MOTU Digital Performer 7.1 Tuner Plug-In

MOTU has announced it is now shipping Digital Performer 7.1, the audio workstation software with MIDI sequencing for Mac.

Version 7.1 adds dozens of new features and enhancements, including a new Tuner plug-in, improvements to track folders, Auto-Save, and much more.

Changes in Digital Performer v7.1

  • DP 7.1’s new Tuner plug-in can be used to tune a guitar, bass, sax, or any other pitched instrument. Advanced features include adjustable tuning reference (400 to 480 Hz) and test-tone generation. In addition, the animated metering indicates the harmonic complexity of the input signal and therefore the certainty of the pitch.
  • New Auto-Save preferences allow users to save their original document automatically at a chosen time interval, or auto-save to an auxiliary document in the background. The latter option allows the user to choose when they want to save their original document, while always maintaining a separate backup at all times.
  • New Custom ‘59 power amp models — four new power amp models produce guitar tones with extra punch: preamp, vintage, classic, and modern.
  • Guitar tone presets — dozens of guitar tone effects chains are now provided as convenient presets.
  • Track folder overview — users can now inspect the contents of collapsed track folders at a glance, including track color and type of data.
  • Track folder editing — users can select, cut, copy, paste and otherwise edit the contents of collapsed track folders, just like individual tracks.
  • Track folder controls — track folders now have play-enable, solo-exempt, lock, and other track controls, just like individual tracks.
  • Channel strip presets — users can save, recall, and manage plug-in effects chains as single presets, including guitar effects chains and virtual instrument chains that include effects. Many presets are provided for drums, guitar, bass, vocals and more.
  • Automatic addition of inserts — when a user fills the last channel insert in the Mixing Board, or loads a new multi-insert preset, extra insert slots are automatically added as needed.
  • More plug-in presets — many new plug-in presets have been added, especially for DP7’s guitar effects plug-ins.
  • New Trim tool for automation — users can scale, flatten, or offset MIDI or audio automation data within a selected time range in one simple step.
  • Auto-check for updates — users get immediate notification about about new available updates as soon as they launch DP7.
  • Fine-tune control — users can now make fine-tuned adjustments for many controls in DP7 by holding down the command key.
  • More keyboard shortcuts — users will speed their workflow with new shortcuts for controlling the QuickFilter, nudging MIDI notes up/down, zooming, and other features.
  • Core Audio file format support — users can now import Core Audio (.caf) files via simple drag and drop.
  • Pro Tools 8.03 compatibility — Digital Performer is fully qualified for operation with DAE version 8.0 to 8.0.3.

Digital Performer 7.1 is now shipping, priced at $795 USD, and available for immediate download as a free update for registered DP7 users.

Korg Sound on Sound

Korg has introduced the Sound on Sound (SOS), a battery-powered track recorder, which enables musicians to capture and develop musical ideas as they happen, wherever they are.

Unlike other portable recorders (even multi-track), the SOS allows for an infinite number of overdubs or alternate takes to be recorded. Each track, take or overdub is recorded as an individual CD-quality 16-bit / 44.1 kHz WAV file, and saved directly to a microSD or microSDHC card.

Accurate BWF (Broadcast Wave Format) timing information is embedded in each track, meaning all tracks will automatically line up when imported into a computer-based DAW system for further editing, mixdown and final playback.

The SOS can record up to 200 songs in the traditional linear manner, or be set to loop a specific section. Memory consumption is roughly 100 recorded minutes per GB (gigabyte).

