I like freeware. Even prefer when plausible. Can be pro quality, these days.

I DID GIVE UP on Waves. I use NOTHING from them anymore.

A lot of people seem to get pretty good results with Terry West's freebie Steady Pro: http://www.terrywest.110mb.com/steady.html

Putting aside this particular plugin, vocal rider, but rather just addressing the concept of auto-leveling on input channels: it has always failed for me. The "auto" part has always been "auto-incompetent" doing things that I would never dream of doing if I adjusted the vocal manually. Sure it's quicker, but vastly inferior in quality.

I see people recording tracks with plugins like this and even comp, limiter and EQ all inserted into the channel. It could be fine if you had someone who sang perfect vocals every time, but when I end up editing such tracks in melodyne, for example, the channel insert processing kills much of dynamic flexibility and the pitch shifting turns into an autotune type nightmare of glitches. I know many people don't care or don't notice and they'll take any shortcut just to get the job done quicker, but I notice and it really bugs me.

Getting back to the Waves plugins: is this company relevant any more? Most everyone seems to have moved on to other brands who put out more innovative and original plugins. The last version I used was version 4, and they seemed rather old and dated even then. When I saw version 5, they looked like they had the exact same functionality as version 4, just with a new look... just trying to force another upgrade I guess.
