SoundToys releases Radiator effect plugin

SoundToys has introduced Radiator, a dual drive tube input channel and EQ, based on the classic Altec 1567A tube mixer from the 1960s.

SoundToys Radiator Altec tube mixer amp plugin.

The original Altec 1567A hardware was a rack-mounted five-input tube mixer with removable transformers, a simple two-knob EQ, an unmistakable green faceplate, and a whopping 97 dB of gain.

The sound, by today’s standards, is colored and gritty, with a heaping helping of good old fashion hardware noise. In its day, it was used on many early Motown hits, and found its way into the PA racks of countless churches and school auditoriums across the USA.

Radiator brings the classic Altec tube sound to desktop recording rigs, capturing the distinctive warmth and punch of the original hardware. Featuring the modeled bass and treble tone controls from the original unit, a mix control for easy parallel processing, and the saturation and harmonic effects of the original hardware’s input and output amplifiers. All of these different circuit elements interact, allowing a wide range of tones to be created with just a few simple knobs. Plus we let you decide if the original noise is on or off.

Radiator for Windows and Mac (VST/AU/RTAS/AudioSuite) is available to purchase for $129 USD. Users of Little Radiator can upgrade to Radiator for only $49 USD until January 3rd, 2013 (regular upgrade is $89 USD).

Studio Devil releases Virtual Tube Preamp plugin

Studio Devil Virtual Tube Preamp

Studio Devil has announced the release of Virtual Tube Preamp, a tube preamp modeling effect plug-in for Windows and Mac.

This product marks a new advancement in non-linear circuit modeling. We have created new algorithms and techniques to improve the accuracy and authenticity of vacuum tube and analog circuit modeling that we like to call “second-generation” Studio Devil technology. By focusing on modeling a single-stage tube preamp, we have been able to place a larger amount of CPU resources on this one task. The result is the most advanced and highly accurate digital reproduction of tube preamp analog circuitry.

Virtual Tube Preamp features

  • Discrete Vacuum Tube Preamplifier Channel using the best vacuum tube modeling technology available to faithfully emulate the dynamic and expressive nature of real vacuum tube preamplifiers using Studio Devil’s proprietary vacuum tube circuit modeling technologies.
  • Input Drive Control adjusts the strength of the signal feeding the input grid of the virtual tube preamplifier.
  • Output Level Control to adjust the output signal strength and to compensate for low drive settings.
  • Bass Contour Control to sweep the value of the cathode bypass capacitor which controls the low frequency and dynamic saturation responses of the preamp.
  • Treble Rolloff Control to tweak the value of intrinsic and parasitic capacitances in the simulated vacuum tube preamp, giving control over the natural warmth and softness associated with real vacuum tube preamps.
  • Bias Switch to select from two preset tube bias levels which vary the interaction of gain, asymmetrical drive, and dynamics of the preamplifier.
  • Invert Switch permits controlling the phase of the preamplifier and the polarity of the class-A asymmetry.
  • CPU Switch adjusts the modeling algorithm to balance the tradeoff between accuracy and CPU load allowing multiple instances to run on even slower workstations.
  • Overload LEDS assist in setting healthy levels by indicating when the input signal is overdriving the tube preamp and when the output level clips.

The Virtual Tube Preamp is available for the introductory price of $99 USD through December 31st, 2012 (regular $129 USD). Existing Studio Devil users can get the plug-in for $79 USD.

Cupwise FX Radio Junk effect plugin

Cupwise FX Radio Junk

Cupwise FX has entered the Radio Junk effect plugin in the KVR Developer Challenge 2012.

Radio Junk is a small but unique suite of effects made from 2 junky old radios, one solid-state (from the 70s) and the other a tube radio (from the 50s). The radios were ‘sampled’ using technology similar but superior to the common convolution impulses out there. It’s called Nebula, and it can capture the sound of what’s being sampled at different dynamic levels, and it can also capture some of the distortion, unlike standard convolution.

These effects use a variant of the Nebula tech called ‘Acqua’, which just means that these are stand-alone effects, and you don’t need Nebula to load them (it’s built in, basically). The radios were sampled in extreme ways to get some nasty lo-fi effects.

Since these were made with the Nebula technology, they will sound different from other plug-ins out there.

Radio Junk is available to download as a freeware VST effect plug-in.

Scuffham Amps S-Gear

Scuffham Amps has updated its S-Gear guitar effect plug-in to version 2.1.

Headlining this release is the new RoomThing reverb unit, and if you haven’t already done so, we suggest you take a listen to Jerry Stevenson’s sound clips on YouTube. RoomThing is a versatile algorithmic reverb processor capable of producing very musical reverbs including realistic rooms and halls, big open and fresh ambient spaces, short decay effects for cabinet enhancement, and even some great sounding spring reverb emulations.

But that’s not all! S-Gear v2.1 also includes great new functionality such as saving and recalling presets for each individual device and support for drag & drop when importing presets. For all the details, download the updated manual here.

For Cubase and Nuendo fans on the MAC, this release sees the full inclusion of VST3 format with the OS X installation. We had a rather long Beta on this, but with thanks to those who helped out, the result is a really good plug-in.

Changes in S-Gear v2.1

  • RoomThing reverb processor.
  • Device Presets.
  • Drag & drop preset import.
  • Ability to import multiple impulse responses in one operation.
  • Maximise button to enlarge Presets, Store As and Impulses screens.

S-Gear for Windows and Mac (VST/AU) is available to purchase for $75 USD. From January 1st 2013, the price of S-Gear will increase to $99 USD. Prices excluding VAT/Sales tax.
