Stillwell Audio has announced the release of version 3 of its instrument and effect plug-ins for Windows and Mac.

Two years in the making, Version 3 means it’s finally time for Pro Tools users to experience the quality of everything we do at Stillwell Audio, and to enjoy the way we do it. Do you use a VST3 host? Ask no more, because now we’ve got you covered as well.

We have a new website (did you notice?) and *tada* please bid welcome to Broadsword, our newest developer. Of course, by ‘Everything’ we mean ‘not quite everything’, because PsychoDither is not quite up to V3 (stand by for that!) and ‘Microshope’ has been discontinued.

Stillwell Audio has announced the release of version 2.0 of all its plug-ins for Windows and Mac.

As developers of audio plugins, we concentrate on the senses…pristine sound along with functional user interfaces that invite you to use them. No cookie-cutter textbook DSP formulas with all the serial numbers filed off; we just write plugins that sound good.

Changes in Stillwell Audio plug-ins v2.0

  • All plug-ins now have Windows x64 versions.
  • Formal support for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.
  • Miscellaneous bug fixes for graphics and host handling.
  • New .dmg-based installer for Mac plug-ins.

Stillwell Audio has released Bombardier, a buss compressor effect plug-in for Windows and Mac.

Bombardier is our most ambitious project to date – a premium quality buss compressor, tailored for smooth and musical processing of complex audio such as drum groups, vocal stems and your full stereo mix, lending a controllable sense of weight, fluidity and cohesion.

Bombardier gives a nod to the non-linear and frequency-variant subtleties of a wide range of Grade-A hardware buss compressors, and should you wish these can be pushed almost into the realms of a character compressor.

Bombardier features

  • Due to its RMS compression engine, Bombardier is ideally suited to final mixdown and mastering usage, as well as for those who like to set up buss dynamics first and then mix ‘into’ the buss compressor.
  • New and unique ‘bomb’ processing algorithm which, when selected, gives attack and release settings that are effectively instantaneous while yielding exceptionally smooth gain reduction. Bomb mode is sure to become a firm favourite with mastering engineers the world over, but can also give extremely satisfying results in single track and buss applications.
  • Five different and highly effective pre-emphasis filter modes vary Bombardier’s response to the frequency spectrum and are key to preserving transparency during full-mix compression.
  • Very flexible, offering forward/feedback topologies, variable and automatic release behaviours, sidechain operation, parallel processing and variable gain reduction range limiting.
  • Choosing appropriate settings for the task at hand is critical to getting the best out of Bombardier, so a full range of well chosen presets are provided.

Bombardier is available to purchase as an effect plug-in for Windows and Mac (VST/AU) priced at $59 USD. A Reaper-only/non-commercial use license is available for $39 USD.

Schwa releases CMX

Schwa CMX

Schwa has released CMX, a stereo microshifter plug-in for Windows and Mac.

CMX thickens and enhances monophonic audio by doubling the signal and applying small amounts of pitch shift and/or time delay to each side.

This technique is often applied to vocals or lead lines. With a light hand, CMX can add just enough fullness to give a part extra presence in a mix. With a heavier hand, CMX can create a rich and polished “expensive production” sound. The added presence is especially effective in musical styles that make minimal use of reverb.

CMX uses a new, unique pitch identification and shifting algorithm from Schwa that is designed and optimized for small, precise pitch shifts, from one cent to a quarter-tone, with perfect phase coherence and maximum smoothness. You can use CMX on exposed, high-quality vocal tracks with complete confidence.

Schwa CMX is available for Windows and Mac (VST/AU) for $50 USD. A Reaper-only, personal use license is available for $30 USD.

Schwa updates schOPE to v1.50

Schwa at Stillwell Audio has released version 1.50 of schOPE, a multitool, multiview, multichannel waveform, frequency, and stereo phase analyzer that lets you superimpose and view multiple audio signals from every dimension.

Isolate and zoom in on exactly the part of the signal you want to see. Freeze the display and use the time offset knobs to visually scrub frequency changes.

schOPE v1.50 is easier to use, prettier, and lower CPU use.

All other Stillwell Audio plug-ins have been updated to v1.52.02 to fix an inadvertent “go-to-website” bug.

Stillwell Audio releases The Rocket & TinMan

Stillwell Audio has released The Rocket, a compressor effect, and TinMan by Schwa, a resonant filter effect.

The Rocket is a character audio compressor, singular in its extraordinary speed, responding in mere microseconds to variations in program level. Being in the order of several thousand times faster than most ordinary compressors, we respectfully submit that The Rocket kicks like a mf.

The Rocket features

  • Attack (5 µs–2 ms) – At higher settings some percussive attack will be heard. Set low, your drums will know your wrath. And yes, that says microseconds!
  • Release (1 ms–1 s) – Use a longer setting to make your audio pump musically (let the GR meter be your guide.) Lower settings will radically increase room tone, and the aggression of low frequencies.
  • Impetus – For the application of even- and oddorder harmonic distortion to the compressed signal.
  • Decadence – Raises the internal sample rate to reduce aliasing artefacts.
  • Detector HPF – High-pass filters the level detector to restrain the pumping of bass-heavy material.
  • Parallel Compression – Mixes the dry signal,(untouched by the attentions of compression, compensation or impetus) with the effected signal for the easy application of the so-called ‘New York Compression’ technique.
  • Ratio (4:1. 8:1, 12:1, 20:1, all) – The special and characteristic ‘All’ mode results in a high variable ratio that will work wonders on your drum bus.
  • Threshold – Peak level at which compression will be triggered.
  • Sidechain – switches The Rocket’s detection circuit to inputs 3&4, if your host allows, so one signal may be compressed by another.
  • VU mode – Lower VU meter shows Output level (out) or Gain Reduction (GR).
  • Compensation – Applies a make-up gain to compensate for signal level loss due to compression.
  • Auto – Automatically apply an additional compensating makeup gain based on the current ratio and threshold settings.

Schwa TinMan

TinMan is an auto-peaking resonant filter with multiple pitch detection and individually triggered attack/decay envelopes. In other words, it listens to your audio and makes matching spooky wooo-eeee-oooo effects.

TinMan uses a new polyphonic pitch detection algorithm to isolate and rank the strongest pitches in the input audio. For each detected pitch, a separate resonant filter, or resonator, is peak-matched to that exact pitch (even if it’s off-key), and an attack envelope is triggered. If a pitch slides, the resonator’s resonant peak will continue to track it. If a pitch ends, the resonator will release until fully quiet.

TinMan usage suggestions

  • Spookiness – If you’re doing a sci-fi soundtrack try feeding something, anything, into TinMan and turn the wet mix up full. My God ! It’s made of people!
  • Movement – Apply liberally to boring synths, bland string washes and tedious reverbs to add some interest and activity.
  • Guitars – From giving arpeggios some flourish to fully-wet synth effects, TinMan loves guitars.
  • Backing Vocals – Everyone knows that bass players can’t sing. But sometimes you just have to use what you’ve got, and Tin Man can even turn it into something that sounds like music.
  • Percussion – Set the time controls fast, the threshold high, and turn off oink. Apply to drums and bass for a whole host of percussive effects and special effects..
  • Enhancement – With ‘Oink’ disengaged, a low threshold and the freqency bar set really high, TinMan can add some sparkly top.
