Subtersonic releases free Remo Doumbek sample pack

Subtersonic Remo Doumbek

Subtersonic has released a free sample pack featuring the sounds of a Remo doumbek percussion instrument.

I am not an expert with this instrument by any means, but I do have experience performing Balkan, Turkish, Persian and Indian music with this drum.

The particular instrument that I sampled was manufactured by Remo. It is more of a utilitarian design, with a solid wood body and a synthetic head. It is more durable than a traditional design, but has a less defined tone.

Doumbek sample pack features

  • Sampled Remo DK-0408-08.
  • 8″ Diameter, synthetic pre-tuned head, wood body.
  • Recorded as dry, 16 bit, mono WAV files, 140 samples total, edited with Audacity.
  • Each sample was recorded with 2 mics: a Shure SM-57 near the head, and a Nady SP-1 near the bell (the opening at the bottom of the drum). Recorded into a Tascam US-1800 interface.

The sample pack is a free download.

Subtersonic releases free Brother Typewriter sample pack

Subtersonic has released a free sample pack featuring the sounds of a 1960’s era Brother typewriter.

I have released another free sample pack — a vintage typewriter! It’s a retro, blue, steel affair that smells like 50 years worth of cigarette smoke. I’d like to imagine that a frustrated news jockey sat before it while giving himself a black lung.

I sampled numerous mechanical sounds this typewriter produces during operation. The sample pack can be used for foley, sound fx, musical composition, and anything else that may come to mind. They were recorded dry as mono 16 bit 96khz .wav files using Audacity, a Shure SM-57 and a Behringer mixer.

The sample pack is a free download at Subtersonic.

Subtersonic releases Black Swamp Tambourine free sample pack

Subtersonic Black Swamp Tambourine

Subtersonic Music has released a free Black Swamp Tambourine sample library.

This is for all the people who have graciously provided many great, free samples over the years. I have made my own sample pack featuring a Black Swamp tambourine.

Remember seeing that band where the singer was haphazardly bashing on their hip a plastic circle with thin steel jingles? This is my response to that and my vision of what a tambourine should really sound like. You may be asking, “Tambourine? That’s lame, why bother?” Well, I hope to show with these samples the nuance and charm of this instrument that is underestimated. Use it for orchestral scoring, ethnic/ world beats, or to spice up your rhythm tracks with a new sound.

Black Swamp Tambourine features

  • Model TD2, 10” diameter, ash body, calf skin head, hand hammered Phosphor bronze zills.
  • Articulations at several velocity levels: Dry, shake roll, shell pound, standard hit, thumb roll, staccato thumb roll, zill spin, zill click, head slap, doum and tek.
  • The samples are in .wav format. I have included a mapping for the sampler ShortCircuit as well.

This sample pack is available to download at no cost.
