Review: Eclipse Sound Zebra Botanica

Eclipse Zebra Botanica

After a series of soundsets for Native Instruments Absynth and Massive, Polish sound designer Artur from Eclipse Sound Design takes on the Zebra synthesizer by u-he with Zebra Botanica.

Ethno-tropical sound set with a gentle breeze of warm equatorial regions.

The soundset includes a total of 54 patches:

  • 32 Abstract Instants.
  • 4 Lead/Bass.
  • 3 Sequence Patterns.
  • 15 Texture Pads.

Most patches have all 4 macro XY pads assigned for maximum expression.
At 54 patches, this soundset is rather small. However, it is surprisingly versatile.

Check out a few of the patches included in this audio clip.

For a demonstration of the sounds in a musical context, Torben Hansen created this lovely track.

So what do I think?

Product: Zebra Botanica by Eclipse
Format: .h2p patches for Zebra 2.5
Price: $8.95 USD
Like: organic sounds, expressive, unique & usable
Don’t like: –
Verdict: 8/10

Zebra Botanica is a really nice set of sounds. I don’t know if it’s the concept, patch titles and the cover art for the soundset, but the whole thing feels very organic to me. Almost like a collection of real instruments, found scattered around a tropical forest.

There is a lot of color in the instruments, they’re vibrant and alive. Interestingly enough, Artur has shared that he likes to start off with the artwork of a soundset, using a wallpaper of it as an inspiration while designing the sounds. I think this approach works really well, resulting in a cohesive collection of original sounds.

The patch count is kind of on the low side, but the soundbank is priced accordingly.

u-he announces roadmap changes for AAX, Satin, Diva & Bazille

u-he Satin

Urs Heckmann has announced a new roadmap for u-he’s upcoming updates and releases.

Yes, yes, yes… our estimates were wrong (but closer than normal!)

We decided to push AAX support onto the top priority spot while Sascha works on some additional features for Satin. Satin was nearly finished when the public buzz brought up some good points that needed to be thought about.

This moves the roadmap as follows:

AAX support on Mac almost finished, goes beta in June, AAX Windows maybe end of June. We hope for a short beta phase and quick releases (all plugins)

Satin beta in June (while Sascha is on vacation), estimated release mid of July (after AAX is set in stone). We can’t release Satin before Sascha’s holidays, and he’s got the second half of June off.

Diva 1.3 may come late June, early July. It’s a good time for Clemens and me to concentrate on Diva while Sascha is gone.

Bazille has a worse standing because it’s an “Urs-project” and I always need to support Sascha and Clemens in their projects, it may come in late July or August even.

3ee Sound Design Aesthetics for Diva

3ee Sound Design has announced the release of Aesthetics, a soundset for the Diva virtual analog synthesizer by u-he.

Aesthetics is a collection of 64 instruments for the great u-he Diva synthesizer. The basic idea of creating diverse, solid and playable, sweet-spot instruments that were tweaked to perfection with no particular genre or style in mind was very effective.

All instruments within this collection were created by 3ee and were optimized with modulation wheel and pressure controls. (exception, no control assignments for the Poly_String Chest2 patch)

The Aesthetics soundset is available to purchase at the price you want to pay ($7 USD mimimum). A free demo pack is available to download from the product page.

u-he releases Uhbik T & Runciter Rack Extensions + Bundle options

Related: , , , , , , , Posted in news on May 16, 2013

u-he has announced the release of Uhbik T and Runciter, two new Rack Extension effects for Propellerhead Reason.

u-he Uhbik T
Tremolo – but if you think that just means ‘volume wobble’ you haven’t tried the mother of all tremolos yet: Uhbik-T!

Our tremolo unit Uhbik-T is a general-purpose ‘rhythmicizer’ featuring linear or exponential gain modulation. But there’s much more: You can morph between user-defined patterns in the 11 x 16 grid, apply rhythmic lowpass filtering, add vibrato or Haas-delay spatial effects… tremolo redefined!

u-he Runciter
Runciter. Filter with parallel lowpass, bandpass and highpass outputs, resonance, controllable input overdrive and brick-wall fuzz.

Filters were always dramatic sound-shaping tools, one reason why they’re still so popular. But users today expect more than a simple resonant lowpass, so here’s RUNCITER! For classic wah-wah, add low- and highpass together then control cutoff from a MIDI pedal. Or max out the resonance and drive the input from -48db to 48dB for a vast range of effects… instant glittering sweeps or absolute filter mayhem!

Both Rack Extensions are available for the introductory price of $19 USD until June 16th, 2013 (regular $39 USD).

u-he has also launched the creative, modulation, and studio effects bundles, as well as the All of Uhbik bundle comprising all 9 effects in a discounted package.
