Native Instruments announces TRAKTOR REMIXED – free updates, all-new pricing, and more

Native Instruments Traktor Remixed

Native Instruments has announced TRAKTOR REMIXED, a comprehensive revision of the TRAKTOR range to coincide with the imminent arrival of TRAKTOR PRO 2.5.

Due for release on May 30th – the same day as the TRAKTOR KONTROL F1 add-on controller – TRAKTOR PRO 2.5 is the catalyst for many important changes in the TRAKTOR portfolio that aim to simplify the TRAKTOR product range for DJs.

Free updates for TRAKTOR PRO 2 and TRAKTOR DUO 2 users

All users of TRAKTOR PRO 2 and TRAKTOR DUO 2 will receive a free update to the latest PRO 2.5 software as soon as it is available. The updated software version introduces the innovative Remix Decks™, which allow DJs to creatively remix and rearrange tracks before and during their actual performance. As of today, users of TRAKTOR DUO 2 and TRAKTOR SCRATCH DUO 2 will receive a free upgrade to TRAKTOR PRO 2.

TRAKTOR PRO 2 software comes free with every TRAKTOR hardware

From today onwards, every TRAKTOR hardware item will automatically come with the latest full TRAKTOR PRO 2 version free of charge, which can then be comfortably updated to PRO 2.5 on its release. This applies to all TRAKTOR audio interfaces, controllers and scratch systems and is especially attractive to new customers. TRAKTOR PRO 2 previously retailed for $229/199 EUR and is now available with the TRAKTOR AUDIO 2 interface, for instance, for just $119/99 EUR.

Special upgrade offer for old TRAKTOR versions

Users still running pre-PRO 2 versions of TRAKTOR software can upgrade to the latest version, thanks to a time-limited offer. Owners of software-only versions (TRAKTOR 1 to 3, TRAKTOR PRO and TRAKTOR DUO), as well as DJs using TRAKTOR SCRATCH, TRAKTOR SCRATCH PRO or TRAKTOR SCRATCH DUO, can update to the latest version for $44,50/39,50 EUR until April 30th 2012.

Changes to audio interfaces and scratch systems

The audio interfaces TRAKTOR AUDIO 10 and TRAKTOR AUDIO 6 are now exclusively available with their respective digital vinyl systems. TRAKTOR SCRATCH A10 (renamed from TRAKTOR SCRATCH PRO 2), features the 10-channel interface, and is now available at the new price of $559/499 EUR. Similarly, TRAKTOR SCRATCH A6 (previously called TRAKTOR SCRATCH DUO 2), contains the 6-channel TRAKTOR AUDIO 6 and can now be purchased for $339/299 EUR.

New pricing for other products

This “remix” of the TRAKTOR range also means permanent new price points for a number of products. The TRAKTOR PRO 2 software can now be purchased at the NI Online Shop for $89/79 EUR (previously $229/199 EUR), while TRAKTOR KONTROL S2 now costs $559/499 EUR.

Kmag launches Blu Mar Ten Remix Competition

Kmag Blu Mar Ten Remix Competition

Kmag has announced the Blu Mar Ten Remix Competition, a chance to win a release on the Love is the Devil remix project.

Blu Mar Ten formed in the 90s in the infancy of Drum & Bass, and have since produced a plethora of deep, atmospheric creations. Not surprisingly, they have been in high demand as remix artists for the likes of Erykah Badu, Alicia Keys, Annie Lennox, Terry Lee Brown and Joey Negro.

Kmag, Blu Mar Ten, Soundcloud, Surus, Loopmasters and Finyltweek have joined forces to give you the opportunity to remix ‘All Or Nothing’ from their latest album ‘Love is the Devil’, which made it to number 4 in Kmag’s 10 Best Drum & Bass Album 2011. The winning entry will receive a release alongside remixes from dBridge, Marcus Intalex, BCee, Joe Syntax, Unquote and Blu Mar Ten, as part of the Love is the Devil remix project.

“We want people to take the idea and make it their own,” says Chris from Blu Mar Ten. “Really stretch the track and do something different to it. We want to hear some character and invention.”

The winner will also win a SoundCloud pro account, 2GB of free Loopmasters sample packs and £100 to spend in the Surus music platform. One runner-up and the group choice winner (the entry in the group that is favorited the most) will win a SoundCloud Lite account, a free Loopmasters sample pack and £50 to spend in the Surus music platform.

Deadline for entries is midnight GMT on Sunday February 26th 2012.

Winter 2011 Sample Remix Contest: Expectations

Winter 2011 Sample Remix Contest - Expectations

I have been planning to do another music production contest for a while now, but moving house and having a new addition to the family meant I have had very little spare time. So I am pleased to still get things going before the turn of the year.

The theme for the contest is “Expectations“. With 2012 around the corner I think it should be a good inspiration.

The idea of this “sample remix” contest is to create a song using the sample pack created specifically for this contest. No other instruments (virtual or real) are allowed, no samples, recordings, or other sound sources. Just the samples in the contest pack.

I know this is quite a limitation, but hopefully one that will spark your creativity.

All the sounds in the contest sample pack were made exclusively with Rob Papen plugins. I tried to provide a good variety of loops and sounds so you have something to work with.

The download includes a total of 120 samples (24bit/44kHz): 33 melodic loops and 87 single shot sounds (36 melodic, 41 perc & 10 sfx). The archive is in RAR format. If you experience difficulties opening this file you can try the slightly larger zip version here.

Expectations contest sample pack Downloads size: 84.42 MB

Note that the sample pack is *not* some kind of connect the dots construction kit so you are allowed (and encouraged) to chop the samples up, process them to bits with effects and make them your own.

The deadline for submitting your entry is January 16th, 2012, 11:59pm CET. Winners will be picked based on quality and originality. A few days later the winners will be announced.

Rob Papen Punch, Predator & SubBoomBass

So what can you win?

Since all the sounds you are going to work with were done with Rob Papen plug-ins I thought it would be fitting to have them as contest prizes as well.

I am pleased to say that Rob has generously donated the following prizes:

  • 1st prize: Punch, SubBoomBass and Predator
  • 2nd prize: SubBoomBass and Predator
  • 3rd prize: SubBoomBass

Many thanks to Rob for offering these great plugins!

Contest rules

  • You may only use the samples provided in the contest sample pack. No other sound sources are allowed. However, you may process and manipulate sounds any way you want. Get creative!
  • Submit your entry in mp3 format (minimum of 192kbit) per email to before January 16th, 2012, 11:59pm CET.
One entry per person is allowed, you will receive a confirmation of your submission.
  • Your entry should be composed specifically for this contest. By entering, you grant permission for your track to be published at the website, through SoundCloud.
  • Prizes will be granted at the discretion of the voting committee. There may be additional prizes for the runners-up.

Contest rules subject to change. If you have any questions feel free to contact me or comment on this post.

Contest entries

The submitted tracks will be listed here, ordered by date of entry.

Part 2:

Part 1:

The winners

I now remember why I prefer to let you guys pick the winners… There were so many great quality & original entries, it was almost impossible to narrow the shortlist of favorites down to just three.

Alas, in the end only a few can take away the prizes:

  1. Noizefield – Expect the Unexpected
  2. Crystal Craft – Prince Of Egypt
  3. David F (AKA Totolitoto) – Arithmetic mean

Thanks to everyone who took part in the contest. I hope you had a good time making music, and perhaps you will join us again next time.
