Some interesting things I found recently:

# Electric Independence: Vince Clarke and the Temple of Synth

The new episode of Electric Independence documents a visit to Vince Clarke's incredible home studio that features more analog gear than, well, probably anyone we've ever encountered. The founding member of Depeche Mode, Yazoo, and Erasure is enjoying the country life in Maine but still cranks out the jams, or as he likes to put it "making something from nothing."

MusicRadar Reason on iPad?

# Propellerhead CEO discusses iPad music software

From MusicRadar:

Propellerhead Software's Reason is an app that many (not least MusicRadar) are touting as a perfect fit for Apple's iPad, and it seems that a port to the new tablet may not be beyond the realms of possibility.

Our sister magazine Computer Music was recently in touch with Propellerhead Software's CEO Ernst Nathorst-Böös, and when asked about the potential of the iPad in a music-making context, he said: "From a technical standpoint, the iPad has very similar capabilities to the iPhone.

"We have yet to see if the difference in form factor between the two is a big enough differentiator to turn the iPad into something different. I suspect it is."

While Nathorst-Böös was unwilling to be drawn on whether Propellerhead will develop iPad apps, he did say: "the iPad is at least as powerful a computer as the ones we started making software for back in the 90s. And that's pretty exciting!"

Drumaxx & Ableton @ ModulateThis!

# Image Line Drumaxx Tutorial – Routing Pad Output to Separate Audio Tracks in Ableton Live

Mark Mosher posted a tutorial on how to route pad output of Image-Line's Drumaxx percussion synth to separate audio tracks in Ableton Live.

Image Line has just released a new Percussion Modeling Instrument called Drumaxx made by Maxx Claster. Drumaxx includes 130 drumkits, 900 drum patches, 200 drum patterns. If you use Sawer, Sakura, Morphine, Poizone, or Toxic Biohazard instruments, then you are familiar with Maxx’s work.

Image Line is offering Drumaxx as a “name your price” download for limited until March 31st,2010 with a minimum price of $13 USD with $1 going to support Haiti earthquake victims. With a deal like this I thought it was a “no brainer” so I picked it up.

One of the coolest features is that each of the 16 physically modeled drums can be routed to individual tracks within your host so you can add additional effects. Below I’ll show you how to set this up on Ableton Live.

Mini-review: SoundsDivine The Joy Of Sound

Related: , , , , , // Posted in reviews on Feb 16, 2010

SoundsDivine has recently released The Joy Of Sound, its first collection of sounds for ACE, the virtual modular synthesizer plug-in by U-He.

This bank contains 130 new sounds for U-He’s ACE, featuring punchy basses, overdriven analogue style sequences, modular mayhem, oriental instruments and deep rich pads. Most patches use modwheel and velocity assignments to make the sounds as expressive as possible.

Here’s a video of me running through the presets.

So what do I think?

Product: The Joy Of Sound by SoundsDivine
Format: ACE native format (.h2p)
Price: $25 USD

I think I know why Simon of SoudsDivine named this soundset The Joy Of Sound. With its wonderful set of features and exceptional sound quality ACE is a true joy to work with. I can only imagine that it must be a delight for sound designers to create patches with this modular synth.

These 130 patches for ACE include many well designed creative and unique sounds. Great use of modwheel as well (documented in the info panel of each patch).

The range of sounds is quite varied; I’d say there should be something for everyone. I wasn’t too fond of the bass section as some of those sounds were too experimental for my taste. The pads on the other hand are just my cup of tea, very inspiring.

Check out the sound demos on the Joy Of Sound product page and see what you think.

Some interesting things I found recently:

# MStretchSynth Demo – Kevin Schlei (2010)

'MStretchSynth' uses multi-point (multi-touch) data streams to create a synthesis instrument driven by the relationships between points. Instead of mapping touch positions (X and Y coordinates) directly to synthesis parameters, relationships such as angle, distance, and velocity compared to other points are used.

'MStretchSynth' uses angle, distance and total velocity between points to map to synthesis parameters pitch, amplitude and delay depth.

Harmonic Ratio Arpeggiator

# Harmonic Ratio Arpeggiator

John Fisher writes:

This is my first system for making melodies and chords in just intonation: a harmonic arpeggiator. There are two different tables containing numbers for the numerator and denominator, and these tables can be moved through independently, at different speeds. Midi input triggers notes, but only the time and octave of the input notes is taken, and the rest is controlled by the ratio sequencers. I have implemented this system in both my Nord g2 modular and in Reaktor, so I can make them work together.

# Gotta Groove Records – "Groove With Us"

Nick Cavalier’s short documentary about a new vinyl pressing plant in Cleveland Ohio, called "Gotta Groove Records".

They specialize in 7" and 12" Vinyl creation/manufacturing using PVC molding. Check them out here: gottagrooverecords.com

# Five EQ mistakes and how to avoid them

Kim Lajoie writes:

EQ is one of the most important tools available to audio engineers. Used correctly, instruments sound great and seem to fit together effortlessly. Used incorrectly, the mix resembles a battlefield with every instrument trying to destroy the others while fighting to be heard. One of the difficulties of EQ is that it is relative – the right settings depend entirely on the raw sound and the mix; there are no specific settings that will work every time. The key to using EQ effectively is to learn how to listen to the raw sound and identify what tonal changes will emphasise its best qualities and make it work in the mix.
