Ohm Force has announced the Remix Cohmpetition 2010, a music production contest with $4,000 USD in prizes.
The track to be remixed is “Stride”, the new release from talented american progressive house producer/DJ Derek Howell (check out his MySpace profile or take a look at his discography at Discogs).
What the contestants will have to do is pretty simple: go to the Cohmpetition’s page at our blog, listen to the original track, download the sample pack, use Ohm Force’s Frohmage filter and/or Symptohm:Melohman Performer Edition synth (both are freeware!) when producing their remix and… show their talent to the world! The submissions should be sent until February 28th 2010, the 3 winners will be chosen by the Ohm Force and Derek himself and the final result will be announced at the beginning of March. Shall the best win!
Remix Cohmpetition 2010 prizes include products by Ohm Force, Camel Audio, Sample Magic, and Muse Research, who will be offering a Receptor 2 to the 1st place winner.

Laptoprockers has announced a Remix Contest with Psytrance pioneers Eat Static.
Featuring a drum & bass track, a rock ballad and a synth-pop song in previous remix contests, this time Laptoprockers have joined forces with pioneers of psytrance ‘Eat Static’ to offer remixers two great tracks to play around with. ‘Sin Quest’ is an upbeat dance track with a classic psytrance feel, while ‘Up Periscope’ explores the more downtempo psychedelic avenues. The tracks are off Eat Static’s two most recent albums, De-Classified and Back To Earth.
“Both tracks unmistakeably carry Eat Static’s signature sound and make up for great remix material,” Laptoprockers said. “And as it is the first time Eat Static source material is available from the Internet in a remix contest, this unique opportunity caters for something extra. We’ll have winners for each remix track, and the best overall remix will get a very special bonus.”
As on earlier occasions, Laptoprockers offer a generous prize pool for this remix contest. LinPlug donated six of their best plug-in synthesizers for you to win! “Three prizes for each remix track is only adequate,” LinPlug commented on their contribution, “so each track will have three separate winners.” Prizes include LinPlug’s all in one drum solution RMV, their sample mangling plug-in ChronoX, and FM Synth Octopus and represent over $900 total value.
But there’s more at stake! The icing on the cake comes with a bonus for the best remixer overall. “We definitely will be able to release the best remix,” Eat Static’s Merv Pepler revealed, “we have several options in the coming months for that.” Need say more?
The contest deadline is January 02, 2010.

Some interesting things I found recently:
# Tactile Metronome – Wayne and Layne
The Tactile Metronome is a tap-controlled metronome and "beat looper." "Syncopation machine." "Metronome with an attitude."
You tap the piezo speaker to set the frequency. The display shows the beats per minute, and the two buttons adjust the speed.
"Ehhh." "Boring," you say. Not so fast!
You can tap patterns into it, currently up to 12 beats long. As long as you tap the pattern in three times, it jumps in and continues beeping in that rhythm. The metronome can beep in three different tones, so you can play with more than one at a time.
Tactile Metronome features
- Easy to assemble kit makes for a great learning experience. All parts are easy-to-solder through-hole, with no tiny surface mount parts.
- Fully open-source design means that everything is freely available and ready to be hacked, including the circuit schematic, PCB layout, part list, and microcontroller firmware.
- Piezoelectric speaker is used as the pattern input, by simply tapping in the tempo or pattern. Once the metronome learns your pattern, it starts beeping with the same piezo element.
- Seven-segment displays provide feedback in the form of beats-per-minute (BPM) readings.
- Custom, professionally-made PCB provides a solid base for happy tappers. All circuit connections are routed on two layers without the use of vias, reducing confusion while assembling.
- A Pre-programmed Microcontroller means you don’t need a specialized microcontroller programmer to get started with the Tactile Metronome. If you want to experiment with modifying the firmware, an in-circuit serial programming (ICSP) header is provided to enable easy re-programming.
# Stereoklang – Reason Refills – We have been collecting free or demo Reason Refills for over 7 years and of course we are happy to share them with the rest of the world.
All Reason Refills you will find on this site are non-pirated this means that they are free to use in your music production, however we of course encourage you to visit the orginal sites for more information where available.
# Circuit bending work station
Matt the modulator built a deluxe substitution box for experimenting with different resistor & capacitor values for circuit bending.
Circuit bending work station
- Resistance pots (4k7, 100k, 1m).
- Capacitance – 12 caps selector poly 47-pf, 100-pf, 470-pf, 1-nf, 4n7 nf, 10-nf, 100nf, 1-uf, 1uf elec 1uf, 4.7uf, 10uf, 100uf.

Laptoprockers has announced “The Rat” remix contest, featuring a track by one of America’s hottest new rock bands: Dead Confederate.
Originally a high school band, Dead Confederate is spreading a new breed of dark, raw, mind-blowing psych-rock from their Athens based headquarters. “As much as we have a love for electronic music and good remixes, we aren’t exactly skilled at it. This is where you come in. We want to hear your best remix of The Rat. Take as much or as little liberty with it as you want. No style is off limits. Be bold and make it your own.”
The Rat is the first single off Dead Confederate’s highly acclaimed 2008 debut album “Wrecking Ball.”
With their previous contests Laptoprockers started making waves as a serious remix contest website. “We’re always looking for tracks with an edge. We had a synth-pop track featuring an original Kraftwerk member in our last contest, and a track by a Drum and Bass legend before that. So we thought a Rock track would be a nice next challenge for remixers. The Rat is has a lot of remix potential. We’re proud to have Dead Confederate on board.”
Submit your entry before the deadline of June 21st, 2009 for a chance to win one of the three Rob Papen virtual synths in the prize pot. Dead Confederate, contest contestants and Laptoprockers will each choose one winners.
Visit Laptoprockers for more information.
