ModulTone has recently launched a suite of audio plugins for Windows and macOS that give mid and the side their own controls.
Treat your middle and your sides differently. Saturation, compression, transient shaping, clipping and multiband compression, each with its own controls and independent character control for mid and side.

MS Widener applies its widening only above the chosen crossover point, keeping everything below it centered and phase-safe while the top end opens up, with a built-in goniometer plotting the stereo field and channel correlation live as the knob moves.
A more aggressive Huge mode is available for material that can take it, doubling the width above 100% up to 300%, though it can introduce phase problems and is flagged on the product page as an obviously processed, further-from-source setting.
