Ichiro Toda Synth1

Ichiro Toda has released version 1.0.9 of Synth1, a free synthesizer instrument plug-in for Windows.

The English version history isn’t always too clear but it looks like some important fixes and improvements have been made.

Changes in Synth1 to v1.0.9

  • A phase control function was added.
    • The “phase” knob in the Oscillatos section immobilizes phase relations in the trigger of oscillator 1 and oscillator 2 and adjusts it. The phase is not fixed if I finish turning a knob to the left (like conventionally).
    • The “phase” knob in the Voice section immobilizes phase relations in the trigger of oscillators done unison and adjusts it. This knob should not be effective unless I immobilize phase in an oscillator section.
    • I think that I am easy to make the base sounds with a feeling of weight if I adjust the parameter mentioned above and the number of the unison voices, the unison detune.
  • The number of the polyphonic was expanded to 32.
    • The number of the polyphonic became the parameter every patch.
  • The number of the unison voice was expanded to 8.
    • Regardless of the voicing mode, you got possible to set the number of the unison voices with less than eight freely.
  • The assignment function to LFO of modulation wheel was improved.
    • You can assign major MIDI control change and the channel after touch to arbitrary synthesizer parameter.
    • I coped with a sense to the minus direction.
  • I changed effect of the unison mode knob exponentially.
    • It is easy to have come to do control of the small detune width.
  • Small improvement / a change of GUI
    • It was easy to look and changed the fonts such as patch select windows.
    • The color of the LCD was changed to be able to brighten a little.
    • I made drawing of the LED simple and improved easiness in seeing.
    • The panel size of the default became 150%.
    • Voice status (disabled / key on / key off / ready) was displayed.
    • I revised some words of the dialogue.
    • The Lissajous indication function was abolished.
    • The size of the panel was expanded to 250%.
  • BugFix
    • The problem that a screen flickers for an instant when I carry out a change to preset in Reaper.
    • The problem that all parameters were not displayed in a dialogue of the MIDI control assignment.

Ichiro Toda Synth1

Ichiro Toda has released version 1.08 of Synth1, a free virtual synthesizer instrument plug-in for Windows.

Synth1 is a software synthesizer for computer music use. It is VSTi compatible. The current version is freeware. Functionally it is modelled on the Clavia Nord Lead 2 Red Synth.

Changes in Synth1 v1.08

  • DXi version was discontinued due to difficulty of development environment maintenance.
  • Synth1 installer was discontinued. Instead a tool (initsetteings.exe) for setting Windows registry configuration is included.
  • Number of the banks was expanded to 100. The setting initialization tool sets to bank00 – 09, but does not set bank10 – 99. Folders have to be prepared manually for use with bank10 – 99 (setting in optional dialog).
  • Fixed: MIDI tab of the optional dialogue was replaced without permission.
  • Fixed: Program change error.

Synth1 is available to download as a freeware VST instrument plug-in for Windows PC.

Some interesting things I found recently:

Mike Cook Arduinocaster

# Arduinocaster shreds in MIDI

Mike Cook takes the keytar to the next level.

Arduinocaster is a an Arduino based MIDI instrument modelled on a guitar sometimes called a keytar. It uses switches and LEDs to control six "strings" which are held down in guitar like chords. Triggering the strings is through an opto reflective switch for a continuous repeating strum and four touch sensitive switches for a one off sequence. There are three banks of four picking / strumming / arpeggio styles and a three octave capo. Voice change information can also be sent.

Clubhouse Strummer

# Dinosaurs and Robots: The Clubhouse Strummer

Mark Frauenfelder writes:

My goal was to make an electric string instrument that uses drone tuning. I don't know anything about music theory, but drone tuning is a way to tune an instrument that makes it sound good no matter what you do with your fret fingers. Sitars, some dulcimers, and bagpipes use drone tuning. The clubhouse strummer uses GDG tuning (the Gs are one octave apart). I copied the fret layout from a strumstick, but I could have used this handy mountain dulcimer fret calculator to figure out the fret spacing.

# Synth1 random preset generator
Christophe Roussy created a utility to generate random presets for Synth 1.

Synth1 is my favorite free software synthesizer to this date. There are a lot of preset banks available on the web. I had a look at the preset format and thought it would be easy to generate random presets if I could figure out how the values are stored. I decided to write a small Java application that can generate random presets.

8bitcollective drum machine compilation

# little-scale: Drum Machine Compilation

Kezziebeat writes:

"Due to a song I created just a couple of days ago, I became inspired to start this compo. I want to make a compilation of songs using only kick drums and noise. Yes, only drums. No leads, no melodies, no arps (even slutty ones). I want to see what people can create when they only have a beat to work with.

KVR Music Contest July 2007 – 5 Years

Markleford Friedman

June of 2007 marked the the 5 year anniversary for Markleford’s continuous contributions to the KVR Music Contest. So for this month the idea was to create a musical piece that pays tribute to Markleford.

Markleford has done many memorable tracks in the past five years, but a personal favorite of mine is actually the one marking Markleford’s 5 year anniversary, Five Year Waltz to Suicide.

My tribute started out with this song as an inspiration, originally doing the theme melody with a piano soundfont. I later replaced the piano by a nice Synth1 patch from one of Ouroboros’ Synth1 banks, and recorded a Squier guitar (japanese silver series) for the bass sounds. (I lowered the samples 1 octave after recording).

Unfortunately my project file got corrupted beyond recovery after a computer crash just when I was almost finished with it, so I had to redo the whole thing. It came out a bit different but still has the intended vibe.

Synth1 patches by Ouroboros

Synth1 v1.07

Ouroboros has released 128 patches for Synth1.

Synth1 is one of those synths that has quite a following, and for a good reason. This 2 Osc VSTi with FM and ring modulation still is one of the best sounding freebies out there in my opinion.

Ouroboros does a wonderful job showcasing the versatility of Synth1, with patches categorized in several sections: Bass, Keys, Arp, Pads, Synth and more.

Here’s a little loop I made with only patches from Ouroboros’ bank (5 instances of Synth1 + Kjaerhus Classic Master Limiter).
