Tokyo Dawn Records and Variety of Sound have released SlickEQ – Gentleman’s Edition, an equalizer effect plug-in for Windows and Mac.

TDR VOS SlickEQ - Gentleman's Edition

SlickEQ – Gentleman’s Edition takes SlickEQ’s concept to new heights and adds an exotic “Tilt”-filter flanked by flexible low-pass and high-pass filters. Five distinct EQ models provide a rich set of predefined EQ curves and behaviours for the three main semi parametric filter bands.

SlickEQ GE offers a switchable EQ non-linearity as well as six different output stages. These options offer subtle and interesting textures, from the typical “mojo” often associated with high quality analogue audio gear, up to more obvious saturation.

SlickEQ – Gentleman’s Edition features

  • Modern user interface with outstanding usability and ergonomics.
  • Carefully designed 64bit “delta” multi-rate structure.
  • Three semi-parametric filter bands, each with two shape options.
  • Five distinct EQ models: American, British, German, Soviet and Japanese.
  • Low band offers an optional phase-lag able to delay low frequencies relative to higher frequencies.
  • High pass filter with optional “Bump” mode.
  • Low pass filter with two different slopes (6dB/Oct and 12dB/Oct).
  • Parametric Tilt filter with optional “V” mode..
  • Six output stages: Linear, Silky, Mellow, Deep, Excited and Toasted.
  • Advanced saturation algorithms by VoS (“Stateful saturation”).
  • Highly effective loudness compensated auto gain control.
  • Stereo, mono and sum/difference (mid/side) processing options.
  • Frequency magnitude plot.
  • Tool-bar with undo/redo, A/B, advanced preset management and more.

SlickEQ – Gentleman’s Edition for Windows and Mac (VST/AU/AAX) is available for purchase for 30 EUR.

TDR VOS SlickEQ updated to v1.0.1

Tokyo Dawn Records and Variety of Sound have released version 1.0.1 of SlickEQ, a free mixing/mastering equalizer effect plug-in for Windows and Mac.

SlickEQ

Three (and a half) filter-bands arranged in a classic Low/Mid/High semi-parametric layout offer fast and intuitive access to four distinct EQ modes, each representing a set of distinct EQ curves and behaviors. An elaborate auto gain option automatically compensates for changes of perceived loudness during EQ operation. Optionally, SlickEQ allows to exclusively process either the stereo sum or stereo difference (i.e. “stereo width”) without additional sum/difference encoding.

Changes in SlickEQ v1.0.1

  • New AAX Editions (experimental, Win32 AAX is not functional)
  • Performance optimizations (+30% in some cases)
  • Value-displays now accept “,” as decimal separator (in addition to “.”)
  • Fixed rare denormal issues.
  • User presets slots increased to 10.
  • On a Mac, short-cut labels show “Cmd” instead of “Ctrl”.
  • Preset code now uses the Plugin-name as root tag (the old format is still supported)
  • Show parameter units in GUI-less mode.
  • Fix in mac install script bug which prevented the creation of user presets.

The plugin is available as freeware for Windows and Mac (VST/AU/AAX).

Tokyo Dawn Records release SlickEQ plugin

Tokyo Dawn has announced the release of SlickEQ, a mixing/mastering equalizer designed for ease of use, musical flexibility and impeccable sound, developed in collaboration with Variety Of Sound.

TDR / VOS SlickEQ

Three (and a half) filter-bands arranged in a classic Low/Mid/High semi parametric layout offer fast and intuitive access to four distinct EQ modes, each representing a set of distinct EQ curves and behaviors. An elaborate auto gain option automatically compensates for changes of perceived loudness during EQ operation. Optionally, SlickEQ allows to exclusively process either the stereo sum or stereo difference (i.e. “stereo width”) without additional sum/difference encoding.

