NUGEN Audio donates VisLM licenses to 41 NaSTA Student Stations

NUGEN Audio has announced that it has supplied licenses of its VisLM loudness metering plug-in to 41 student television stations throughout the U.K.

Nugen Audio VisLM

All members of the National Student Television Association (NaSTA), the student stations will use the plug-ins to help them comply with the European Broadcasting Union’s EBUR128 loudness recommendations, and also as a training tool for students to gain loudness monitoring experience in preparation for professional careers.

“People usually think of television as a visual medium, but they are more likely to notice flawed audio. Therefore, it’s critical that broadcast sound be flawless, not only to meet regulations but also to provide the best possible experience for viewers,” said Mitchell Perry, NaSTA marketing officer. “With its generous sponsorship, NUGEN Audio is giving our student members an opportunity that is simply not available in most of the U.K.’s television production courses: a chance to learn about loudness management and how to edit sound according to industry standards. After working with VisLM, students will be able to add another valuable skill to their CVs and increase their employability.”

VisLM is an intuitive, standard-compliant tool for measuring, comparing, and contrasting loudness during production, broadcast, post-production, and quality assurance, on the fly or after the fact, for entire sections of audio. With detailed, objective loudness measurement, history, and logging facilities, VisLM supports ITU, ATSC, EBU, and Game Audio standards to ensure loudness compliance for titles to be distributed virtually anywhere in the world.

NaSTA distributed the VisLM licenses to student stations throughout its network in Scotland, England, and Wales. VisLM is in use daily by on-campus television stations to create and edit programs ranging from major events and sports matches to coverage of student elections.

“For more than 40 years, NaSTA has played a lead role in supporting, promoting, and representing student television in the U.K.,” said Jon Schorah, founder and creative director, NUGEN Audio. “It is our pleasure to assist NaSTA in this effort, and it’s gratifying to know that our technology is helping these future television professionals develop the skills they need to be successful.”

NUGEN Audio releases Visualizer 2 analysis suite

NUGEN Audio has announced the release of version 2 of Visualizer, an update to the audio analysis suite and real-time comparison toolset designed for high-end audio professionals.

NUGEN Audio Visualizer

Ideal for music mixing and mastering as well as audio post-production, Visualizer provides comprehensive audio analysis for recording, mixing, and mastering in a single tool — now available as a plug-in or a stand-alone version. The standardized reference set of professional tools is designed to help audio engineers work faster, avoid mistakes, repeat past successes, and leverage the success of others. With version 2, Visualizer features numerous user interface enhancements in response to customer input, and is now available in a version supporting Avid Pro Tools HDX as well as a stand-alone configuration.

“Visualizer version 2 demonstrates our ongoing commitment to our thousands of existing users, as well as the Avid community, by including many highly requested user interface features and the latest techniques for comparative audio analysis and usability. In fact, this version is our first Pro Tools HDX plug-in,” said Jon Schorah, founder and creative director, NUGEN Audio. “Through more flexible use of display real estate and more robust diagnostic power, Visualizer is now the most powerful single analysis tool on the market. Engineers can access precisely the information they need, when they need it, and with no unnecessary clutter.”

Visualizer Version 2 now includes a fully resizable interface, enabling users to set up the exact screen configuration to suit their individual workflows. A new multiview feature enables engineers to compare multiple sources using a single plug-in, and a new difference view shows the contrast of two input signals. Visual “solo” controls for all views enable rapid switching to full screen mode and highly efficient in-depth investigation of individual analysis views.

In addition, Visualizer now includes a moveable vectorscope boundary to further enhance view configuration, and a new Correlation by Frequency view for analyzing how certain frequencies can affect correlation.

Visualizer now works with the NUGEN Audio “Send” plug-in to allow two sources to be overlaid or compared, for example, to reveal differences clearly before or after the mastering chain or for notching out.

With version 2, Visualizer is available as a stand-alone application that works outside of the DAW/NLE environment. Visualizer version 2 is also available in a hybrid HDX version designed for power users of Pro Tools HDX systems.

