Some interesting things I found recently:

Arduino Piano

# Arduino Piano Squealer Synth

Marc Nostromo developed the Arduino Piano Squealer Synth for the Arduino Pocket Piano, an arduino shield produced by Critters and Guitari.

The engine implements a small monosynth with a few waveforms, a HP/BP/LP continuous resonant filter, decay and a few little own tricks that generate a LOT of aliases, making a great dirty digital synth. Since the Pocket Piano has only 3 potentiometers available for control (the 4th one being hardwired to the volume), I use a “page” system to implement series of 3 parameters to fiddle with. To switch “page”, use the rightmost note of the A.P (NOT the one under the led, the one left to to it). To help you know which page you are at, you can use the led: it will flash a number of time equivalent to the current page you are at.

The source code of the Arduino Piano Squealer synth is available under GPL License V3.

Some interesting things I found recently:

Johan Larsby Tentacle-box

# Tentacle-box, mobile musicstation with beatsynched lights.

Johan Larsby made himself a portable sound system so he can do shows wherever he goes.

It should be able to work without being connected to an outlet. It should have lights and it shouldn't be to heavy to move around. Ateast not by a small wagon. And it should be loud. Not Mötorhead loud but loud enough. It should also be cheap enough so that I would not cry if it got trashed or stolen after a few gigs/parties.

# Pluto

Pluto is a digital audio workstation demo implemented in a web browser – based on the raw audio capabilities of Microsoft Silverlight. In a nutshell:

  • 16 tracks with 32 voice polyphony plus 6 fx/track
  • Granular synthesizer, Karplus-Strong guitar synthesizer or drum-machine per each track
  • Highly optimized, multithreaded audio pipeline
  • MIDI import/export, WAV export
Stretta Z-DSP Experiments

# The Stretta Procedure: Z-DSP Experiments

Matthew Davidson writes:

I'm one of the lucky few beta testers of the new TipTop Audio Z-DSP eurorack module, and boy is it a lot of fun. The Z-DSP is a lot like the TipTop Audio Z5000, except embiggened. A lot. There are three CV controlled parameters per program. There is a feedback loop that you can tap into on the front panel so you can insert a filter or whatever module you can think of inside a part of the DSP process that is usually closed to tinkering. You can change the personality of the DSP by inserting a different card on the front panel. You can even voltage control the clock. This is serious sound-mangling mayhem.

The short audio files I produced represent only one patch idea using one program on one card on this module. I could spend a great deal of time exploring various options without even changing the DSP program on the Z-DSP. The fact that I could load another program is another whole world of possibilities. If, somehow you got bored of that, you can load a card with a different batch of programs. Egads, this thing is endless.

# In the Jungle – 17 Amazing Ableton Live Tutorials – Here are 17 tutorials coming from Ableton, Youtube and Audiotuts+. Most cover the current version of Live, but a few cover version 7 where the same techniques still apply.

# Pseudo scratching In Ableton Live 8

Video showing how to emulate a scratch-like effect in Ableton Live 8 using the new delay Modes available in the Ping Pong Delay. This is not meant to replace vinyl, nor will it produce a totally authentic sounding scratch sound, but it is a Ableton Live only solution and is a nice add on to your effects arsenal.

The template is available to download here.

# FREE Sample Pack #3: Yamaha DD-8

Bedroom Producers presents a new pack of samples:

Drum machines are cool. Toy drum machines are way cooler though. Is it the cheeziness of the samples or some strange drugs hidden under the pads, i’m not sure, but playing these old Yamaha drums has always been a great pleasure for me.

So in order to share some of the fun, here’s a free samplepack with all of the samples available in the machine, from kicks and snares to lions and scratches. Below is a quick and lame demo i made. Have fun!

improbably projects sonic ties

# recycled cassette tape thin necktie

sonic fabric neckties by improbable projects:

the sonic fabric neckties are a limited-edition project made in collaboration with my designer friend julio cesar. sonic fabric is woven from 50% recorded audio cassette tape and 50% colored thread the fabric is actually audible if you run a tape head over it! (if you’d like a demo, please visit my youtube channel at alyceobvious.

the idea behind the tie is that the wearer becomes a beacon for other-dimensional, intangible, subtle forces of good…much in the manner of a superhero. only this part of the superhero garb can be worn on the outside in the most conservative environment without detection! looks equally great with dress shirt or t-shirt. this tie is the thinner version – 2" wide at the widest point. i also make a slightly wider version for more mature audiences.

the sound collages recorded onto the tape for this batch of ties comes from my cd between stations, and is based on looped and layered samples collected on and under the streets of nyc.

Waveformless Neubauten

Some interesting things I found recently:

# Waveformless: Free Sample Friday: Metallic Hits
Tom Shear of Waveformless has a lovely collection of samples as a free download.

As a thanks to my readers, here are 30 metal hits all coming from the unlikely source of one of those gift tins of popcorn people give each other at the holidays. When emptied, it actually had a pretty nice sound to it.

I hit it with both my hand and a drum stick, both with the lid on and off. Most are straight hits, but when I was shuffling stuff around in my hands I'd occasionally get some kind of interesting rhythms, so there are a couple of those in there too just waiting to be warped and synced in Live (or Logic 9).

All samples are 24-bit/44.1k mono WAV files. Total download size is about 7 MB.

# Synthgeek free samples – Synthgeek has a nice collection of free wav samples, including the recently added TR-66 abuse 1 pack, featuring 18 sounds from a circuit-bent Roland TR-66.

Tara Busch on iPhone

# Have iPhone? Get The New, Free Tara Busch iPhone App!

Who doesn’t want Tara Busch on their iPhone?

