reFuse Software The Swarm

reFuse Software has released version 0.3.1 of The Swarm, a free drone synthesizer inspired by The Swarmatron.

Since the initial release of The Swarm, just five days ago, we’ve seen an extremely positive user response. For an obscure type of synth, not playable by traditional (keyboard-controlled) means, the number of downloads has been surprisingly high. And those download numbers have only come from OS X users… until now!

We are pleased to announce the immediate availability of The Swarm for Windows.

Changes in The Swarm v0.3.1

  • Fixed a glitch with the MIDI mapping for the fine control of the Span.
  • Fixed window size and layout to allow use on smaller laptop screens [v0.3]
  • Added Pitch Center control [v0.3]
  • Added Waveform control [v0.3]
  • Added all-on/all-off oscillator switching (by Shift-clicking) [v0.3]
  • Improved preset system [v0.3]
  • Fixed oscillator initializer routine at startup [v0.2]
  • Added Hints [v0.2]
  • Added pitch wheel control, mappable to Base Pitch or Span [v0.2]

The Swarm is now available as a freeware application for Mac and Windows.

reFuse Software The Swarm

reFuse Software has released The Swarm, a drone synthesizer inspired by The Swarmatron, a handmade synthesizer from Dewanatron.

It was the Swarmatron that created many of the buzzing clouds of anxiety-provoking noise used by Trent Reznor in his Oscar-winning score for “The Social Network”.

Since we were curious what it would be like to play such an instrument, yet didn’t have the $3200 laying around, we thought we’d build something like it in software, and share it with you.

The Swarm is available as a standalone application for Mac OS X. Note: the audio output of the The Swarm may be sent to ReWire-compatible host applications.

reFuse Software updates Note2Frequency to v0.4

reFuse Software Note2Frequency

reFuse Software has released version 0.4 of Note2Frequency, a free note-to-frequency conversion utility for Mac.

Note2Frequency is a utility program to convert note names to their frequencies. Press a note on the on-screen keyboard, and it gives you the frequency of that note in cycles per second (Hz). It will also play a sine wave as a reference tone.

Now with version 0.4, Note2Frequency will also go the other way, converting frequencies in Hz to notes! A readout for “cents” was therefore added by necessity, to show where between two notes a given frequency lies.

Changes in Note2Frequency v0.4

  • Now also converts frequencies in Hz to notes.
  • Added MIDI Note and Musical Note display/controls.
  • Added label for Middle C.
  • Changed startup state to have Middle C selected.
  • Misc interface improvements.

Note2Frequency for Mac OS X is available as a free download from the reFuse website.

reFuse Software releases Polarizer

reFuse Software Polarizer

reFuse Software has released Polarizer, a free plug-in which allows you to flip the signal polarity in your DAW.

The Polarizer flips signal polarity (misnomered often as “phase”). That’s it.

Why should you care, when so many plug-ins already include a polarity switch in them? Well, because so many DAWs do not include a polarity switch right on their mixers. This means that, instead of being able to try different polarities with ONE click of the mouse, you must open some random plug-in, hunt for the polarity switch, and then hit it.

The idea of the Polarizer is to effectively add a polarity switch to any DAW mixer. If the Polarizer is on, it’s flipping polarity. If it’s in Bypass, it’s not.

Polarizer is available as a freeware Pluggo plug-in for Mac.
