Patchpool intros Sonic Cinema for HALion 5

Patchpool Sonic Cinema

Patchpool has announced Sonic Cinema, a sound library for the HALion 5 instrument from Steinberg.

This sound library comprises dozens of cinematic soundscapes, evocative pads and musical textures designed for producing epic soundtracks, ambient music and anything that needs inspiring sonic ingredients beyond the ordinary.

Sonic Cinema also contains dark cinematic brass instruments made with/derived from sampled instruments like the sousaphone, trombone, euphonium and french horn which were exclusively recorded for this library, mainly in a dry studio environment. Some of the french horn recordings were conducted in a church.

The patches will combine HALions outstanding granular engine, the normal sampling mode and the very versatile synth module. Eight Macros and the Modwheel are programmed for each preset to enable the user to deeply interact with the sounds, some patches also use Aftertouch, Sphere-modulation, FlexPhrasers and keyswitches.

The library will be distributed as a protected HALion sound-archive for the sample content and tagged vst3-presets.

The soundset will comprise ~100 presets (2.5 to 3GB of samples) and is scheduled for release in January 2014. A pre-order of the library is now available for 44 EUR, a 20% discount on the regular price of 55 EUR.

Patchpool releases MetaVox for Alchemy

Patchpool MetaVox

Patchpool has announced the release of MetaVox, a sound library for the Alchemy sample manipulation synthesizer by Camel Audio.

MetaVox for Alchemy is build around the exceptional overtone and throat singing of Gareth Lubbe, a true master of his craft. As Gareth is actually a professional orchestral viola player this library also contains several patches with viola sounds, the viola being a string instrument with a great resemblance to the human voice. During the recording session we also recorded duets of Gareth singing and playing the viola at the same time, these sample make for some more beautiful and wondrous sounds in Alchemy.

There are also patches with female vocals, using samples which were recorded during a recent session with Frauke Albert, a renown German vocalist (soprano), working mainly in the field of contemporary music.

As an additional string instrument some sounds also use violin samples, another instrument which has a very voice-like character and blends beautifully with the vocals sounds in this library.

MetaVox features

  • 1.8 Gigabyte of original samples (wav) and resynthed files (.aaz).
  • 56 patches with 8 variations each in Alchemy’s Remix Pad, all Performance Controllers and both x/y-pads are assigned for each patch.
  • All samples in this library were recorded with 3 Neumann microphones in L-C-R in 48 Khz/24 Bit, a U87 as the center mic – a stereo set of KM 184 for L-R.
  • Requires full version of Alchemy (version 1.55 and higher). It does not work with the Alchemy player version.

MetaVox is available to purchase for 36 EUR.

Patchpool introduces MetaVox for Alchemy

Patchpool MetaVox

Patchpool has announced MetaVox, a sample library for the Alchemy sample manipulation instrument by Camel Audio.

MetaVox for Alchemy focusses on the exceptional overtone singing of Gareth Lubbe, a true master of his craft who recently became the first professor for overtone singing in Germany. As Gareth is actually a professional orchestral viola player this library also contains several patches with viola sounds, the viola being a string instrument with a great resemblance to the human voice. During the recording session we also recorded duets of Gareth singing and playing the viola at the same time, these sample will make for some more beautiful and wondrous Alchemy sounds.

There will also be several patches with female vocals using samples which were recorded during a recent session with Frauke Albert, a renown german vocalist (soprano), working mainly in the field of contemprary music.

As an additional string instrument I will also use some recently recorded violin samples, another instrument which has a very voice-like character and blends beautifully with the vocals sounds in this library.

Besides using the original vocal and string samples (and resynthed derivatives thereof) for making the Alchemy patches, I am fascinated in the microcosmic interior of harmonics, so I am producing quite a few electronic derivatives of the samples, created by e.g. detaching the harmonics from the root note, then deleting the root note only leaving the harmonics which are then furtherly processed, timestretched, spectralized, tuned to a tempered scale and more.

The MetaVox library is scheduled for release on September 9th, 2013. It is available to pre-order for 28 EUR (20% off regular 35 EUR).