Visualizer 2 is available for purchase for MSRP $199 USD (native) / $249 USD (Pro Tools HDX). A free upgrade is available for customers within the 3-month grace period. Other existing users may upgrade for $99 USD, or for $149 USD to upgrade to the Pro Tools HDX Version.

Steinberg VST3

NUGEN Audio has announced that its entire family of professional audio plug-ins is now compliant with Steinberg’s Virtual Studio Technology 3 (VST3) standard. Moving forward, all future releases of NUGEN Audio’s plug-ins will be VST3-compatible.

“With VST3, Steinberg is providing a technological and creative basis for many innovative and exciting new products for the audio industry and opening up a new world of creative possibilities for instrument and effects plug-in users,” said Simon Kerr, chief marketing officer, NUGEN Audio. “By porting our entire range of plug-ins to VST3, we’re once again demonstrating our ongoing commitment to supporting the latest professional audio formats and standards. With VST3, NUGEN Audio is supporting users of Steinberg products with the most seamlessly compatible and innovative audio tools on the market, as well as an assurance of ongoing VST3 compatibility into the future.”

With VST, Steinberg established one of the world’s leading and most widely supported standards for plug-ins and virtual instruments in 1996. With this latest major revision, VST3 marks an important milestone in audio technology with a completely rewritten code base that provides the most stable and reliable VST platform to date, as well as a range of new features.

“NUGEN Audio is well-known for its highly innovative plug-ins and tools for audio professionals, and its products are perfect candidates for VST3 certification,” said Timo Wildenhain, product marketing manager at Steinberg. “The NUGEN Audio plug-in family is the ideal combination of leading-edge technology and rich functionality that we had in mind.”

NUGEN Audio’s Visualizer provides robust audio analysis capabilities for quality audio production, with a standardized reference set of tools that let audio professionals work faster, avoid mistakes, repeat past successes, and understand the success of others. Visualizer’s unique intelligent window facility lets users select multiple view combinations, automatically resizing and aligning windows to maximize legibility and cross-referencing information across screens.

Visualizer and NUGEN Audio’s other VST3-compatible products are available now.

NUGEN Audio intros MasterCheck loudness tool

NUGEN Audio MasterCheck

At the 137th AES Convention, NUGEN Audio is celebrating 10 years of service to the music and audio post-production communities by introducing MasterCheck, the first modern loudness tool for the music industry, as well as a significant update of Visualizer, the company’s industry-leading audio analysis tool.

MasterCheck is the first music-industry-specific audio plug-in designed to facilitate mix and mastering for the modern world of loudness normalized playout. iTunes®, Spotify®, and DAB Radio all now use loudness normalization, and MasterCheck reveals how the consumer will hear audio on these music platforms, and others, by using internationally recognized loudness, dynamics, and true-peak standards. Ideal for every aspect of music production including recording, mixing, mastering, compilation, archive, and restoration, MasterCheck can also be used for producing podcasts at optimal loudness levels for dialog clarity within the listener environment. With MasterCheck, audio engineers can employ a single plug-in to apply loudness matching and dynamic content analysis, using techniques such as peak-to-loudness ratio (PLR) to compare multiple sources. The advanced side-chain loudness matching can also be used to audition signal paths, without the “improvement” of increased loudness, to understand precisely how various effects, such as compression, can change the sound with no influence from the loudness enhancement.

Version 2 of Visualizer is the latest incarnation of NUGEN Audio’s audio analysis suite designed for high-end music professionals. Ideal for music mixing and mastering, as well as audio post-production, Visualizer provides comprehensive audio analysis for recording, mixing, and mastering in a single plug-in. A standardized reference set of professional tools is designed to help audio engineers work faster, avoid mistakes, repeat past successes, and understand the success of others.

Based on customer feedback, Visualizer now features numerous user interface enhancements including a fully resizable interface, a multiview feature that enables engineers to compare multiple sources with a single plug-in, and a difference view showing the difference between two input signals. Visualizer is available in a version supporting Avid Pro Tools | HDX, as well as a stand-alone application version.

