RedWirez Marshall 1960A/Celestion G12M-25s, free IR library

RedWirez Marshall 1960A/Celestion G12M-25

RedWirez has released a free impulse library of a Marshall 1960A with Celestion G12M 25-watt Greenbacks.

Ah, the legendary Marshall 1960A. Pretty, ain’t it? With its grill-cloth glistening in the bar-light as this beast muscles out power chords in an amaranthine haze of smoke, hot lights and adoring fans… this cab positively reeks of rock… the raucous, beer-soaked, unapologetic kind. Oh, and it sounds great, too.

It was the first cab we ever sampled and is still one of our favorites, so it seems fitting to release these IRs into the wild on Redwirez’ birthday.

Marshall 1960A IR features

  • Loaded with four, well-traveled 25-watt Celestion G12M “Greenbacks”.
  • 17 industry standard mics, so explore countless tonal possibilities: AKG C414B-ULS, Audix D6, Audix i5, Beyerdynamic M160, Coles 4038, Electrovoice RE20, Heil PR30, Neumann KM84, Neumann U47, Neumann U67, Neumann U87, Royer R121, Sennheiser MD409, Sennheiser MD421, Shure SM57, Shure SM7, TAB-Funkenwerk SM57. The paid version also includes DPA 4007, Neumann U47FET, Sennheiser MD441, Unidyne III 545, Earthworks TC30, Neumann M7 on BLUE Bottle, Neumann M8 on BLUE Bottle.
  • Added IRs of the G12M’s impedance curve at varying degrees of prominince (paid version only). These can be used to capture the effect of a tube amp interacting with the speaker. In general, tube amps have a higher output impedance than solid-state amps. As a result the speaker’s frequency response is shaped to varying degrees by it’s own impedance curve. All of our cabs will be getting this update in the near future.
  • Up to 54 positions per mic for a total of 777 IRs (1048 in the paid version)
  • Uncompromising signal chain that won’t add undesirable color to your sound. Bryston 4B -> Cab -> Mic -> Neve 1073 or Earthworks 1022 -> Prism Orpheus.
  • Edited for better phase coherence allowing you to mix multiple IRs.

The Marshall 1960A/G12M cab is available as a free download (valid email address required).

Native Instruments Abbey Road 80s Drums, Kontakt-based drum instrument

Native Instruments Abbey Road 80s Drums

Native Instruments has announced the release of Abbey Road 80s Drums, the third instrument developed together with the iconic British recording studios.

ABBEY ROAD 80s DRUMS contains two characteristic instruments that significantly contributed to the sound of the respective musical decade – a vintage Yamaha 9000, one of the most groundbreaking and mostrecorded kits in music history, and a Slingerland Magnum Chrome with single-headed concert toms and a full set of Octobans, the melodically tuned tubular toms that were popular among drummers of that time.
Both drum kits were set up and sampled with painstaking precision in Abbey Road’s Studio Two and Studio Three, taking full advantage of the acoustic properties of these famous recording rooms.

ABBEY ROAD 80s DRUMS features an especially sophisticated implementation of the typical “gated reverb” technique that enabled the distinctive huge-but-tight drum sound of the 80s. Different sets of ambient microphones were used at Abbey Road to capture additional, strongly compressed versions of the room sound, including a mono overhead signal recorded through a STC 4021 “Ball and Biscuit” microphone and a specially built replica of the SSL E-Series talkback compressor, utilizing a further popular recording trick of that time.

Selected Neve preamps, an analog 2-inch tape machine and other exclusive outboard gear further contribute to the genuine, powerful sound character of ABBEY ROAD 80s DRUMS. Up to 27 velocity layers per instrument, each with up to six additional variation samples, guarantee maximum authenticity both for rhythm programming and for real-time MIDI-controlled playing. The highly functional user interface offers convenient control over all articulation, sound shaping, mixing and routing functions, with envelopes and volume of the gated ambience individually adjustable per instrument group. Advanced randomization can even add subtle nuances to the tone and timing to make it virtually indistinguishable from a studio-recorded drum performance.

Abbey Road 80s Drums is available for purchase in the NI Online Shop on DVD and as a download for $119 USD / 99 EUR.

FXpansion releases BFD Heavy

FXpansion BFD Heavy

FXpansion has announced the release of BFD Heavy, a BFD2 expansion pack containing a pair of immaculately recorded Yamaha birch drumkits, supplied with a set of presets perfect for heavy rock, metal and other styles that require powerful, weighty drums.

The Recording Custom is the kit that signalled Yamaha’s arrival as one of the dominant forces in the world of drumming. This all-time classic birch kit comprises 2 powerful kicks, played with felt and wood beaters, alongside 4 toms featuring superb attack and sustain, and played with sticks. The Birch Custom Absolute, meanwhile, is the culmination of Yamaha’s 25 years of experience in crafting birch shells. Offering a great alternative to maple, birch shells feature excellent mid and low end, with a sharp and vibrant attack. The 5 toms are played with sticks and mallets, while the kick is provided in wood and felt beater versions.

A bonus ‘lite’ Yamaha Jimmy Chamberlin signature snare is provided to complement the kits. This steel-shell snare is provided in 4 versions played with sticks and mallets, with the snare strainer on and off. Full-detail versions of this snare are available in the Yamaha Signature Snares vol.2 expansion pack.

BFD Heavy’s expressive articulations include rim shots and rim clicks on the Birch Custom Absolute toms, while the bonus snare kit-pieces feature half-edge samples for expressive programming and electronic drums positional sensing support. The recording sessions took place at Omega Studios in Maryland, USA, using premium mics and preamps by Neumann, ATI, Neve, API and Violet, amongst others. Recording conditions were identical to those for other Yamaha-based downloadable expansions and the BFD Jazz & Funk, Percussion, B.O.M.B. and JEX libraries. BFD Heavy is also designed to sound great with BFD2′s built-in sounds as well as with BFD-compatible libraries recorded in other locations.

BFD Heavy features

  • Low-cost, download-only expansion pack for BFD2
  • 3 Kicks played with felt and wood beaters
  • 9 Toms variously played with sticks and mallets
  • Bonus snare with strainer on and off, played with sticks and mallets