Review: Patchpool Diversity for Diversion

I am always excited to see what Simon Stockhausen of Patchpool can do when he gets his fingers on a new synthesizer plug-in. After hearing some of the teaser sound clips, I knew the Diversion soundset for the Diversion synthesizer plug-in by Dmitry Sches was going to be good.

Patchpool Diversity

Diversity includes a total of 101 patches and 6 variations. Simon aimed to create a wide range of diverse sounds…

… reaching from mellow and beautiful bells, pads, textural instruments and expressive lead sounds to edgy and soaring sequences and synths to dark and mysterious drones and soundscapes to otherworldly and abstract textures.

The patches use many custom waveforms made with Diversion and other sources. The sounds of this set were designed to be expressive, featuring complex modulations and x/y morph parameter assignments & aftertouch for more dynamic and expressive playing.

A breakdown of the patch categories:

  • 9 Bell & Plucks + 1 variation
  • 21 Keys & Synths
  • 19 Pads + 2 variations
  • 29 Scapes & Drones + 2 variations
  • 23 Sequencers + 1 variation

For each of the patches there is a description and/or insights into how the x/y, aftertouch, velocity etc. can be used to control the sounds.

Some of the patches use quite a lot of CPU. Simon recommends reducing polyphony or switching off the unison mode while tracking (and turn it back on for the render). Diversion does some high quality sounds, and I’m more than happy to work around some of the CPU issues until I get a better CPU.

While checking out the sounds I got inspired to do a little piece of music. The sound clip below is made with 5 instances of Diversion, only using patches from the Diversity soundset.

I only spent about 15 minutes from start to render so I didn’t spend much time on the mix and just slapped on a gentle compression on the master. No other processing was done.

For more elaborate examples of the sounds of Diversity, make sure to check Simon’s demos.

So what do I think?

Product: Diversity by Patchpool
Format: patches for Dmitry Sches Diversion
Price: 25 EUR
Like: Well designed, cinematic sounds. Detailed patch info.
Don’t like: –
Verdict: 9/10

For a synthesizer as good as Diversion, it’s a bit of a shame there are only so few soundsets available for it. I guess there is a smaller market than for Massive, Sylenth1 and the likes, but luckily Patchpool supports the lesser known plug-in developers.

Diversity offers a most wonderful collection of sounds, beautifully designed by seasoned composer and sound designer Simon Stockhausen. With his signature cinematic style, Simon’s sounds are great for soundtracks and ambient music. They are ready to use out of the box, all you need to do is be inspired by them.

If you had a listen to the demos you undoubtedly heard that these sounds are designed in a way that when played alongside one or two other patches, or even individually, they are completely musical, expressive and generally totally mesmerizing. You just get completely immersed in the sounds, what inspiration!

Patchpool releases The Vase for Alchemy

Patchpool The Vase for Alchemy

Patchpool has announced the release of The Vase, a sound library for Camel Audio Alchemy, containing 15 patches made entirely from a multisampled vase using unprocessed samples for beautiful and delicate mallet-like instruments and processed, spectralized and metasynthed samples for pads, synths, soundscapes and otherworldly noises.

The vase was played with soft mallets, hitting it at the top, bottom and side, recording 10 variations for each hit (10x Round Robin). It was also played with the hand for claydrum-like sounds (9xRR), it was rubbed with a drumstick, it was filled with water for nice drips and drops and it was resynthed to create keyboard-like instruments.

All vase samples were recorded with 3 Neumann microphones in L-C-R in 48 Khz/24 Bit, a U87 as the center mic – a stereo set of KM 184 for L-R.

As in all my soundsets for Alchemy I make extensive use of Alchemy’s complex modulation possibilities and filters, often intermodulating LFOs/MSEGs/Sequencers with each other and assigning numerous parameters to a single Controller. This enables the user to deeply interact with the sounds and shape it according to his needs and preferences. Also the patches can serve as a starting point for the user’s own creations when loading new samples into them and then using the pre-assigned Controllers and Snapshots in the Remix Pad.

The Vase for Alchemy is available to purchase for 11 EUR. Requires the full version of Alchemy.