At AES137, NUGEN Audio will preview a new upmix process specifically designed for film and TV production. Capable of producing a downmix-compatible upmix with optional dialog isolation in the center channel, the new technology is projected to be available in early 2015.

NUGEN Audio unveils key loudness management innovations & celebrates 10-year anniversary at IBC2014

At the IBC2014 show in Amsterdam, NUGEN Audio is celebrating a decade of service to the film and broadcast community by showcasing several innovations in its line of industry-leading post-production and broadcast audio tools.

NUGEN Audio DynAptT for LMB

The centerpiece is the company’s groundbreaking new DynAptT dynamic adaptation technology for loudness-compliant audio repurposing, now available as an extension for NUGEN Audio’s Loudness Management Batch (LMB) Processor. In addition, NUGEN Audio is introducing a new version of LMB Processor’s MXF Extension with DPP AS-11 compatibility.

Also at IBC2014, NUGEN Audio will feature version 1.1 of MultiMonitor, its powerful loudness and true-peak monitoring software application, and will preview its upcoming technology for stereo-to-5.1/7.1/9.1 upmixing in film and television production.

NUGEN Audio’s LMB Processor, an offline file-based batch loudness analysis and correction program for high throughput applications, is the first product to feature the company’s new DynApt technology. DynApt addresses the challenges of repurposing theatrical content to TV in the context of full loudness compliance, giving audio engineers a new option for adapting the content in a fast and efficient manner that completely preserves dialogue clarity. DynApt provides similar breakthrough benefits when adapting TV content for mobile streaming, or any other application that requires adapting dynamics accurately to the constraints of the delivery system. Working much faster than real-time, DynApt adapts dynamic audio appropriately for different listening environments and playout systems, while respecting the level of dialog in the original mix and meeting specific loudness criteria.

LMB Processor’s MXF Extension is the first NUGEN Audio product set to receive DPP AS-11 certification, a result of the company’s participation in the Digital Production Partnership (DPP) compliance program. Making its IBC debut, the MXF Extension introduces native MXF audio-handling that enables LMB Processor to perform automated analysis and correction of audio within an MXF container while preserving all other data within the file.

Ideal for loudness playout monitoring in master control rooms and outside broadcasting operations, MultiMonitor version 1.1 includes usability and logging improvements to enhance the postmortem and compliance record, so that data can be reviewed later if the need arises. MultiMonitor now offers individual logging for up to 16 individual loudness and true-peak meters – a total of up to 96 mono, stereo, and 5.1 audio channels. With version 1.1 of MultiMonitor, each meter is individually network addressable, broadening the possible applications.

NUGEN Audio’s new Enterprise Solution Program offers a wide range of custom-coded applications that can be tailored to the specific needs of large-enterprise customers. The new program leverages NUGEN Audio’s experience delivering software-based loudness integrations in many large organizations worldwide, such as the BBC, ESPN, France Télévisions, VRT Belgium, and many others. Each custom enterprise solution can support multiple users and enable IT staff to centralize licensing across multiple machines, without having to juggle many unique license codes.

“For a decade, NUGEN Audio has been serving the needs of clients ranging from small, boutique post-production houses, to the world’s largest broadcast and production organizations. At IBC2014, attendees will see why NUGEN Audio continues to be the leading innovator for standards-based solutions that ease the burden of loudness compliance,” said Jon Schorah, founder and creative director, NUGEN Audio. “A great example is our new DynApt technology, which makes loudness compliance and repurposing faster and less expensive, with a better-quality result than other methods. And MultiMonitor now supports individual logging and network addressing for more loudness meters and more channels than any other solution.”

NUGEN Audio 10th Anniversary

In celebration of its 10 years of business, NUGEN Audio is now offering a 40% discount on its Loudness Toolkit, an industry-leading suite of loudness, true-peak metering, and correction tools including VisLM, ISL, and LM-Correct.
