Microhammer releases Bowed Bucket for Kontakt

Microhammer has released Bowed Bucket, a virtual instrument library for Native Instruments Kontakt.

This little beast is what happens when you build an instrument out of a 5 gallon plastic bucket, a wooden 4×4 and some cello strings. The bucket was fitted with tuning lugs and then holes were drilled out to allow individual strings to pass through, using the bottom wall as the bridge, so that sound projected outward and down. Then a 4×4 wooden beam was affixed to the bucket and the strings were then stretched up the heavy wooden neck, roughly nailed in place and hand -tuned. Remember that old string and paper cup trick from when you were a kid? Yeah, think bigger.

Microhammer Bowed Bucket

Bowing the strings produces a surprisingly clean, yet rich and beefy sound, with plenty of growl and low end and a nice clear bite. It’s sound is a little similar to electric cello, but with a unique rawness and body. For our percussion, we simply banged on it like an idiot, with results just as you’d expect – plastic bucket drums. We captured various bowed articulations from both inside and outside of the bucket. We also plugged in our custom polyphonic Sim-legato and Uberpeggiator systems to some instruments, just for kicks. And of course, as a bonus, we’ve also created a variety of very cool lead, pad, ambient droning and FX presets to take it to the next level.

Bowed Bucket features

  • 29 Kontakt patches (unlocked).
  • 568 Samples.
  • 545 MB Installed / 348 MB download.
  • 10 round robins for percussion and staccato patches.
  • Multiple dynamic intensity and velocity layers.
  • Custom Convolution Reverb Impulses.
  • Powerful Custom Performance, legato, FX, and arpeggiator controls.

Bowed Bucket for Kontakt (requires full version) is available to purchase for the introductory price of $24 USD until May 21th, 2011 (regular price $29 USD).

Gnomehammer 2010, Tonehammer’s freebies season is back

Tonehammer Gnomehammer

Tonehammer has kicked off this year’s Gnomehammer season, offering various free virtual instruments until Christmas.

We have all received poor xmas gifts in life … whether it was handmade insults like socks or sweaters, a low-carb cooking book or a set of meditation tapes.

Gnomehammer is proud to follow this lackluster tradition by regifting last years entire Gnomehammer fruitcake collection for free until December 25th 2010.

This strange collection of quasi-musical oddities was mostly captured in one epic recording session somewhere around Thanksgiving im 2009 at the Tonehammer studio, involving lots of Belgian beer, balloons, helium, oxygen deprivation, us and a few of our closest friends. While there is a bit of a winter or even some sort of pseudo-Christmas theme running through this library, it’s definitely intended to fitin well with content from Tonehammer’s Antidrum and Mini series of libraries. The library includes a wide range of comedic sounds from authentic helium choir (yeah – we sucked down a whole tank of 2He) to drum kits from snow- and ice sounds – from human beat box through PVC ensembles to manipulation of childrens balloons – from glockenspiel to sleighbells etc.

Microhammer “Gnomehammer”

  • Free downloable until December 25th 2010 (normal price $19 on www.microhammer.com)
  • Articulations include: Snow Drums (drums made from snow sounds), Wintery Pod (drums made from throwing stones on ice), Toy Glockenspiel, Holy Ambiencs, Gnomish Choir (aka Helium Choir), PVC Beatbox Ensemble, Luftballon.
  • Intelligent editing and programming.
  • Read me (.pdf) install, patch and hint documentation.
  • 47 instrument patches, 1405 samples, 531MB installed, 313MB .rar download.
  • Sample resolution and source format: 44.1Khz/16/24Bit mono- and stereo .wav format.
  • Format(s): Kontakt, SFZ and .wav.
  • Note: Native Instruments Kontakt 3.5 and later. Full retail versions required for Kontakt instruments.
  • Note: Free Kontakt Player does not support this product. Full version required.
  • Note: This product is derived from previous, Tonehammer “Gnomehammer” collection.

Tonehammer will be posting something new every day until December 25th, 2010.

