Audio Damage has recently released a single-oscillator monosynth plugin built in the small-grey-box tradition of early 1980s hardware.
AD-202 keeps its front panel to one VCO with saw, pulse, sub, and noise running into a 24dB ladder filter, one envelope, and one LFO, with exactly one path from a knob to a sound.
Underneath that vintage-styled ergonomics sits a thoroughly modern instrument, including mono or eight-voice poly, per-voice analog drift, a tempo-syncable LFO with delayed onset, MPE, MTS-ESP microtuning, and a post-VCA color section with pre-filter saturation, filter drive, distortion, and a tilt EQ.
While inspired by Roland’s MC-202 MicroComposer, Audio Damage built the voice architecture, the envelope behavior, and the trigger modes of AD-202 from the ground up rather than circuit-modeling any one unit.
AD-202 features
- Single VCO with 16′, 8′, 4′, and 2′ footages from an alias-free sawtooth and a two-saw pulse, plus a sub oscillator running one or two octaves down.
- Source mixer with independent saw, pulse, sub, and noise levels feeding a pre-filter saturation stage.
- Resonant 24dB ladder filter with its own Drive control, feedback-path soft clipping, and gain compensation.
- Delayed-onset LFO with triangle, square, stepped random, and sample-and-hold shapes, ramping in vibrato depth over up to four seconds after each new gate.
- Age, a per-voice fixed random drift across pitch, pulse width, cutoff, LFO rate, and mixer levels, rolled fresh for every plugin instance.
- Full MPE with per-note pitch bend and pressure, four assignable aftertouch destinations, and MTS-ESP microtuning with glide preserved across a retune.
Three trigger modes are available: Gate reuses the voice on the lowest note, Gate plus Trig retriggers the envelope on the last note played, and LFO retriggers the envelope once per LFO cycle for a rolling, self-playing pattern.
AD-202 for Windows, macOS and Linux (VST3, AU, AAX and CLAP) is available for the intro price of $39 USD until September 15th, 2026 (regular 49 USD). It is also available for iPhone and iPad (AUv3) from the App Store for $4.99 USD.
