TC Electronic announces UpCon audio upconverter

Related: , , , , , , Posted in news on Sep 13, 2013 - comment 0 comments

TC Electronic has announced UpCon, a combined and uncompromising upconversion and downmix processor in a single, high-density rack unit.

It continuously monitors the channel format of the incoming audio, and if the signal falls back from true 5.1 to stereo, UpCon seamlessly cross-fades into a convincing 5.1 surround upconversion without adding any interruptions or artifacts.

TC’s UnWrap HD algorithm is the go to upconverter for film and mastering professionals. The sheer sound quality achieved during upconversion is unrivalled and can be heard in countless cinema movies and music tracks. UpCon is based on UnWrap HD and shares its ultra low latency as well as its overkill processing resolution.

TC Electronic UpCon

Loudness Transparency

Contrary to many competing products, the upconverted audio is loudness transparent. Many format converters will output a significantly different signal in terms of perceived loudness compared to the source, but this is not the case with UpCon. Broadcasters often need to stay within certain boundaries according to regulation or recommendation and by letting UpCon handle the conversion from stereo to 5.1, it is possible to stay compliant regardless of the signal’s channel format.

Automatic Input Detection, GPI or Metadata

The hardware is based on the TC Electronic DB6 platform and UpCon offers the same extended control possibilities. Ease of use is key and it can detect the incoming signal channel format automatically. In case the engineer wants more manual control, UpCon also offers extensive GPI control, or it can be set up to react to incoming metadata.

UpCon also offers the same expandability as DB6 Multi. It comes with one 3G SDI stream standard, but it can be expanded with one or two optional UpCon 3G cards for a maximum of 3 simultaneous SDI streams – the ultimate cost-effective, high-density solution.

Redundancy and Reliability

It does not matter how well a transmission unit does its job if it is not completely reliable. Being the last line of defense in a live scenario calls for ultimate redundancy and reliability. Therefore, UpCon comes with dual low-noise fans, dual fuses and dual power inlets for feeding the unit from two independent power sources. This way, broadcasters are virtually risk-free of losing signal while on air.

UpCon is by definition inserted at a very critical point of the audio signal path, and it is an ‘always on’ type of unit that needs to deliver non-stop performance year after year. Should the unlikely event happen that DB6 loses power, transmission will go on thanks to the Relay Bypass feature that passes the stream directly from input to output no matter what happens. Further, if one of the power sources should fail, notification can be given using GPIO or SNMP traps.

The UpCon will be available in Q4 2013.

New Audio Technology releases Spatial Sound Card

Spatial Sound Card

New Audio Technology has announced the release of Spatial Sound Card (SSC), a set of virtual speakers for stereo and surround monitoring for the computer with standard headphones.

The Spatial Sound Card is a virtual sound card that is inserted between software, operating system and audio hardware and enables monitoring of stereo and surround up to 7.1 with a standard headphone on the computer. The room visualizations originate from a constantly growing number of high end studios and dub stages like the ARRI Stage One, MSM Munich and others. The technology used in the SSC was used on major Blu-Ray releases (e.g. The Expendables I and II).

To optimize the virtualization the SSC provides parameters to customize the frequency curve of the used headphones. Presets for well-known headphone models are included.

The Spatial Sound Card works with all applications that support multichannel audio output. These include media players like VLC and FLAC-Player as well as video and audio workstations. The SSC is recommended for media professionals from the audio, video or games area as well as for agencies and companies with workstations that need high quality audio monitoring.

The Spatial Sound Card is available to purchase for the introductory price of 98 EUR until August 15th, 2013 (regular 169 EUR). For now the Spatial Sound Card runs on MacOS 10.6.x and above, a version for Windows will come within Q3, 2013.

TC Electronic intros BLITS 5.1 surround instrument for TouchMonitor

TC Electronic BLITS instrument for TouchMonitor

TC Electronic has introduced an optional 5.1 surround instrument for its TouchMonitor, incorporating a BLITS instrument for generating and analyzing BLITS test signals.

BLITS (Black & Lane’s Ident Tones for Surround) is a tool that allows for testing channel allocation, level and phase of 5.1 surround signals. Developed by Martin Black and Keith Lane from Sky TV in London in 2004, this sequence is widely used in international broadcasting.

This special instrument was created to not only generate a BLITS test signal, but to also use the BLITS sequence for a user-friendly and comprehensive analysis and display of level, channel allocation, phase, delay and polarity of incoming digital audio signals in 5.1 mode. Adjustable limits complement the analyzer. The sequence can be acquired from any digital input of the TouchMonitor.

Apart from the analyzer, the BLITS instrument features a signal generator part that is capable of generating not only the 5.1 sequence, but also a stereo ident sequence either in EBU 3304 format or as the widely known GLITS tone. An identification header like a station ident can be placed optionally in front of the test sequence. The signal will be output through the AES 3 or AES3id output feeds.

The BLITS license option for TouchMonitor requires users to install the current firmware version 3.12 first, which can be downloaded for free at: tcelectronic.com/touchmonitor/support
