Review: Goldbaby Productions The CustomDMX

Goldbaby CustomDMX

After doing two synth sample libraries — FatsoSynths Vol 1 and Tape101 —, Goldbaby returns with another drum sample library: The CustomDMX.

Besides drum machines recorded on tape machines, sounds sampled on the vintage MPC60 and SP-1200, and drum machine sounds pressed on vinyl & played on various turntables, we now have new type of treatment: The DMX + Prommer.

The Oberheim DMX is a classic drum machine that uses sampled PCM (Pulse Code Modulated) audio for its sound source. To store the individual sounds it uses EPROMs (Eraseable Programmable Read-Only Memory). The chips on these EPROMs can be erased by exposing them to ultraviolet light and you can (re)program them with a PROM burner, also called a Prommer. You can watch a video of Goldbaby creating a custom EPROM here.

Goldbaby writes:

Countless hours were spent creating these 8 bit custom EPROMs. Then installing them in the DMX and recording the result . This was definitely a labour of love! Get hold of some really unique old school drum sounds.

The CustomDMX features

  • 1182 x 24 bit – one shot wav samples.
  • Plus the DMX groove templates!
  • Battery, Guru, Refill and Wav formats.

I had a go with the Battery version which also includes 15 kits to get you going right away.

The samples include drum machine sounds from various sources (DMX, 808, 909, Drumulator, Mbase, MXR, MicroTonic, and more…), sampled and processed in several ways. The DMX standard drums are available as raw samples, re-sampled ones and you get a folder of UBK Fatso goodness. There’s also a folder with various sounds like eastern percussion, SH-101 fx, sampled vinyl hits, etc.

The CustomDXM is available for purchase for $24 USD (includes all formats).

So what do I think?

As you would expect from an 8-bit drum machine, the CustomDMX samples have that same lovely lo-fi sound that the original ones have. The DMX was used by a lot of artists in the early 80′s so you might recognize its sounds from hit songs like Holiday by Madonna, Rockit by Herbie Hancock & Bill Laswell, and Prince’s Purple Rain, to name just a few.

Besides the DMX samples there are plenty of other sounds in this library. Goldbaby even included a bunch of vocoded sounds. Goldbaaaaybaaaaaiyah! This is another top notch sample library of sounds I don’t really need, but does one ever have enough unique drum sounds? I guess not!

What else can I say… Just head on over to the CustomDMX product page and listen to the demo mp3s, these sounds speak for themselves.

Some interesting things I found recently:

Jethroe DJ FX

# Jethroe DJ FX

Jesse Terry writes:

Here’s a little master bus effect rack for Live 8 that I put together. This is the one used in the APC40 video. Thanks to Ableton user joesapo, I used some of his effect racks as components in this one.

Fade to Red uses Live 8’s new modes for the delays, for some nice dubby delay, similar to an Electro-Harmonix Memory Man.

# iDaft for iPhone

iPhone version of the original iDaft by Matias Najle.

If you always wanted to feel like Daft Punk, here’s a tool that will make you lose minutes, hours or days having fun doing your own version of “Harder Better Faster Stronger”.

Charles Altmann wooden turntable

# The Altmann DIY Turntable

Charles Altmann writes:

After the success I had with my homebrew tonearm, I decided to build a turntable that is able to fathom the sonic delicacies that the tonearm is able to produce.

Those who visit my sites regularly already know that I am a sucker for natural tone. Therefore the turntable is made to large parts out of wood. Wooden base, wooden motor base, wooden turntable-platter, wooden tonearm. Some ideas make this turntable easy and cheap to build. Depending on your local price for wood, and your ability to find some surplus parts, total cost can be as low as $50,-

Review: Goldbaby Productions Vinyl Drum Machines

Goldbaby Productions Vinyl Drum Machines

Goldbaby has released a new collection of drum samples: Vinyl Drum Machines.

Nope, Hugo @ Goldbaby hasn’t been crate digging for obscure vinyl for his latest product. Instead he had his own acetate record cut so he could sample drum machine sounds to get that authentic vinyl touch.

Sampling off vinyl has been a staple of many producers since samplers were invented. Vinyl has an unmistakable sound. Using it as a sample source you get material that is dripping with personality and warmth, that digital sources just can’t recreate.

I have always wanted a record with just drum machine samples on it. Finally I did something about it.

You can see a video of the making of the acetate here.

The result is a record with of 14 drum machines: Linn Drum, TR-626, CR-78, MBase 01, DR-110, Linn LM-1, Drumulator, TR-808, Ritmo 12, TR-909, TR-505, µTonic, SP-12, TR-606.

The drum machine sounds were then sampled from the vinyl record, using 3 different turntables:

  • Pro-Ject RPM + Pro-Ject Tube Box II — audiophile equipment for pristine recordings.
  • Technics SL-1700 + Leak Variscope — vintage setup with a late 70′s turntable and a 60′s phono pre-amp.
  • Vestax Handy Trax — portable record player which runs on batteries; lo-fi!

The end result: 1468 x 24 bit samples.

Besides all the drum machine sounds, Hugo also sampled some bonus content: vinyl noise, vinyl clicks, vinyl hitz and center grooves.

Vinyl Drum Machines is available in Wav, Battery 3 and Guru formats (ReFill soon) starting at $29 USD.

So what do I think?

Every time I see a new Goldbaby I wonder how it is going to be different from all the other drum machine sample libraries I’ve seen before (including Goldbaby’s own libraries), and time after time he manages to exceed my expectations.

Vinyl Drum Machines is a fantastic idea, and perfectly executed. The samples are top notch quality as per usual and the selection of drum machines used provides plenty of variety.

And here’s a nice tip from Hugo:

I have been experimenting with velocity switching between the different record player versions of each drum sound. Hit a pad/key lightly and it plays the plastic portable turntable version, hit it harder and it plays the audiophile version and hit it really hard and it plays the vintage record player version.

Makes for some interesting dynamic drum machine sounds…

Check out the sound clips on the product page and get your wallet out… there is a good chance you’re going to want these!
