has launched 99 Drum Samples, a free collection of electronic and acoustic drum hits which have been built from scratch and processed with enternal and external audio gear.
I’ve been building this personal collection of drum samples for years and it’s being released now as a free bonus sample pack for the first music making contest on 99Sounds!
The sounds were recorded from various analogue and digital sources and processed with various on-board effects and external gear. My favorite part of the pack are the drum machine sounds and acoustic drum hits which I’ve recorded to a cassette tape in order to enhance them with a bit of punch and grit. Some of the included drum hits were also passed through an old tape delay unit, resulting in a warm organic sound.
The pack also includes a selection of modern electronic drum samples, some acoustic drums (captured with my trusty Edirol R-09 recorder) and a set of drums which were synthesized with various analogue and digital instruments (including the Korg Electribe ER-1 drum machine and the Lell UDS analogue drum generator). I’ve also included a small set of lo-fi drums which were recorded from various toy instruments such as the Yamaha DD-5.
The sample pack is a free download at 99Sounds.

Fairly Confusing Waveforms has introduced Terrible Piano, a free piano instrument for Native Instruments Kontakt.
This set has been recorded by accident. I happened to need to wait some hours alone in a room with this old upright piano, which has been quite obviously kept there purely for decorative reasons. I started to play around with it, recording notes to portable recorder. To make it somewhat interesting I picked rater unusual microphone position, I placed it under the piano. It barely fit the space between the floor and the instrument, and so the recording has a sort of claustrophobic, creepy vibe. If you have ever wondered, how would piano sound from a cockroach perspective, this is it.
It has been cut to samples and patched into an instrument in Kontakt. The piano was way out of tune, surely it hasn’t been serviced for decades, if ever. I made a rough attempt at fixing the tuning in Kontakt, it still sounds broken, just not as much as before. Kontakt patch offers both tuning versions, it also has an EQ, convolution reverb and mono/stereo switch. Here’s how it sounds, once again murdering a classic for demonstration purpose.
Terrible Piano is available to download at no charge. Requires full version of Kontakt 4.2 or higher (Wav files also included).