Microhammer Kinderklavier, sample pack for Kontakt

Microhammer Kinderklavier

Microhammer has announced the release of Kinderklavier, a sampled instrument for Native Instruments Kontakt.

The Kinderklavier is an iconic sound found in commercials, TV, soundtracks and pop music. From cute and innocent, dark and twisted, to pop and rock, Microhammer’s Kinderklavier is a truly versatile library.

This Kinderklavier was deep sampled and close-mic’ed to capture all it’s subtle nuances. As usual, we deeply sampled the instrument, every single 25 notes with 8 round robin and an average of 6 velocity layers per note. The keys of the Kinderklavier had such unique character that we had to multi-sample and include them as release triggers with multiple round robin and velocity layers. In addition to our standard deep sampling, the Kinderklavier was beaten with sticks and mallets, dismantled, probed, strummed and tortured in just about as many ways as we could think of, creating a variety of effects sounds. After extracting all usable sounds, we decided to push the library further by creating a set of tuned, deep ambiences. Topping off the library is a complete set of custom controls tuned for each patch and our own custom reverb with 46 unique impulses to choose from.

This library includes custom front-panel controls and modwheel automation to allow pitch adjustment of up to +/- 6 octaves as well as additional features.

Kinderklavier features

  • Deep sampled kinderklavier, every key sampled with 8 round robin pr. key and 6 velocity layers pr. key.
  • Special FX made with sticks, mallets, strums and torture.
  • Special FX slaps, taps, clacks, glisses.
  • 46 custom convolutions.
  • Unique UI/interface programming.
  • 14 additional special ambient/MW controlled patches.
  • 16 Kontakt Instruments and 2 Kontakt Multis.
  • 1494 Samples.
  • 46 Bonus custom impulses.
  • 900 MB download, 2.2 GB Installed.
  • Sample resolution: 44.1Khz / 24Bit stereo .wav format.
  • Format(s): Kontakt and .wav.
  • Note: Native Instruments Kontakt 3.5 and later. Full retail versions required for Kontakt instruments.
  • Note: Free Kontakt Player does not support this product. Full version required.

Kinderklavier is available to purchase for $35 USD.

Microhammer Luminabells and The Ranch, sampled instruments for Kontakt

Microhammer Luminabells

Microhammer has released Luminabells and Ranch, two new instruments for Native Instruments Kontakt.

The fragile and inherently musical bell-like aspect of the old incandescent bulb has always fascinated us and we knew that time was running out for this poor little device. That is why we must now bring you Luminabells – the mysterious and angelic essence of the simple ordinary light bulb, captured as a tiny, starry galaxy of humble and yet beautiful sounds. We recorded all manner of sizes and shapes of the old filament style incandescent bulb, lovingly sculpted into a rich collection of tuned and un-tuned percussion, sustaining melodic tones and otherworldly effects.

Luminabells features

  • 71 Kontakt Instruments featuring sounds of over 40 lightbulbs of all shapes and sizes.
  • Up to 6 velocity layers on every note, 10 round robins for every velocity layer.
  • Sounds include Taps, clicks, clinks, dings, pings, knocks, pops and clacks and other transient impacts. Tuned and untuned tonal resonant dings, rings and pings. Swooshes, shakes, rattles, rolls and other vibrations. Tuned humming, buzzing and droning sustains. Special effects, ambiences and unusual creations.
  • 45 bonus custom convolution reverb impulses.
  • 663 MB Installed, 1511 samples in total.
  • Sample resolution: 44.1Khz / 24Bit stereo pcm .wav format.
Microhammer The Ranch

The Ranch is an eclectic collection of exotic “instruments” derived from a Ranch in the great Pacific Northwest.

The library contains a variety of sound sources that were manipulated and played like music instruments, including tuned plow, extensive scrapyard session, tuned bells, storms and windchimes, percussive sprinklers, crickets and birds, percussive foozball table, footsteps in grass, gravel and dirt, golf carts and haybalers and many other instruments. We’ve added custom control knobs and hand-made convolution impulses to give you free range. We’ve even included plenty of experimental FX presets based on the original source to give you a few ideas and help plant the seeds of creativity.

