discoDSP has announced an update to its virtual analog synthesizer instrument inspired by the Nord Lead 2. Version 6.4 of Discovery comes with various improvements.
Discovery 6.4 replaces the oscillator engine with a modern DSP implementation for reduced aliasing and a richer analog character — including pulse width smoothing that eliminates zipper noise during modulation and an expanded FM depth range. The filter display now shows real Hz values for more intuitive sound design. MIDI channel 5 acts as a broadcast channel to control all layers at once, and the gate sequencer gets one-click rhythm pattern presets and smoother click-and-drag step editing.
Changes in Discovery v6.4
- Oscillator Engine: Replaced oscillator engine with new, modern DSP implementation for reduced aliasing and improved analog character. Fixed PWM distortion at extreme pulse width values. Added pulse width smoothing to eliminate zipper noise during modulation. Improved FM depth range for more expressive frequency modulation.
- Output: Added output limiter to prevent clipping on hot signals in standalone app.
- Filter Display: Filter frequency LCD now shows actual Hz values (e.g. 440 Hz, 2.5 kHz) instead of a percentage.
- MIDI: MIDI channel 5 now acts as a broadcast channel, sending control data to all active layers simultaneously. Added MIDI clock tempo detection in standalone mode for accurate BPM sync without a DAW.
- Gate Sequencer: Added effect presets menu (three-dot button) with one-click gate and delay rhythm patterns. Gate cells now support click-and-drag to toggle multiple steps in one gesture. Fast mouse movements across gate cells no longer skip steps.
- GUI: LED button click areas enlarged to 18×18 px for easier interaction. Pointer cursor shown on hover over all LED buttons and the gate sequencer. Native macOS popup menus and preset rename dialog using system Cocoa controls.
- macOS: App data now stored in ~/Library/Application Support/discoDSP/Discovery/ for correct macOS sandboxing compliance.
Available for Windows, macOS and Linux (VST/VST3, AU and standalone), Discovery is priced 99 USD/EUR at the discoDSP store and from distributors such as AudioDeluxe, PluginFox and ADSR Sounds. The iOS/AUv3 version is $19.99 USD at the App Store.
