Christophe Kalkau has announced the release of a MIDI effect plugin that sits between an ordinary MIDI keyboard and an MPE instrument, putting every held note on its own channel and moving its pitch bend, pressure, timbre, and pan independently while the key is held.
MPE Drift generates this per-note motion in real time as ordinary MPE data, so the receiving instrument gets a genuine per-note performance from a keyboard with no per-note controls of its own, and the result can be recorded in the DAW like any other performance. Each held note runs its own five lanes, each with a shape, depth, and rate, so a chord’s notes stay related as one gesture while moving independently rather than each running an unrelated modulation.
MPE Drift features
- 5 lanes per note, targeting pitch bend, channel pressure, CC74 (timbre), pan, or any of the 127 CCs, across 8 shapes (drift, sine, triangle, saw up/down, square, sample and hold, static).
- 4 drift modes set per lane: Chaos (independent motion), Parallel (moving as one body), Orbit (motion traveling voice to voice), and Split (opposing directions).
- Chord machine with 22 chord types, octave layers, strum, 13 scale locks, note spread, velocity humanize, and timing offset.
- Arpeggiator with 6 directions, up to 4 octaves, latch, ratchet, gate, and shuffle, free-running or synced to the host grid.
- Up to 15 voices across 16 MIDI channels, bend range up to 48 semitones, and 48 host-automatable parameters.
- 24 factory presets, with user presets saved as files.
MPE Drift is available to purchase for €24.99 EUR (incl. VAT) in VST3 and CLAP plugin formats for Windows. A free 7-day trial is available to try the plugin.