The core idea was to encapsulate the sounds of traditional Ranch living, and then plow them into an endless field of musical bounty.

The Ranch features

  • Core Articulations: Bees Tuned, Bees, Big Sprinklers, Broken Pipe, Crickets and Birds, Foosball FX, Footsteps in grass, gravel and dirt, Golfcart and Haybaler, Irrigation system, Kite, Livia Playground Adventure, Plow, Rusty Bell, Extensive scrap yard, Small sprinkler, storms and winchimes.
  • 31 instrument patches, 975 samples, 45 Bonus Impulses, 620 MB installed, 390 MB .rar download.
  • Sample resolution: 44.1Khz / 24Bit stereo .wav format.

The Luminabells and Ranch sound libraries for Kontakt 3.5+ (Kontakt Player NOT supported) are available to purchase for $35 USD each. Both instruments are included in the Microhammer September Bundle for $59 USD (price valid until the next bundle release).

Microhammer March 2010 Bundle

  • Bronze Bin — Bronze is the most popular metal used to create top-quality musical bells and cymbals. So, when we came across this little refuse receptacle of pure brazen bronze, we thought ‘What a waste!’ Not in the waste-basket sense of the word, but a waste of musical potential. Every edge, curve, face and angle of this bronze beauty creates amazingly complex and unique sounds, full of harmonics, overtones and even undertones. In much the same way art and practicality intersect in the conventional use of this bin, so do percussion and melody intersect creating an enormous palette from a single source. Producing soft bell-like tones to a raspy wash of colliding frequencies the Microhammer Bronze Bin is a truly unique tuned percussion instrument.
  • Jews Harp — We recorded the Jew’s Harp in-depth by recorded all the resonance layers and round-robin one could humanly get out of this wonder. In additional we did tons of more unique FX. But the most prominent part of the library is our fancy “word builder” for it … its actually cooler then a word builder … We sampled all letters in the alphabet (A-Z) and numbers (1-10) … But wait … THERE IS MORE … We also included the Danish letters æ, ø and å into the recordings, since there is a huge community of Scandinavian Jaw Harp composers eagerly awaiting this release.
  • Overtone Flute — The Bamboo Overtone flute is like a little sibling to the Eastern European, Fujara. However the flute is distinctively different and almost human like in the sense it only has two holes. The flute is played by muting the bottom of the flute with your palm and bending the note. The overtones are generated by playing softer or harder in the flute and actually allows it to spand over four octaves. The sound is best described as ethnic/ethereal, but with that very distinct overtone charm to it. We sampled the hell out of it by multi-sampling the overtones in sustains and staccato and by doing over +350 BPM (80-140) based phrases on top of this – and with additional FX sections.
  • Format(s): Kontakt 3, SFZ and .wav
  • Note: Native Instruments Kontakt 3 / 4 full retail versions required.
  • Note: Free Kontakt Player will only work for 30 minutes with this product. Full version required to remove this restriction.

The Microhammer March 2010 Bundle is available to purchase for the introductory price of $59 USD until 15 April, 2010 (regular price $73 USD). The instruments are also available to purchase separately.

  • Slide Flute, the classic slide-whistle or slide-flute is a common staple of comedic and children’s music. The signature rise and fall is used both musically, as well as in old-school sound design and foley to signify objects rising or falling in space.

  • Smiley Drum, a 10-tongue major pentatonic variant of the classic propane drum concept, with a shallower, wider pan than most.
  • Clay Drum, this giant clay vase was chosen specifically for it’s unique sound and tonal resonance. Producing a wide variety of sounds, this clay drum is a both a percussive and melodic instrument.
  • Sand Drum, the unique surf-like sound is produced by a medium-sized enclosed drum about 1 1/4″ thick and filled with dozens of tiny silver metal beads.
  • Road Trip Vol. 1, little tidbits, oddities, improvisations and random gems found at various pit stops on a desert trip.