In order to warm up the material with additional harmonic content, SlickEQ offers a switchable EQ non-linearity and an output stage with 3 different saturation models. These options are meant to offer subtle and interesting textures, rather than obvious distortion. The effect is made to add the typical “mojo” often associated with classy audio gear.
An advanced 64bit multirate processing scheme practically eliminates typical problems of digital EQ implementations such as frequency-warping, quantization distortion and aliasing.

SlickEQ features

  • Intuitive, yet flexible semi parametric EQ layout.
  • Full featured, modern user interface with outstanding usability and ergonomics.
  • Carefully designed 64bit “delta” multi-rate structure.
  • Three EQ bands with additional 18dB/Oct high-pass filter.
  • Four distinct EQ models: “American”, “British”, “German” and “Soviet” with optional non-linearity.
  • Four output stages: “Linear”, “Silky”, “Mellow” and “Deep”.
  • Advanced saturation algorithms by VoS (“stateful saturation”).
  • Highly effective and musically pleasing loudness compensated auto gain control.
  • Oversampled signal path including stateful saturation algorithms.
  • Stereo and sum/difference processing options.
  • Tool-bar with undo/redo, A/B, advanced preset management and more.

SlickEQ is available as a free effect plug-in for Windows and Mac (VST/AU). VST3 and AAX formats will follow later.

Variety Of Sound releases SlickHDR effect plugin

Variety Of Sound SlickHDR

Variety Of Sound has launched SlickHDR, a free “Psychoaccoustic Dynamic Processor” effect plug-in for Windows.

Technically speaking, SlickHDR contains a coupled network of three dynamic processors with two of them running in a “stateful saturation” configuration and one based on look-ahead processing.

Fixed amounts of the unprocessed signal are then injected into the network at several specific points and also mixed back into the networks output.

Being networked, all processors are highly interacting with each other and this is utilized to cope with a wide variety of sound (sic!) to balance the perceived audio dynamic range.

SlickHDR features

  • Balances the perceived global vs. local micro dynamics of any incoming audio.
  • Creates a rich in contrast, detailed and clearly perceived image which translates way better across different listening environments.
  • Provides a convenient workflow by simply adjusting three dynamic processors to show a roughly same load.
  • Offers further and detailed control about overall tone and release time behavior.

SlickHDR is available to download as a freeware VST effect plug-in for Windows.

Variety Of Sound teases SlickHDR effect plug-in

Related: , , , , , Posted in news on Jan 20, 2014 - comment 1 comment

Variety Of Sound has posted a teaser image of the SlickHDR effect plug-in for Windows.

Variety Of Sound SlickHDR

Since quite a while, I’ve dreamed about a brand new series of plug-ins which will combine the strength of both worlds: analog modeling on the one side but pure digital techniques on the other – incorporating techniques such as look-ahead, FIR filtering or even stuff that comes from the digital image processing domain, such as HDR (High Dynamic Range) processing.

First encounter: SlickHDR

High Dynamic Range (HDR) processing is something pretty much new in the audio domain. While there are lots of theories and implementations available about HDR imaging, this is quite new and sparingly adopted in the audio domain. SlickHDR is going to be a very first approach in applying high dynamic range processing to audio within a VST compatible plug-in.

Variety Of Sound releases Thrillseeker VBL – Vintage Broadcast Limiter

Variety Of Sound has launched Thrillseeker VBL, a free Vintage Broadcast Limiter effect plug-in for Windows.

Variety Of Sound Thrillseeker VBL
Thrillseeker VBL is a “modded” version, which not only has the classic gain reduction controls but also grants detailed access to the amount and appearance of harmonic tube amplifier distortion occurring in the analog tube circuit.

Bringing mojo back – Thrillseeker VBL is an emulation of a “vintage broadcast limiter” following the classic Variable-Mu design principles from the early 1950′s. They were used to prevent audio overshoots by managing sudden signals changes.

From today’s perspective, and compared to brickwall limiters, they are rather slow and should be seen as more of a gain structure leveler, but they still are shining when it comes to perform gain riding in a very musical fashion – they have warmth and mojo written all over.

ThrillseekerVBL is available to download as a freeware VST effect plug-in for Windows.
