Livid and Liine launch Hybrid Control + win custom Hybrid Setup in contest

Livid and Liine have announced the Hybrid Control Contest, a chance to win a hybrid setup.

Liine’s Grid and Livid Instruments’ Code join hands with Hybrid Control for Ableton Live.

Livid and Liine have teamed up to create truly unique Ableton Live control experience. Griid and Code can now be linked as a single controller. This hybrid concept is an innovative combination of multitouch and hardware.

Liine have often stated that the ultimate control setup involves both hardware and multitouch. They’ve put this approach into practice when building custom solutions for artists such as Orbital, Plastikman or Avril Lavigne’s keyboardist Steve Ferlazzo. And now, if you are a Griid and Livid Code owner, you can experience the power of hybrid control yourself.

Hybrid Control features

  • Four modes for Code: Mixer, EQ, Devices (x2).
  • Code track selection from Griid.
  • Griid navigation synced in Code.
  • Revised scripts for Ableton Live.

Hybrid Control is included with Griid (as of version 1.14.6).

Hybird Control setup
Experience controlling with multitouch & hardware with a one-of-a-kind Hybrid Control setup.

Until July 5th, 2012, you can enter the Hybrid Control contest for a chance to win a one-of-kind hybrid setup including an iPad with Griid Pro and the Livid Code in a custom case.

Borderlands audiovisual granular synth instrument by Chris Carlson

Chris Carlson is working on an iPad version of Borderlands, an interactive granular sampler instrument.

Demo video for the soon-to-be-released interactive granular sampler: Borderlands

This project is a mobile version of an audiovisual granular synthesis instrument that I built as my final project for Music 256a at CCRMA. The inspiration behind the original version along with early concept sketches and design details are presented here .

While the laptop version provides a large canvas and a great deal of RAM for audio files, the iPad’s multitouch capabilities offer a much richer interactive experience. I extended the instrument to take advantage of these resources and added a social/networking component to allow users to share their “scenes” and download the work of others.

Chris aims to have Borderlands for iPad available through the App Store by late spring 2012.

KMI intros QuNeo next-generation “3D Multi-Touch” portable iPad-sized music controller

Keith McMillen Instruments has introduced the QuNeo, the next generation of music software and hardware controllers for electronic musicians, DJs, VJs and DIY hackers.

Keith McMillen Instruments QuNeo

Redefining music production and performance, QuNeo (pronounced kyoo-ne-oh) covers all of the functionality of other controllers, while adding the power of extra dimensions. Quneo provides 27 pads, sliders and rotary sensors with 3D Multi-Touch recognition for pressure, velocity, and location sensitivity, which allows musicians playing electronic sounds to change their timbre (quality, brightness and volume) the harder or softer they are played by simply varying touch pressure. The pads are also responsive to X (left – right) and Y (up – down) and recognize multiple gestures for pinching and swiping.

Previously with first generation products, controlling music software and hardware was limited. You could only hit a pad, twist a knob or push a button to manipulate sounds and effects. KMI has resolved these restrictions with its innovative next generation line of Multi-Touch controllers: SoftStep, 12 Step, and now QuNeo, that transforms musical intent into audio through physical control of 3D Multi-touch sensor technology.

QuNeo features

  • The Size of an iPad: QuNeo is the size of an iPad 2 and fits in iPad accessories such as clips, stands and more.
  • 3D Tactile Pads, Sliders, Rotary Sensors and Switches: 27 pads, sliders and rotary sensors that are pressure, velocity, and location sensitive, with 17 switches responding to how hard you press.
  • LED Light Feedback: a remarkable lumination scheme combines variably diffusive elastomers with 251 multi-color variable brightness LEDs providing visual feedback that is immediately responsive and delightfully informative.
  • Class Compliant and Open Source Development Kit: QuNeo works with USB, MIDI or OSC and will communicate with your favorite music software environments right out of the box. More advanced users and programmers can download the development kit to create their own code to respond to QuNeo’s sensor data.

The QuNeo is scheduled for release in March 2012. It is currently priced at $200 USD for pre-sale at Kickstarter.com

Lemur for iPad

Liine has announced the release of Lemur, a multitouch MIDI/OSC controller app for iOS.

Lemur is a professional iOS controller app that doesn’t cut any corners. It lets you control anything, any way you want. Total flexibility means it can go as deep as you need it to.

Lemur can control DJ software, live electronic music performance software, studio production software (DAWs), VJ software, visual synthesis software, stage lighting and more.

Lemur features

  • Physics – Hated physics at school? Now you’ll love it! The behaviour of many Lemur objects can be affected by powerful and easy to use physical models which can make your controller bounce, rebound and oscillate. Make your controller come alive. What’s more, you can even control the physics parameters of one object from another. This opens up the door to a wide range of modulation options, ready to control any piece of gear.
  • Editor – The Lemur is provided with Lemur Editor, a cross-platform (Mac/Win) interface builder. This software enables you to create and edit templates, as well as loading them to Lemur. The number of pages that can be included in a single project is limited only by your imagination. In addition to the editing features, the Lemur Editor also provides a comprehensive hierarchical overview of your project. It also offers a full set of options to customize each object: dimension, shape, appearance, status and behavior. This is also where you can edit physics parameters.
  • Scripting – In the Lemur Editor, the multiline script panel opens up a whole new world of possibilities. You can modify the physical behaviour, appearance or size of an object in real time. Add a ball to a MultiBall object by touching a pad, zoom in on a fader for ultimate precision or modify a Text object content via MIDI or OSC. Use scripts to really tweak the response of your Lemur interface and make it feel like an extension of your body.
  • Connectivity – Lemur supports OSC and MIDI protocols over Wi-Fi. Lemur also supports CoreMIDI. You can use any standard MIDI interface through the Apple Camera Connection Kit, or an iOS specific audio interface such as iConnect MIDI. Lemur supports up to 8 different and simultaneous MIDI and OSC ports targets.

Lemur for iOS is available to purchase for $49.99 USD. All owners of Lemur hardware who purchase the Lemur app on or before January 5, 2012 are eligible for a 50% rebate.
