Precisionsound releases MBira bva Zimbabwe

Precisionsound MBira bva Zimbabwe

Precisionsound has released MBira bva Zimbabwe, a virtual mbira instrument library.

The MBira bva Zimbabwe is a twenty-two key MBira with added machachara—or “sizzler” to give a buzzing sound. The buzzing is traditionally important because it is believed to attract the ancestral spirits.

Precisionsound has deconstructed the sizzler from the original tone, so that the user can mix between the chromatic tone, the release noises, and the sizzler sound, all within the Kontakt interface. The user can also adjust the sizzler’s decay independently, to find a balance between the tone of the MBira keys and the buzz of the sizzler.

The MBira bva Zimbabwe library was sampled in two velocity layers, and recorded four round robins for each of the chromatic metal keys, sizzlers, and release samples. The instrument was close-miked in stereo, and the library contains 252 24-bit WAV samples. The key range of the instrument is from B1 to C5.

MBira bva Zimbabwe features

  • 252 stereo 24-bit WAV samples.
  • Chromatic metal key notes and release noises.
  • Percussive “sizzler” samples from the MBira body.
  • 1 program for NI Kontakt 3-5 with scripted interface.
  • 3 programs for NI Kontakt 2.
  • 3 programs for Logic EXS24.

The library is available to purchase for $20 USD. Kontakt programs require the full version of Kontakt (not compatible with the free Kontakt Player).

Nine Volt Audio releases Duo – Mbira in Kontakt 3/4 format

Nine Volt Audio Duo - Mbira for Kontakt

Nine Volt Audio has announced the release of Duo – Mbira for Native Instruments Kontakt 3 or higher.

With origins dating to the 1500s, the mbira’s combination of driving melody, rhythm and percussive “zing” has deep spiritual and cultural roots to areas of Africa. Sometimes referred to as a “finger xylophone”, mbiras are equipped with hand-forged iron “keys” attached to a wooden sounding board, specially chosen for their resonate qualities. Keys are plucked with the thumbs and an index finger.

At first glance the mbira resembles a kalimba, but unlike the uniform keys found on a kalimba, the mbira uses keys of varying widths, weight and thickness to create tones richer in upper harmonics and low overtones.

As part of Nine Volt Audio’s Duo line of products, we’ve recorded TWO mbiras. The larger mbira dzavadzimu originates from Zimbabwe and has 23 keys with its lowest note measuring over 7” long. The nyunga nyunga is a smaller 14 key mbira with traditional buzzers (which can be turned on or off). Having two different sampled instruments allows composers to create the signature interlocking musical relationships found in mbira music and can make one feel as if they are sitting between two players.

With over 3000 samples and patches that range from natural and earthy to reinforced and modern, Duo puts the intimate sound of the mbria at your fingertips.

Duo – Mbira for Kontakt features

  • Over 1.5 GB of 44.1kHz/24bit samples and 32 Kontakt 3.5/4 instrument patches and multis. Download is 950 MB.
  • Core natural patches are offered in “Lite”, “Medium” and “Large” sizes to accommodate different levels of RAM and CPU usage. “Large” patches have 80-100 samples per note sampled on both instruments. User interface controls are available to control the depth of automatic sample rotation and other humanization features. Humanization can approximate 8-10×10 round robin and beyond.
  • “Duo” patches are available allowing for the simulation of two people playing simultaneously. These patches have additional “Spread” interface controls.
  • Arpeggiator patches and multis include 12 patterns per patch. Patterns 1-6 are duple meter (2/4, 4/4), patterns 7-10 triple meter (3/4, 6/8), and patterns 11 and 12 are 5/4 and 7/8, respectively.
  • User interface controls are available to alter chromatic playing modes to the instruments’ original keys and scales – along with numerous other keys and scales.
  • Additional user interface controls include: convolution reverb (with 14 custom IR .wavs), saturation, stereo width, velocity curve, low and high pass filters, delay, low, mid and high EQ gain, AHDSR, remap knob and humanization.

Duo – Mbira is available to purchase for $59.99 USD.

Bolder Sounds Celtic Pipes, version 2 adds KSP scripting (+ free Thumb Piano released)

Bolder Sounds Celtic Pipes

Bolder Sounds has released version 2 of Celtic Pipes, a sample library featuring a comprehensive set of Bagpipes, Uilleann Pipes and Pub Pipes.

We’ve sampled every single musical note these instruments make, samples are also presented in both short and long loop lengths, mapped out in authentic note ranges with extensions on the highest sample. You can set a drone into motion within the use of the sustain pedal in the lower octaves, and then wail away on the melodic (chanter) part of the pipes mono phonically using pitch bend and continuous controllers without affecting the drones, all on the same midi channel, making for stunningly realistic pipe samples.

The Kontakt version of the Celtic Pipes has been updated to version 2 with newly added KSP scripting. It is a free upgrade for exisitng owners.

Celtic Pipes is available to purchase for Kontakt 3+, EXS24, and Gigastudio 2 for $29.96 USD until 24 July, 2010 in the Bolder Sounds Summer Sale (regular price $39.95 USD).

Bolder Sounds has also released a free Thumb Piano sample library for Kontakt 3+ and Apple EXS24.

This thumb piano (also called Kalimba, Sansa or Mbira) comes from a family of instruments originally from Africa. The range of this particular instrument is 2 octaves plus a major 3rd.

It was sampled with both plucks from the flesh of the thumb as well as the finger nail of the thumb for a brighter sound. Also each sample zone has 3 round robin samples assigned to it. So if you play the same key 3 times in a row, each time you will hear a different sample.

Bo Clausen has contributed some wonderful KSP Kontakt scripting as well which is documented in more detail later in this manual. Thank You Bo!

Soniccouture Array Mbira, thumb piano powered by Kontakt 4 Player

Soniccouture Array Mbira

Soniccouture has released Array Mbira, a sample library for Kontakt featuring a 5 octave thumb piano from Array Instruments, made especially for Soniccouture.

The Mbira is originally a folk instrument from Africa. Sometimes called a Thumb Piano, Sanza, or Kalimba, they are generally home-made and consist of several metal tines attached to a gourd or piece of wood, which are then plucked with the thumbs. They are mostly small, with a handful of notes.

Array Instruments, a U.S. company started by Bill Wesley and Patrick Hadley, have taken the concept of this ancient African idiophone to a whole new level, not only in terms of instrument design but also in purity of sound, and range of pitch. The Array Mbira is no toy, it’s a highly advanced musical instrument built to exacting specifications.

Array Mbira features

  • 9 GB Library (4GB on disc with Kontakt sample compression) – 4 GB download.
  • 24bit 44.1khz Stereo Sampling – separate, phase aligned Pickup and Microphone channels.
  • 5 octave range: C1 – B5.
  • 8 Velocity levels, 3 alternate round robins: 4,112 samples in total.
  • Note off damping samples (8 samples per note) with configurable levels and midi control.
  • KSP Strummer module allows realistic MIDI controlled strumming of played notes.

Array mBira is available to purchase as a Kontakt Player 4 instrument for PC and Mac (VST/AU/RTAS) for 69 EUR for the download, 79 EUR on DVD (ships 1 August).

Note: You can get 15% off with promo code : LNSZ3OKEW6 (Offer expires 30th July 2010).
