Review: Diva Ex Machina soundset by The Unfinished

Matt Bowdler is one of my favorite sound designers. As The Unfinished, Matt has established himself in the genre of film scoring with many top quality sounds for synths like Zebra, Omnisphere, Massive, Virus TI, and more.

I’m always excited to see a new title, and especially when it’s for one of my favorite plug-ins, like u-he’s Diva virtual analog synthesizer.

The Unfinished Diva Ex Machina

The Ex Machina soundset features a full bank of 128 sounds for Diva. The focus is on analogue type electronic sounds, suitable for film scoring and electronica.

Ex Machina is something of a special synth soundset as it includes all the patches I designed for the composer Nathan Furst to use in his score for Need For Speed. I have to thank Nathan and DreamWorks for very kindly giving me permission to share the sounds I designed for Nathan. Also in this soundset are a number of other sounds inspired by the work I was doing for Nathan.

The collection features a plethora of warm, punchy basses; ethereal, drifting pads; gentle, old skool sequences; deep, dynamic basslines; classic, spacey leads; and sinister, evocative soundscapes. All programmed with a little musical, kinetic energy in the modwheel, as you would expect.

Well, I can be fairly short here. Absolutely. Stunning. Sounds.

There is such a high level of quality in these sounds, and they are so full of character, I deeply enjoy playing each and every one of them.
That said, the leads and pads are definitely my favorites. Some of these mesmerizing sounds just keep me noodling. So inspirational.
Also, I should mention the soundscapes are amazing. Hold a note and sit back. I know we’ll be hearing some of these sounds on the screen.

Anyway, I said I was going to be short, so just get this pack, it’s simply brilliant.

The Unfinished releases Elysium & Elysium Dark for Zebra

The Unfinished has announced the release of its Elysium and Elysium Dark soundsets for the Zebra and Zebra HZ synthesizer instruments by u-he.

The Unfinished Zebra Elysium & Zebra Elysium Dark Edition

Zebra Elysium represents the soft, dark underbelly of cinematic underscore and ambient electronica. 128 patches full of of blissful leads, kinetic basslines, hypnotic sequences, brooding basses and sumptuous pads.

Inspired by modern film scores that ripple with delicate, infectious analogue synths, Elysium packs a subtle punch. Think of the soundtracks of Cliff Martinez, James Newton Howard, Tom Tykwer and Henry Jackman, add in a little Vangelis and Tangerine Dream, and a sprinkle of BT and M83… that is Elysium.

The emphasis is on lush, lo-fi atmospheres; vintage, widescreen storytelling with a contemporary nuance. Equally at home evoking a dense, fog-set forest; rain-soaked Giger-esque futuristic metropolis; or glittering, steampunk citadel.

Zebra Elysium comes in two versions, the original Zebra2 soundset and a special expanded Dark Edition for Zebra HZ/Dark Zebra. The Dark Edition includes the original Zebra2 patches, but all has a bonus 128 sounds. These bonus sounds take the 128 original Elysium patches and push them in a darker, grittier, more analogue direction.

The Unfinished launches Omnisphere Lost & Found

Omnisphere Lost & Found

The Unfinished has announced the release of Omnisphere Lost & Found, a sound library for the Spectrasonics Omnisphere virtual instrument, in collaboration with Pendle Poucher of Sound Dust.

There are various themes for this collection, but all of them are seeded in a world of broken beauty. Lost & Found is aimed at the strange and wonderful atmospherics of neo-classical; the raw and dirty sonics of dark electronica; and the celestial and heart-thumping cinematics of modern scores. One minute it is a lo-fi, grainy and grungey slap around the face, the next it is a chaotic, soaring, widescreen embrace.

Whilst designing these patches Radio Lost & Found was playing the likes of Olafur Arnalds, Ben Frost, Rhian Sheehan, Nils Frahm, Trent Reznor/Atticus Ross, Steven Price, John Murphy, plus many others.

In this soundset you will find fragile pads, damaged pianos, dusty music boxes, grubby basses, electro-acoustic rhythms and dystopian soundscapes from the ether.
