CD Sound Master has announced the release of its APEX Tape Collection suite of audio software plug-ins for Windows and Mac.
These audio plug-ins allow the user to transform their digital audio workstation into a classic vintage studio with the lineage of the “APEX” tape machine. Included are classic 2” multi-track reel to reels, vintage tube classics, and everything in between.
These Audio Plug-Ins are created with ultra-realistic, 3D Rendered Graphical User Interfaces, or GUI’s, that allow the user to enjoy the look and feel of the original consoles they are using.
“Our vintage tape machines look, sound, and operate like the real analog reel to reels they represent” says Michael Angel, CDSoundMaster, “… because they are created by recording through the actual original machines.”
CDS has worked with a process called “V.V.K.T.”, or Vectorial Volterra Kernels Technology for several years now, and when used with an excellence in procedure, signal integrity, and editing, it provides the user with a nearly identical result to using the original devices.
The APEX Tape Collection for Windows and Mac is available to purchase for $149 USD. A free, fully functional APEX 440B Program from the collection is available to download from the product page.

Native Instruments has announced the release of DRUM LAB, a virtual drum instrument combining advanced drum layering techniques with an intuitive workflow designed for fast results.
DRUM LAB’s combination of acoustic and electronic drum samples is the secret of professionals worldwide – a powerful production technique for creating punchy, present drum tracks. An included groove library provides over 900 patterns for fast groove production with uncompromising sound quality.
DRUM LAB combines the organic, expressive sound of acoustic drums with the weight and punch of electronic samples. This ‘hybrid’ layering technique is the secret weapon of countless industry professionals to give drums presence and clarity in sonically dense mixes. DRUM LAB’s acoustic layer comprises 38 carefully chosen individual drums. Each was recorded in three different rooms with high-end vintage and modern equipment on analog tape. The drums are pre-processed for instant, professional sound and feature all the warmth and subtly acoustic drums bring to top-quality recordings. What sets DRUM LAB apart from other software-based drum instruments is its electronic component: 380 drum hits were sampled from a range of classic and modern drum machines, then expertly matched, phase aligned, faded, and pitched to perfectly blend with the acoustic samples. This crucial step saves producers hours of time, allowing them to focus on their music.
DRUM LAB’s clear interface provides all necessary sound shaping controls directly on the front panel. Producers can choose individual acoustic and electronic layers, blend them to taste via a convenient slider, and quickly adjust fine details with some of Native Instruments’ most sought-after studio effects. A streamlined set of controls for TRANSIENT MASTER, SOLID EQ, G COMP, an optimized drum compressor, and a rich convolution reverb are all located on DRUM LAB’s main panel, allowing quick and easy sonic adjustments. Users can dial in a variety of sounds from detailed and rich to saturated and gritty without spending unnecessary time switching through multiple page menus or negotiating complex effect parameters. This creates an intuitive way to create completely individual drum sounds.
Alongside its extensive sound shaping possibilities, DRUM LAB also delivers authentic performances. A new set of patterns were recorded by a professional drummer, then converted to MIDI files and arranged by genre in DRUM LAB’s groove library. Users can quickly drag-and-drop these patterns into their sessions, accelerating production time without sacrificing human feel. A unique visual display lets producers see where grooves line up in their tracks for added visual reference when creating beats.
Drum Lab for Kontakt and Kontakt Player is available to purchase for $99 USD / 99 EUR.

Tronsonic has launched Kork M500 Micro Preset, a virtual synthesizer instrument for Native Instruments Kontakt.
I tried to get it as close (both visually and audibly) as I could to the original late 70s preset synth (as used by OMD on many records), and also added a few extra features like polyphony and a tape compression and damage effect.
In order to maintain the purity of the waveforms, I chose not to sample to tape (hence the ‘tape fx’ section), but used valves and a chain of nearly 100 year old interstage transformers to capture the audio.
All of the presets are selectable via the interface (as with the real synth), as well as the effects/edit section under the red button.
As you can see, the tape input gain and warmth settings are also controllable via dedicated attack and decay envelopes, enabling a very accurate emulation of ‘hitting’ the tape, and its compression effects. The random gain, warmth and tone are also synced to the tape speed frequency knob, which controls the wow and flutter.
The Kork M500 Micro Preset library is available at the introductory price of £11.99 GBP until June 29th, 2013 (20% off regular).
Goldbaby has introduced Dirt and Layers, a sample library featuring a collection of drum layering samples and dirt sounds for adding texture to your productions.
The dirt sounds can add subtle or not so subtle texture to your individual instruments or whole mixes. For example add some vinyl noise to give the impression that your instrument was sampled off vinyl. Add some tape noise to make your recordings sound like they were done on tape before noise reduction was invented. Use the damaged cassette noise to fake your cassette sampling skills.
The drum layering samples are a fantastic tool kit for augmenting and beefing up drum sounds. Give your drums more depth and texture by experimenting with different layers. Boost the bottom end of kicks with tuned subs or add a transient layer to help it cut through a mix. Crispen snares with various top layers or add body and substance using the sauce and body layers.
This pack is a treasure trove for experimenting and sound designing. With foley style SFX like footstep on gravel, plastic bag scrunching, glass beads dropping on drum heads, rattley door hits, movie style impacts…
Dirt and Layers features
140 dirt sounds (24bit wav), including vinyl and tape noise, digital hash, guitar amp and pedal hum and more…
800 drum layering sounds (24bit wav), including kick subs and sauce, snare tops and sauce, sucks, transients and more…
50 Rex loops, including vinyl centre and locked grooves, wind up motors and dirt patterns.
AfroDJMac has launched VHS Rack and Double P Keys, two new titles in the series of free Ableton Live packs.
This Ableton audio effect rack will give you control over the pitch inconsistencies, chorusing, saturation, and compression that are characteristic of VCR tapes. You can dial in the effect to be subtle, or go all out and make your music sound like it’s practically broken. It can be used on a track by track basis or on the master channel.
Double P Keys is a multi-layered synthesizer rack.
This instrument rack contains five chains of synthesizers stacked on top of each other. 3 of the sounds are designed to add ambience and texture to the sound, while 2 of them produce the musical, harmonic material that allow you to play notes and write melodies. You can mix in the level of “Double P Noise” and each synth. The instrument also has control over the filters of each of the two musical synths.
The first musical synth can be morphed from a pluck type sound to a more rounded pad sound. The second synth makes use of the filter envelop to give movement and character to the sound. All 5 layers of this sound are created from the same sample, just different sections of it. I won’t say exactly what it is, but I’m sure if you give it a listen, it will be a familiar sound.
Both libraries are available to download from AfroDJMac at no charge.
