Airpiano MIDI and OSC controller now available

Omer Yosha of Kesem Design has released the Airpiano, an innovative MIDI and OSC controller that allows the user to trigger invisible keys and faders in midair.

The airpiano is the first musical interface to introduce an intuitive and simple touch-free interaction. Many touch-free interfaces require users to stare at a display. The user’s hand gestures in 3D space then control elements on the screen. However, musicians and performers need to be able to play their instruments in a more free and intuitive way. The airpiano’s keys and faders are therefore not on the screen, but exactly there above the airpiano surface. The performer knows the position of each controller in the air, so no display is needed. Just like with a multitouch interface, the user triggers a virtual button exactly where it is, and the interaction becomes much more natural.

Airpiano features

  • Built from beautiful walnut wood, dark red acrylic glass and RoHS compliant components.
  • 8 infrared proximity sensors create up to 24 virtual keys and 8 virtual faders.
  • 40 LEDs provide easy orientation and visual feedback.
  • 1 momentary button allows switching between presets directly from the device.
  • ¼” connector for using an expression pedal or a foot switch.
  • Power 9Vdc.
  • USB 2.0.
  • Dimensions: 960 x 160 x 26 mm ; Weight: 2.8 kg.
  • Custom airpiano software for PC and Mac, which can send MIDI and Open Sound Control (OSC) messages to other software or hardware:
    • Create and save arrangement presets
    • Assign keys and faders with MIDI messages (OSC messages are sent automatically)
    • Assign keys with preset-load messages (allows loading presets directly from the device)
    • Set momentary button functionality
    • Set pedal / foot switch functionality (MIDI CC , Global Velocity or Preset Loader)

A limited number of Airpiano devices is now shipping for a reduced price of 1,099 EUR (EU) / 1,149 EUR (international). Prices include shipping.

Somascape HexaChrom

Somascape has released HexaChrom, a musical performance controller for iPad, enabling you to wirelessly play your OSC or MIDI electronic musical instruments — virtual instruments running on a laptop/desktop computer, or any hardware instruments attached to your laptop/desktop computer.

HexaChrom takes an alternative approach to the majority of MIDI keyboard controllers in that it uses an isometric note layout, where the notes are presented as a hexagonal matrix of keys. There are many such isometric layouts, though HexaChrom uses the Harmonic Table layout, which is a modern variation of the Tonnetz (tone network), devised by the famous mathematician Euler.

HexaChrom features

  • Isometric ‘harmonic table’ note layout keyboard, based on a 52-note matrix (just over 4 octaves).
  • Play simple chords with a single finger.
  • Consistent chord shapes irrespective of root key.
  • Octave transposition provides a total span of just over 7 octaves.
  • Dual view : Portrait mode offers a single 52-note matrix (easy play); Landscape mode has a 104-note dual matrix, with optional split channel operation.
  • Assignable controllers (sliders and buttons).
  • Connects wirelessly using the OSC protocol.
  • Automatic connection using bonjour, or manual connection when bonjour is not an option.
  • Using OSCulator (on a Mac) control any software or hardware MIDI synthesizer, sampler, drum machine, etc.
  • Multitouch interface.

HexaChrom for iOS 3.2 or higher is available to purchase for $3.99 USD.

Anything Honest Amos

Anything Honest has released version 1.1 of Amos, a MIDI instrument for the iPad.

Amos is a reactive MIDI iPad instrument. It sends MIDI notes through a USB MIDI interface or over a wireless network to trigger sounds from software synths, MIDI-capable hardware or desktop DAWs like GarageBand, ProTools and Live.

In Amos’s physics-simulated room, collisions between objects trigger MIDI notes. Up to three duration discs (half note, quarter note, eighth note) can be grabbed and thrown around the room. There are three 6-octave keyboards that can be configured via the Settings menu. When a disc strikes a keyboard key, it takes on that key‘s note value and emits that value for each collision until a new key is struck. Tilting the device controls the gravity in the room.

Changes in Amos v1.1

  • CoreMIDI Support.
  • Octave Start and Count Configuration.
  • MIDI Channel Select.
  • MIDI On/Off Toggle.
  • Bouncer Bar On/Off Toggle.

Amos for iPad is available to purchase for $2.99 USD.