Sound on Sound features

  • Pocket-sized, portable, and battery powered, the SOUND on SOUND multitrack recorder provides on-board rhythms, effects, and an infinite number of overdubs for truly creative recordings.
  • With the built-in speaker and an internal high-quality stereo mic, you can capture and review your recordings instantly, without the need for any additional equipment.
  • Advanced recording features include unlimited undo/redo, loop recording, and Sound Stretch – adjust the playback speed without changing the pitch.
  • 100 on-board effects – powered by Korg’s proprietary REMS technology – to enhance your recordings using a wide range of instruments.
  • Record along to 50 preset rhythm patterns, covering a broad variety of styles.
  • Record and save up to 200 songs in WAV format.
  • High-performance guitar, bass, and chromatic tuners are built in.
  • Records up to ten hours on a pair of AA batteries.
  • Wedge-shaped design is easy to use as a hand-held recorder or on a desktop.
  • KORG AUDIO UTILITY software provides format conversion and audio CD creation. Downloadable free from Korg.com.

The Sound on Sound (SOS) recorder will be available April 2010 with an MSRP of $400 USD.

Korg Wi-Tune

Korg has announced the Wi-Tune, a wireless chromatic tuner.

In 1975, Korg introduced the world’s first hand-held electronic tuner. Now with over 20 million tuners sold, Korg remains an innovator in tuner technology, and it is once again at the forefront with the all-new Wi-Tune Chromatic Tuner. It uses Korg’s Wireless Tuning System™ to provide new freedom for the musician, eliminating the need to swap cables or patch in and out of the tuner during performance.

The Wi-Tune consists of two pieces: the transmitter module and the tuner itself. To use the Wi-Tune, the player simply attaches the clip-on transmitter module to their instrument and turns it on. The Wi-Tune picks up the signal and displays the current tuning information in the large, backlit display. Users can place the tuner module anywhere, assuring maximum visibility with no cable limitations. The Wi-Tune can also be used as a traditional tuner using the built-in microphone. In addition to visual tuning, it can generate reference tones for tuning by ear.

Accurate to within ±1 cent, the Wi-Tune offers a wide detection range from A0 (27.50Hz) to C8 (4186.01Hz). It also features a folding stand for easy-to-read visibility.

Wi-Tune features

  • Wireless tuning – no cable required! The transmitter clips to your instrument and sends the signal wirelessly to the tuner!
  • The large backlit LCD offers excellent visibility, even at a distance. The newly designed meter follows even slight changes in the sound, and provides a large note name display.
  • The integrated cover/stand allows the tuner to be placed on a music stand, table, or on the floor to accommodate any situation.
  • Three Wi-Tune packages are available:
    • WR-01: Regular clip – guitar, string instruments, etc.
    • WR-01BW: Smaller clip for Brass & Woodwinds
    • WR-01S: Includes strap for use with Saxophone, clarinet, etc.
  • Internal mic allows tuning using the main unit alone.
  • Sound Out mode produces a reference tone from the internal speaker for tuning by ear.
  • Markings indicate pure major third and minor third intervals for exceptional ensemble harmonies.
  • Designed to provide environmentally-friendly extended battery life.

The Wi-Tune is available now for an MSRP of $150 USD.

BOSS announces TU-3 Chromatic Tuner

Boss TU-3

BOSS has announced the TU-3 Chromatic Tuner, an updated version of the pedalboard standard TU-2.

The TU-3 is the stompbox tuner for the next generation of guitarists and bassists, retaining all the features of its predecessor while adding many new tricks of its own.

Housed in a rugged BOSS stompbox chassis, the TU-3 is built to last. The new high-brightness meter mode improves visibility under bright sunlight, and a newly-designed 21-segment meter light ensures super accurate and visable tuning. The proprietary BOSS Accu-Pitch function visually verifies when the target pitch is attained. The sound output is muted while the tuner is on, allowing players to tune silently on stage.

Tuning modes include Chromatic and Guitar/Bass, which allows players to tune by string number, now with support for seven-string guitars and six-string basses. The TU-3’s LED meter and arrow indicators clearly show when the instrument is in tune, with two different display modes to choose from.

To address the growing popularity of drop tunings in metal and hard rock music styles, Flat Tuning mode allows players to calibrate the TU-3 for tunings up to six half-steps below standard pitch. The tuner’s reference pitch can be adjusted as well, over a range of 436-445Hz.

The TU-3 will be shipping in January with a retail price of $160.50 USD.
