Toontrack launches Metal Month with Metal Machine EZX and MIDI

Toontrack Metal Machine EZX

Toontrack has announced the release of the Metal Machine EZX and Metal Machine MIDI, the first two products in the Toontrack Metal Month.

Testament, Megadeth, Arch Enemy, Exodus, Killswitch Engage and Devildriver all call the same man to lay the final hand on their albums: Britain’s Andy Sneap. This highly in-demand producer/engineer has worked on numerous Grammy® Award-nominated albums, is known worldwide for having produced some of the heaviest releases this last decade and has had an instrumental role in shaping the sound of metal music as we know it in the new millennium. Now Toontrack is proud to present the first ever drum sample library to bear his unmistakable seal; Metal Machine EZX®.

Recorded by powerhouse drummer John Tempesta (White Zombie, Testament, Helmet) in Los Angeles’ Henson Recording Studios, formerly known as the A&M Studios, the Metal Machine EZX® lacks none of the metal traits you’d expect: the thunderous bass-drums, the ferocious in-your-face snares and the toms that will cut through your mixes with a crystal clear tone to die for.

Metal Machine EZX features

  • Three kits (2 x Tama Starclassic Bubinga, Ludwig Stainless Steel) as well as a large selection of snare drums and cymbals.
  • Produced and engineered by one of the most successful and in-demand metal producers of the decade: Andy Sneap.
  • Recorded at Henson Recording Studios in Los Angeles, USA.
  • Mixed at Andy Sneap’s own Backstage Studios, Derbyshire, UK.
  • Included MIDI played by John Tempesta.

Also available is Metal Machine MIDI.

Derived from the Metal Machine EZX, this massive MIDI pack takes a headfirst plunge into the archives of drummer John Tempesta’s impressive recording career. Played with killing vigor, it goes to show that John skillfully masters the trashier styles from his roots (Testament, Exodus) through to the more straight forward portion of his catalogue (White Zombie, Helmet), leading up to his more recent and more rock based endeavors (The Cult).

This all makes for a very diverse and highly useful collection of MIDI grooves and fills.

Metal Machine EZX is available to purchase for 69 EUR / $89 USD. The MIDI pack is 25 EUR / $29 USD.

DNR Collaborative releases Organic Compounds

DNR Collaborative has announced the release of Organic Compounds, an acoustic drum sample library.

DNR Collaborative Organic Compounds

Organic Compounds is a multi-format acoustic drum package with real sonic character – high-quality sample recording, but we left a lot of unobtrusive drum and player noises, scrapes and scratches to make it a very unique product with an authentic feel.

We have paid close attention to each samples’ start and end points, making sure each hit starts and ends on zero-crossing to avoid all pops and clicks, and provide a wide array of playing styles not usually covered by traditional drum sample libraries. The original, non-normalized samples are included in this package, and yes, there is a cowbell.

Organic Compounds features

  • 609 Individual acoustic drum samples.
  • 732 Additional processed samples.
  • Recorded through a combination of AKG C414 B-XLS II and Rode NT-55 microphones.
  • Additional bonus content and extras.
  • 25 SFV format mappings, 25 Soundfont format mappings, 25 Alchemy kits + 8 remix pads each, 25 Poise kits + 100 Poise cells.

Organic Compounds is available to purchase for $39 USD. Previous DNR customers pay $29 USD. A developer’s bundle is also offered and can be purchased from the same product page, priced $79 USD.

Review: Dusted William Sounds – Dirty Dose

Dusted William Sounds Dirty Dose

Earlier this week, Dusted William Sounds released Dirty Dose, a collection of samples from various lo-fi 8bit sources.

The Dirty Dose is a sample set made up of over 500 one shot hits from an Atari 2600, a Commodore 64, and a vintage analog Tama Techstar electronic drum set, all recorded onto 2 inch master tape at ekadek studios. Then finely cut up and sampled, ready for you to drop in your tracks and start living again.

The samples are available in .wav format and kits are available in Guru, Battery 3 and Live Drum Racks formats.

Also included is a collection of 100 MIDI files, which are categorized for the various kits.

The Dirty Dose is currently available for the introductory price of $21.99 USD until June 1st, 2009 (regular price will be $29 USD). This includes all the formats and MIDI files.

A demo pack of samples can be requested here, and the product page has some mp3 demos and a nice video demo as well. Make sure to check those.

So what do I think?

I have a soft spot for the bleepy sounds of old game systems, so it’s no surprise I’m digging this Dirty Dose pack, a lot. Even though many of the sounds aren’t necassarily ones you would consider for drum kits, Dusted William Sounds manages to create some convincing kits with these samples.

There’s a nice variety of sounds and the recordings sound lovely. The combination of percussion samples and game type sounds works well for that lo-fi 8bit experience. In short, quality vintage samples for a decent price.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a sudden urge to go play River Raid!
