Drumdrops has announced the Ludwig Super Classic Kit, a new drum sample library.
Most people will know of the reputation of Ludwig drums, famously used by Ringo Starr from a little known 60s Liverpudlian band, and later by John Bonham of Led Zeppelin. They sound fantastic, warm and responsive with a lovely dark tone from the thin 3 ply mahogany, poplar and mahogany shells with maple reinforcing hoops. Made before music became really amplified and loud, these drums were designed to sound good rather than generate loads of volume and as such they are wonderfully full and tonal, especially when recorded and miked up. Although obviously a 1960s kit, drummers continued to use this model though the 70s, and do so to this very day in fact… They just record so well.
The particular kit we used is one from session drummer Tim Weller’s collection and is a blue oyster pearl finish. The drums are shallower than many modern drums which helps focus their sound and control their decay.
For this kit we went for a dry controlled sound and used Miloco’s The Square in London. The kit was close mic’d. The Kit was recorded by Drumdrops engineer Ben Thackeray and mixed by Grammy award winning, ex Abbey Road engineer Guy Massey.
The Ludwig Super Classic Kit is available in 5 different formats. The Multi-Velocity Pack, Single Hits Pack, Drum Replacement Pack and All Samples Pack are out now. The Kontakt 5 pack with the Drumdrops Kontakt instrument will be released on the 28th of August 2014 between 4 pm and 4.30 pm GMT.
The first 20 customers will get the Kontakt pack free. The next 50 can purchase it for £15 GBP, the next 50 for £25 GBP, the next 50 for £30 GBP and then it will return to £40 GBP.

Analogue Drums has released Bombastix , a virtual drum instrument library for Native Instruments Kontakt.
Bombastix is a sampling of a “holy grail” classic 1976 Ludwig in serious rock dimensions, including a gargantuan 26″ kick. The kit has been tracked with 3 distinct snare variations, and two sets of cymbals – hand picked classic Paistes, and modern Sabian AAXs – to give you plenty of options for fitting the kit to your track.
Bombastix will fit the bill for modern and classic rock tracks, or anywhere punchy hard hitting is required. It has been mixed for polished but natural tone – good-to-go as-is, or you can easily take the mix further.
The kit was sampled at The Lab studio in Auckland, New Zealand, in a mid-sized tracking room, though a Neve desk, with the usual assortment of high end hand-picked mics, and processed with select outboard pieces.
The library is available to purchase for $29 USD.

Drumdrops has introduced the Rogers Big R Dub Kit, the ultimate dub kit sample library.
This kit has been used to record Drumdrops in Dub Volume 3 and Drumdrops in Ska as well as many other commercial releases.
The kit is comprised of a 24″ x 14″ Bass Drum, a Ludwig Black Magic 14″ x 6.5″ Snare Drum, a Ludwig Acrolite 14″ x 5″ Snare Drum, a huge 18″ x 16″ Floor Tom, and two Rack Toms, a 14″ x 10″ and a 13″ x 8″. The cymbals used were 15″ Zildjian A Sweet Hi-Hats and a 17″ A Custom Crash. Percussion for this kit includes a 14″ Timbale drum and a set of Bongos. Also included is some Electronic Percussion using a Boss PC-2 Percussion Synthesizer and a Tama Techstar TS-204.
The kit was recorded and mixed by UK producer, musician and engineer Mike ‘Prince Fatty’ Pelanconi. The drummer used was reggae specialist Horseman. His hard-hitting beats have backed the likes of Wailing Souls, Sugar Minot, Max Romeo, Barrington Levy, John Holt, Big Youth, Gregory Isaacs and many more.
The recording and mixing took place in Miloco’s The Ironworks in Brighton, UK. At the centre of the Control Room can be found a rare vintage 1970s BBC console. The outboard racks are full of great gear including a Lang PEQ-2 EQ, a Langevin EQ258A EQ, and plenty of dub reverbs. All of the drums were recorded without compression. Mike chose not to record any room microphones for this kit as he wanted a tight, dry Reggae sound.
The kit is available to purchase as a Kontakt Pack (£45 GBP), Multi-Velocity Pack (£15 GBP) and Single Hits Pack (£7.50 GBP).

Toontrack has launched the first release of November’s annual Metal Month: Metal!, a new EZX expansion library for EZdrummer and Superior Drummer.
What happens when you put a massive, all-new drum recording in the hands of three of the most in demand producers in modern metal, let them bring it to their own studio environments and equip them with an unparalleled set of audio shaping tools? You not only get a collection of nine custom drum kits – you get a rampant battery armed for complete audio destruction. A nine-headed behemoth that leaves nothing but rubble behind. Nothing.
The Metal! EZX is based on a new drum recording engineered by Daniel Bergstrand in Norway’s highly unique Tanken Studio. The raw material was then individually remixed by Mark Lewis, Jason Suecof and Daniel Bergstrand himself into nine drum kits tailor-made for metal. Between them, these three producers have worked with some of modern metal’s most influential acts as well as those pioneering today’s multifaceted scene: Meshuggah, In Flames, Trivium, Whitechapel, DevilDriver, The Black Dahlia Murder, God Forbid and Dimmu Borgir, to name a few. The Metal! EZX also comes with a versatile collection of grooves and fills performed by Soilwork and metal drummer extraordinaire Dirk Verbeuren.
Sometimes the word metal just isn’t enough, it needs an exclamation mark!
Metal! EZX features
- All-new recording featuring DW Collector X-shell and Ludwig Quadra Plus drums.
- A total of nine (9) custom kits, remixed and layered with additional as well as personal samples by Mark Lewis, Jason Suecof and Daniel Bergstrand.
- Included MIDI library performed by Dirk Verbeuren.
The Metal! EZX costs $89 USD / 69 EUR.