Here's an utterly wonderfully, delightfully dork-a-licious app for you to add to your phone!

Designed by Rehan Fernando at phizuu, the application contains copious content designed by Maf Lewis (films and photos) and of course music by me including 3 free songs from my Tummy Touch Records debut, Pilfershire Lane.

You can also access AnalogSuicide.com and my latest tweets via your iPhone. Pretty Groovy, eh?

# JSNES: A Javascript NES emulator

Now you can play classic NES games in your brower with this nifty javascript NES emulator by Ben Firshman.

Ben writes:

A few months ago, I stumbled across Matt Westcott’s excellent JSSpeccy. I had seen some pretty imaginative canvas creations, but Javascript emulators? What a perfect idea for a daft new project.

I got underway shamelessly porting vNES into Javascript. Although not the most efficient, it didn’t have any of the pointer memory mapping magic associated with emulators written in lower level languages. As such, it was more or less a direct port, bar a few tweaks to compensate for the lack of static typing, and obviously a rewrite of all the I/O.

I highly recommend you use Google Chrome to play JSNES. Thanks to its high performance canvas element, and a clever optimisation by Connor Dunn, it runs at full speed on modern computers. Mac builds are also available. Otherwise, it just about runs on Firefox 3.5 or Safari 4, but it’s hardly playable.

Mark Mosher's They Walk Among Us

# The Making of The Electronica Single “They Walk Among Us” Using Ableton Live + VSTs

Mark Mosher of Modulate This! shows us how he created one of his tracks.

In this epic post I’m going to share some behind the scenes notes on what it took to compose the song “They Walk Among Us”.

If you have any friends who think that all us electronic musicians do is just drop canned loops and hit buttons, have them read this – of course they’ll have no idea what I’m talking about ;^).

Some interesting things I found recently:

# Toy Piano Rescue Project

Ranjit Bhatnager bought a toy piano on eBay, but it got damaged in transport.

For Awesome August I'm trying to make something of this ebay toy piano that got smashed by UPS. The music is Philip Glass's "Modern Love Waltz," inspired by toy pianist Margaret Leng Tan. (I used it previously)

Some interesting things I found recently:

Lennon Luks MIDI Controller/Sequencer

# MIDI Controller/Sequencer

Lennon Luks writes:

While I was earning my BS at Western Carolina University, one of the requirements was a Senior Design Project. For this project, I designed and constructed a MIDI controller/sequencer. I chose this as a project because I am a musician and I am very much interested in electronic music and electronic musical instruments/controllers. This project was ideal for me, as it allowed me to combine my passions for engineering and music.

# More samples — the hallway session samples

Chaircrusher has posted another batch of samples. Sounds include a screwdriver, steel thermos, spraypaint can, rubbermaid shelves, sheetrock wall, stair rail, wooden legs that used to hold up kitchen island, and some sniffing.

RocketScientist Marimba

# Build Your Own Marimba!

RocketScientist @ Instructables:

I am a mallet percussionist who loves the marimba. About four years ago I had a problem. Though I loved percussion, I had no way of practicing at home. There were cheap options. I could have bought a bell kit. But I hate the sounds they make. I wanted a very large five octave marimba but didn't have the money to simply purchase one (7000+ dollars). So I decided against all common sense I would build one.

# TrackTeam Audio Monomulator – Monomulator for APC40 & pK – Monome emulator for the Akai APC40 and Korg PadKONTROL. Free download, includes Max/MSP source files.

# OpenChord.org V1 – Build a Real Guitar Guitar Hero/Rock Band Controller

An Instructable for using a real guitar as your Guitar Hero controller.

We all love Guitar Hero and Rock Band. We also know that we'll never learn how to actually play guitar playing these games. But what if we could at least build a Guitar Hero controller that let us use a real guitar? That's what we here at OpenChord.org are trying to do.

Producer Loops releases MIN TECH 2

Producer Loops MIN TECH 2

Producer Loops has released MIN TECH 2, a 1.8 GB construction kit collection for the minimalist techno genre from their content partner Bunker 8 and that is the sequel of their popular MIN TECH.

Angling through empty souls of a minimalist calling, ‘MIN TECH’ becomes the defacto definition of the minimalist techno genre. Dark and forboding, deep and distrustful, glaring and majestic, Bunker 8 Digital Labs brings this heretofore style through its melodically haiku solace.

It is characterized by a stripped-down aesthetic that exploits the use of repetition, and understated development. This style of dance music production generally adheres to the motto less is more; a principle that has been previously utilized, to great effect, in architecture, design, visual art, and Western art music. Minimal techno is thought to have been originally developed in the early 1990s by Detroit based producers Robert Hood and Daniel Bell.

MIN TECH 2 features

  • 1.8 GB construction kits (Apple loops & Acid loops).
  • Each kit contains a full sample mix, plus all of the elements separated and set out for you to mix and match until the groove sits tight.
  • Also includes single hit samples selected from the best kits on offer at the Bunker 8, in HALion, Kontakt 2, Battery 2, Gigasampler, Soundfont, Sampletank, and EMU Formats.
  • Bonus collection of minimalist drum grooves and percussionisms, perfect as expressive appetizers to your minimalist opus.
  • Bunker 8 uses proprietary sample looping technology so that each cycle of either format seams perfectly throughout your jams. That means you can stretch these loops really far with limited or no digital artifacts.
  • All beats have been processed using Neve, Soundcraft and SSL consoles at the mixing stage, so you know these are ready to go.

MIN TECH 2 is available as a download for £18 GBP.

Visit Producer Loops for more information and audio demos.
