Rabbit Ears Audio has launched Typewriters, a sound fx sample library featuring a collection of sampled typewriters.
REA014 Typewriters features the sounds of the Smith Corona Classic 12, Smith Corona Sterling, Royal Companion, Olivetti Lettera 22, Remington Standard Model 10, Royal Standard Model 10, and the Woodstock Standard Manual.
On its face, REA_014 is a diverse collection of typewriters spanning over 80 years of mechanical innovation, from the turn of the century to the mid-1970s.
The seven typewriters provide source material to cover most of your secretarial needs. In addition to the library’s obvious usage, there are endless mechanical possibilities.
Recorded at 192kHz, each sound is ideally suited to exploit pitch shifting. Play these machines at half speed and feel the heft of real craftsmanship: the torque and thud of the hammer’s blow, the carriage return’s zipper-like windup.
The sound library is available to purchase for the introductory price of $50 USD (regular $70 USD).

Subtersonic has released a free sample pack featuring the sounds of a 1960’s era Brother typewriter.
I have released another free sample pack — a vintage typewriter! It’s a retro, blue, steel affair that smells like 50 years worth of cigarette smoke. I’d like to imagine that a frustrated news jockey sat before it while giving himself a black lung.
I sampled numerous mechanical sounds this typewriter produces during operation. The sample pack can be used for foley, sound fx, musical composition, and anything else that may come to mind. They were recorded dry as mono 16 bit 96khz .wav files using Audacity, a Shure SM-57 and a Behringer mixer.
The sample pack is a free download at Subtersonic.

Rhythmic Robot has released Typewriter, a sample library for Native Instruments Kontakt.
Typewriter is a sampled version of a 1920s Imperial wide-carriage typewriter. It includes a pool of randomly-selected keystrikes, plus a host of carriage-return, bell, platen wind, spool wind, shift, tab and other mechanical noises. Keystrikes can be “played” with one hand from a MIDI keyboard’s white notes while shift, tab, carriage return and so on can be added at will via the black notes.
Typewriter is ideal for special effects, stutter-type glitches, foley effects or sound design. It is being released in time for Valentine’s Day so users can “write love letters straight from their heart… in style”.
- 21 randomly-selected keystrike samples: no machine-gunning.
- Mechanical noises, platen winds, tabs, shift up and shift down, space bar etc.
- Mapped so as to be “playable” from a MIDI keyboard: type from your synth.
- Requires Kontakt version 4.2.3 or later (including Kontakt 5).
Typewriter for Kontakt is available to purchase for £1.50 GBP.
